Re: Tecsun PL-310 rechargeable batteries

Thos sound just like the ones I got with the three different PL--310 radios that I have purchased. Yes they are NiMH rechargeable batteries. The best I could tell from the chinese markings is that they are rated for 2400 mAh. I tested the 9 that have gone through my hands. They ranged from about 1600 down to 1100 mAh. There was one that tested way low in each group of three. As they run in series, you will be limited by the one with the lowest capacity. I did not get acceptable run time with the provided batteries. I decided to just get rid of them and put some Eneloops in there that all were testing close to 2000 mAh. I get much better results now. Though it is a nice touch that they supply batteries, what you get doesn't seem to be very high quality. My recommendation would be to get some good name brand low self discharge cells like the Sanyo Eneloops to use in your new radio.

Some of the R Reloj stations are strong and I'm sure you can hear them in Ontario. The double beep may be the didahdit didahdit "RR" every minute. Here are R Reloj frequencies commonly heard in So Florida.

 570

 790

 820

 930

The PL-310 IF is very low, so not likely the problem.

Re: Time Signal???

Paul Robertson <probertson6@...>

Here is an after thought. Does the Tecsun 310 happen to have a time "chip" in it to keep accurate time in the radio?  This would be the same let's say as an "atomic clock" that picks up a 60 Hz signal from a station such as WWV.  I wonder if this may be what I am hearing... anyone else hear the same time tones over a weak AM signal?

It doesn't seem to matter the location. I hear it in Ontario as well as when in Florida so assume this would rule out the Cuban station. If an IF leak why just this time signal and not other IF mixings?

Paul

Cuban "Radio Reloj" outlets would be one guess.  You should see if other radios are getting the same thing or if this is unique to your 310.  If the latter, it could either be something from SW or LW mixing or getting into the IF chain instead.

it is very weak, fast and unintelligible. It definitely is not WWV or CHU.
Can someone explain this strange anomoly?

Saudi on 1521 and Croatia on 1134 are the usual top dogs of TA's here. For ultralighting, the 5 kHz splits such as UK 1215 and R. Farda 1575 are always good candidates.

The recent upgrade to Algeria's 549 signal puts it high on the list too even though only a 1 kHz split. It often wipes out the 550 domestics.

Good on Farda, John! France was pretty weak. Croatia was staggering. I
just sorted out some recording, will post it on my site in the morning.
Got something on 1422, but have to filter the het from a 1420 local.
Want to get up pre-dawn to DX again, so off to bed early tonight. :)

You Latin total is very impressive!

It's beginning to slow down here a bit on the Latins. The Law of Diminshing

is a super DXer, found all of 20 countries while we were standing in a

a decent log; I was shivering too much to write down more than country
names. Being from Colorado, Chris thought it was warm. :) Keep 'em coming,

Thanks Alex! I've heard Radio Reloj Cuba on a car radio from Norwalk, OH on
950 so it is possible. Just listen for the beep on the minute and the "RR"
in morse code. That usually breaks through the co-channel QRM. You can also
try 570, 790, and 870 kHz for the Radio Reloj outlets there.

Kirk <kirk74601@...>

I couldn't hear any TA's here tonight, but I did luck into one new Mexican sta for the ULR log. Hrd on SRF-59 w/ Select-a-Tenna.

1300, XEXW, Nogales, Sonora, 0221-0230 UTC, 2/23/10, mixing it up with XEP and another XE (possibly XESW). Hrd w/ SS yak by several announcers. Hrd three "Doble U" IDs though no call letters were copied. KAKC, Tulsa, not audible tonight at all which is pretty unusual. Lost this sta after 0230 at which time XEP was fighting w/ that other XE I couldn't ID.

73 to all!

The geomag disturbances of the last few days have abated and mid-latitude TAs are very strong into South Florida tonight. Right now I'm listening to R Farda 1575 on the speaker. Earlier, Croatia 1134 was also speaker-level copy, and I picked up France on 1557 for a new country, though not as strong as Croatia. I'll have recordings of Croatia and Farda tomorrow. Right now, fire up those ULRs. I'm using my PL-380 with modified internal loop antenna 330 uH.
