Cajun Radio 1470
Kirk Allen <kirk74601@...>
Saludos Fellow DX'ers,
This morning's DX session brought in just one new ULR logging, but it was a fun one for me. I hrd this one on the E-100 slider plus the SAT. 1470, KLCL, Lake Charles, LA, 1300, 12/27, Apparently this sta must have switched to their daytime power of 5 kw because it appeared out of nowhere. I had been on the freq for about 10 minutes trying to ID an XE when this one came blasting in. Initially I hrd what sounded like a heavy-duty Cajun song in progress. M ancr w/ ID very shortly thereafter. "Broadcasting...on 1470, we're Cajun Radio, KLCL, Lake Charles, and 1290, Jennings." (ULR Station #410) For you Cajun mx fans, here's the link to their online streaming audio: http://www.cajunradio.net/common/gap_streamer.php 73's, Kirk Allen Ponca City, OK

I'll have to dig in my logbook for more precise details, but several members of IRCA and NRC identified this one for me when I heard them about a year ago. Your description certainly seems to fit. Well...it looks like it's gonna happen soon ....hopefully sometime today!!! After a productive Sunrise and a New Cuban logged last night....I am currently sitting at 599 ULR Stations Logged!! About that station on 1490- it's unlikely to be Lancaster because, as you said, Lancaster is not in the Laurel Highlands. new ULR loggings tonight in Ohio
Tim Davisson
Too bad I don't understand Spanish better...as there's stuff all
over the lower half of the AM dial (i.e.: something under WSB 750, under CKLW 800)...and a SS on 600kHz.....haven't a clue. One of them (I believe the 750 kept saying Chile...and Andes (as in Andes Mountains). Who the heck can figure that one out with just those two pieces of "information"). Any way...new ones today, all EST...on the SRF-59, 100% barefoot and unmodified: 1430 WENE/Endicott, NY...3:27pm with "Binhampton's sports station". 1360 WPPA/Pottsville, PA, 3:33pm. 1280 WHTK/Rochester, NY, 3:38pm, talk. 580 CFRA/Ottawa, ONT, dominate at 8:22pm, "news-talk 5-80". 690 CINF/Montreal, QUE, 8:35pm, FF news. 730 CKAC/Montreal, QUE, 8:38pm, FF talk. (the last 2 finally getting around to counting them). Am up to 270 ULR's heard. Some weeks I'll listen 4 or 5 hours total, some weeks not at all. Suppose if I did my totals would be closer to 400 or so. Being from the middle part of the country helps. I've noticed a lot of regional stuff is coming in about 2 or 3 in the afternoon...a bit earlier than usual...with local sunset at about 5:15pm. Stable "daytime, local conditions" last less and less total time during the winter..per usual. 73's, happy DXing, and Happy New Year, Tim, KD8GZ Norton, Ohio (near Akron)

Re: ICF-S5W, ICF-EX5
Hello Heatwave,
The ICF-EX5 is basically a Japanese-market upgrade
for the ICF-S5(W) series, adding double conversion and a synch detector (but not
an improved 455 kHz IF filter, or improved loopstick design).
The loopstick in the ICF-EX5 is indeed more
isolated away from the main circuit board, however, which may account for your
discovery of slightly better nulling ability than that of the ICF-S5W. All
of the modified portables here have gained a significant increase in
nulling ability, when a loopstick is mounted outside and above the radio's
cabinet. For example, the new Slider E100's can null out locals and
receive noontime daytime DX stations 10 kHz away, at distances of 150-200 miles
during the enhanced December conditions.
The tilted loopstick in the ICF-S5(W) series can
improve nulling ability in some cases, but Sony's placement of the
loopstick near the middle of the cabinet would tend to minimize this
advantage. My own impression is that Sony chose this loopstick position as
a matter of convenience, to avoid having the 4 main loopstick coil wires (and
the other 4 from the external antenna connector jack) interfere with the dial
string system (having the red and green LED's moving across the top of the
analog dial). When I designed the Slider loopstick for the ICF-S5W
(which ultimately was a DUD), I needed to thread the 4 loopstick Litz wires
through an empty screw hole in the center of the back cabinet, in order to
avoid snarling the dial string system. Sony probably placed the stock
loopstick in the middle of the cabinet, for the same reason.

ULTRALIGHT DX.......2 NEW ONES in past 2 days!!
Hi Guys:
I hope everyone had a Good Day today and had Fun ....and Ate too Much..and all the rest of the good stuff!! After 3 days of partying, and eating...my body is just about ready to surrender!! Anyways...I think I survived it all for another year......won't know for sure til the weekend after I've had time to recover. In the midst of all this I did find a LITTLE Time to DX and was able to add 2 NEW ULR Stations to the Log. Both were heard at Sunset and both are also NEW to the OVERALL LOG as well. Rocky Mountain High
Kirk Allen <kirk74601@...>
Merry Christmas Everyone,
Since I wasn't able to get together with my son, daughter-in-law, and grankids for Christmas, I had nothing to do with my time off except tune around on the E-100. I experienced a first. 5 new stations came rolling in this morning, and 4 of those were from Colorado, one of my very favorite states. All times/dates in UTC per usual. All hrd on the E-100 slider. 930, KRKY, Granby, CO, 1411-1420, 12/25, Hrd in null of semi-lcl WKY (OK City). EZ/lite Christmas vcl mx played. Clear ID 1414 and ancd an FM freq as well. G sig. 1360, KHNC, Johnstown, CO, 1433-1500+, 12/25, featured a highly enthralling infomercial guarnteed to cure all ailments, even if they've never been discovered before, ha ha. Just kidding. They were pushing some kind of health product and was hosted by an alleged Chiropractor..they refered to it as the "green herb"...I didn't think that was legal to advertise...ahemm. 1460, KZNT, Colorado Springs, CO, 1503, 12/25, I believe this sta must have switched from night to daytime power right after tune/in. The station suddenly popped on with a huge signal and scared the heck out of me! ID immediately after they became audible...good deal, that gave me more time to tune around some more. 1090, KMXA, Aurora, CO, 1530-1559, 12/25, all SS lang pgm'g with IDs and SS Christmas mx. G sig just like the above CO stations were this morning. 1090, KEXS, Excelsior Springs, MO, 1600, 12/25, Started mixing it up w/ KMXA until this one became more audible. A Catholic radio net of some kind was ancd. Nice ID 1600. One ID by a little girl (circa 5 years old) was hrd, and was quite cute sounding. (Hey Robert: Once you get freed up for some listening, don't forget to come up for air now and then...good luck in hittin' 600...even if ya don't, you're still way ahead of us I do believe!!) That's it from here for now. MERRY CHRISTMAS Kirk Alen Ponca City, OK

Second Slider DT-200VX model
Hello Guys,
The DT-200VX has apparently been discontinued
by Sangean, but a couple of these models will live on as souped-up DXing
monsters.
Like the Eton E100 ultralight, the DT-200VX
receives a phenomenal boost in sensitivity when a 7.5" Amidon ferrite bar-based
sliding coil loopstick is transplanted into the front end
circuitry. The Slider DT-200VX sensitivity is fully equal to
that of the Slider E100's, which can run circles around many
full-sized portables.
Unlike the Slider E100 project, however, it is
not beginner-friendly. The four Litz wire soldering connections on
the RF circuit board include two that are extremely crammed, making it mandatory
to use a soldering iron bus wire attachment, to avoid frying adjacent
components. For this reason, these DT-200VX Slider monsters are
unlikely to proliferate, like the souped-up E100's.
The Slider loopsticks do not always provide a
phenomenal sensitivity boost-- they have proven to be Duds in the SRF-39FP and
ICF-S5W models, inducing a serious dose of necessary humility in the
transplant tinkerer. The DT-400W model should be another DXing monster,
however.
73 and Merry Christmas to All,
Gary DeBock

Re: #500 heard on an ULR
Kirk Allen <kirk74601@...>
Richard,
I just read the great news from you. CONGRATULATIONS AMIGO. I figured you'd get that #500 within a day since you were sitting at 499 stations a couple evenings ago. It's quite encouraging to read about DX'ers like you logging that large a number of stations on ULR's...that gives me hope that one day I might hit that 500 mark. I think I'll try to take my time getting to 500. Knowing myself the way I do, I'm afraid I might get really bored with this if I get to the point of not logging anything new after hours and hours of listening. Like John B. posted, what's next? Good question. Oh well, I have a long ways to go before I need to concern myself with that, ha ha. Richard, thank you for all your help along this ULR journey. I never expected that anyone would get close to 500 stations! A wonderful accomplishment. If you ever slow down enough to send Rob the appropriate submittals, both you and Kirk have earned a slew of new awards. I can't help but speculate "What happens next?" Is there a "ceiling," a number of stations beyond which a person can only add one or two new ones a month??? At that point, if there is a ceiling, whadda ya do??? Kirk and I wimped out very early and have been piling up our station counts in the Unlimited class.... we can shift over to Barefoot and start over doing a much more difficult slog through the numbers.... but what happens then? Are limits of "ten dollar radios" or crystal sets in our futures??? In any case, Richard, a Barefoot 500 has only been accomplished once before, I believe. "What happens next?" is a great problem to have. Merry Christmas to all! John Bryant
I accomplished my goal of hearing 500 stations on a barefoot,

Good job, Richard! 500 is quite the milestone. Personally, I've been

stuck at 449 stations, as I've been in a drought for the past two weeks. Of course, DXing from Oklahoma has it's own unique challenges compared to DXing from the coasts, especially for those foreign catches- I'd love to snag Japan, although I have Croatia and Spain. Onto 600! As for me, I'm shooting for my 500th station by March. But no one is going to catch Rob Ross! John Cereghin Smyrna DE
