Re: Couple new radios on the way!!!

Emily Keene

Congratulations on your new gear! I love the Skywave radios. I have the SSB one and the first one, and enjoy them both. I am in the middle of a move, and since my birthday is coming up, I bought a few new radios since so many of mine are packed up ( not the Cranes - I kept them both out! ) I bought several, but my two favorites of the new ones are a Tecsun PL-330 and a Sangean HDR-14.

Just one question: what were, if any, the contenders against the ccrane?
Anyhoo, sounds like a lot of new fun coming up! :)

Hi all,

As new radio purchases are always exciting and difficult to explain to "non-radio" people, I thought I'd share with the group.

New additions to my UltralightDX team are:
  • C.Crane Skywave - Love it!  Just got it yesterday, so still learning it
  • Sangean DT-800 - On the way, but seems nice
  • A Vonidor cheap AM/FM "old school" radio - Vonidor
  • A PowerBear cheap AM/FM "old school" radio - PowerBear
  • Also purchased a rotatable turntable to use with my Tecsun AN-200 loop antenna

Thanks for sharing my excitement!  :)

You may find a user that publishes his logs here. He's all about barefoot DX, and has been having a lot of success.

Hi all,

I had another question...

Is there still the concept of DX'ing "Barefoot" vs "Modified" ?

I have been out of the Ultralight DX'ing "scene" for awhile, so I wasn't sure?

I thought that "Barefoot" meant any unmodified "stock" radio that fit the Ultralight restrictions with size, etc.
Modified meant, "anything modification goes", while observing the Ultralight restrictions with size, etc.

Thanks,

Johnny

Wise words.
I do mostly SW and AM. Never was much into FM. As long as you keep it UltraLight and enjoy yourself, thats what counts.

Have a great Weekend, all.

Do most here primarily AM DX or FM DX?

Just curious.

I DX with my HDT-20 (almost the opposite of an Ultralight!) on both

Truer words ...

For a given AM/FM receiver, there are, through a typical year, many
more AM broadcast DX targets than there are FM broadcast DX targets.
You may find AM DXing more fun because there are so many stations *OR*
you may find FM DXing more fun because the openings (Tropospheric
Ducting, Sporadic-E) are much more rare.

Or just do both. :-)

As long as it's fun for you ... it's fun for you!

At 0110 UTC there was Studio X from Italy on 1188 khz, and live baseball on 1500 khz. It would point to a station in Saint Paul MN
but it is odd since T/A was almost impractical at the time with 1010 and 1130 only audible at short intermittent moment. But the

Investigation under way.

Glad to hear you have found it useful. I am sure once I fully move to it I will find it solves a lot of my issues.
House moving for the next week or so and then I will be able to make great use of it.

Bonjour Patrice,

"1305 mixed signals, one dominant, almost sure it was Léon; they spent quite some time about road traffic and embarassment."

You can get local ID "Radio 5 todonoticias + [name of the province] at 05:25 UTC (5 minutes slot) and also 05:45 (15 minutes slot). With it you will be sure of the transmitter QTH. After the ID, most of the outlets will inform about the weather or/and the traffic.

Any help you need to puzzle out details (or audio clips) do not hesitate to ask!

¡Buen DX!
