Nice catch, Byron! I've logged 27 states from here in northeastern PA but I can't snag anything in Delaware. WDOV is 131 mi from me. You give me hope! I'll have to try sitting on 1410.

Here in South Florida, 555 is dead quiet, and the ghost of Dr Scott was barely audible a while ago. The Europeans are barely audible as well. Pretty good propagation up the coast at sunset, though. If you're hearing Spanish on 1610, spend some time on them. Other than CHHA, a multicultural in Toronto, and a 250-W daytime Mexican station, everything else is either a TIS or deep into South America. Argentina and Peru, for example. WRTH lists a R Reloj on 1610 but it's inactive. I have the Beacon and CHHA here now (0125Z), but nothing else. Tonight's a good night for DXing Latins, folks. Good luck! 73, Jim, KR1S http://qrp.kearman.com/

Some new Cubans, and a surprise
jim_kr1s <jkearman@...>
Operation Bay of Sigs continues. There are 76 Cuban stations in the log (23% of my ULR total) or, as Glen Hauser would say, I have reached the semi-sesqui-centurian-plus-one level. Not sure the last 24 are possible from here, but braced with 8 oz of espresso I hit the beach, err, band at 1000Z today. That's 5 a.m. local time. This coincided with sunrise over Guantanamo, eastern Cuba, and the plan was to catch some daytime-only Cubans as they came on the air. Last night, map in one hand, WRTH in the other, I plotted a few, east-to-west, by province. Operation BoS does not lack for planning! It paid off, with two new R Rebeldes in Guantanamo province right away on 550 and 580, and a R Progreso in Santa Clara on 680 and a R Sagua (after the city of Sagua La Grande, birthplace of former U.S. senator from Florida Mel Martinez) in Villa Clara on 1540 a while later.
But something else turned up as well. The ubiquitous R Enciclopedia was missing from 530! In its place could only have been a U.S. propaganda station, perhaps airborne. Here's a short recording: http://kearman.com/images/530-022510-0958Z.mp3 I'm counting this as a logged station, but not for any geographic location, as it was probably an airplane. It faded into the noise about 1027Z; when I checked 530 later, R Enciclopedia was booming in. As usual, PL-380 with modified internal loop, not that you need a great antenna to hear Cuba from Florida! The espresso maker is by far the more-useful accessory. 73, Jim, KR1S http://qrp.kearman.com/

Re: Hacking the Si4734: two more PDFs
Roy <roy.dyball@...>
Silly Me Thank you Scott for alerting me. The G8 I used to transcribe the circuit from was the one that got the giant EMP. The K16 I tested must have been damaged making it look like an NPN transistor when I tested it with my analog meter. In fact it is actually a 2SK238-K16 N Channel FET. If you look at the PL-380 on the bottom of the board with components listed in a Square. Here it lists Q1 Q2 as a 2SK238 which is the 3 legged equivalent. The ICF7600GR also uses this device in the front end. I have redrawn the circuit. Cheers Roy.

Wow! Nice bit of work Roy. I see you've drawn it sort of in the style that it's laid-out on the PCB. I'm a little confused by the circuit at Q1 and Q2, however. I think that those may be PNP transistors, which then makes some sense to me. They would be configured as common-collector stages, i.e. emitter-followers, buffering the high-impedance whip antenna.

The marking K16 matches these parts: http://www.rohm.com/products/databook/tr/pdf/dta144gua.pdf which are PNP "digital" transistors. I'm assuming these are surface-mount devices. Thanks for drawing it all out! I love to learn about all the ways radio designers do front-end circuits. -Scott-

Hi Phil I took the time to draw out the G8 front end. The PL-310 and PL380 are similar but with more components in the filter. The same is true for an 02-2010 model PL-300 which has a redesigned front end/audio board compared to the original G8. Feel free use the diagram if you want to. Cheers Roy.

Re: Time Signal???

One maddening aspect of Cuban stations is that the Cuban networks (Progresso, Rebelde, etc. )will often utilize feeds from Radio Reloj on other network frequencies that differ from what Jim posted. I commonly hear RR behind NOLA 870. However, hearing the "didahdit didahdit" makes it easy to id RR with just a bare hint of audio.

Re: Tecsun PL-310 rechargeable batteries
Rik
Rechargable cells might need to go through a few complete discharge and recharge cycles before they get up to full capacity. The SANYO cells are MUCH better, I use them all the time. They are much higher quality, and slow self discharge is MUCH better for radios you don't use too much. NiMH goes dead in a month or so weather you use it or not. - FARMERIK

Congratulations (again) to Chris Knight-- Ultralight TP and TA DXer!
Hello All,
Chris Knight of Fort Lupton, Colorado has amazed Rob Ross and me with
his superb DXing accomplishments this past season, and has just been issued the
following 4 Ultralight Award Certificates:
1) Ultralight TA-DXer, Unlimited Class (for reception of 747-Radio 5,
Flevoland, Netherlands on 12-13-2009)
2) Ultralight TP-DXer, Unlimited Class (for reception of 693-JOAB, Tokyo,
Japan on 1-22-2010)
3) Five Countries Heard, Unlimited Class
4) Three Continents Heard, Unlimited Class
Chris therefore becomes one of a select few DXers who have managed to
receive both TA's and TP's on Ultralight radios from a single location, and
should be congratulated for this. This accomplishment is rare, but seems to
be much more common on the west coast than on the east coast (probably
because of heavier QRM). Usually once or twice a DX season (recently), the "big
gun" TA's like 1134-Croatia and 1575-Farda make a decent appearance on the
west coast, so that they may be weakly heard on barefoot Ultralight radios. The
same does not seem to be true with TP's on the east coast, which seem to
elude almost all ULR DXers. To my knowledge, the only east coast
ULR-DXer able to receive a TP this past season was Brent Taylor (VY2HF)
during a DXpedition to Priest Pond, PEI. His report of receiving 774-JOUB
(Akita, Japan) on an SRF-59 inductively coupled to a Radio Shack loop is pasted
below.
Congratulations again to Chris, and we thank him for his support of
our Ultralight Awards program, honoring John Bryant's legacy.
73 and Good DX,
Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA)
An extensive group of awards certificates is
available from the Ultralight MW DXing Awards Committee. Each recipient receives
a digital file which may be used for electronic display or is suitable for
framing when printed at 8 12" x 11" on good quality paper. Information on the
Awards Program and the simple application procedures are found in the
Downloads>Ultralight Files>General Information area of dxer.ca and our own
file area here at ultralightdx. Applications go directly to Rob Ross
