Hi Chris,

Well, we would have certainly enjoyed having you with us at the Old Country Buffet today! Between Chuck and Guy, there was enough combined DXpedition experience to answer almost any question related to AM-DXing antennas.

The DXpeditioners with unlimited funds may soon switch over to the QDFA antennas, based on their proven superiority over beverage models. Of course, a lot depends on the real estate available for antenna setups, since the size and shape of a beach parcel often determines which type of antenna will give the best performance.

Guy has spent a lot of time working on the QDFA array loops (and controller boxes) this winter, with most of his experimentation detailed in his Perseus SDR blog at  http://fivebelow.squarespace.com/ . His latest Grayland DXpedition with east coast DXer Bill Whitacre is also fully described, including MP3's of 1017-Tonga, 1098-Marshall Islands, 639-Radio Fiji 1, etc.

Currently the SDR and ULR communities seem to be the most vibrant sub-groups in the AM-DXing hobby, and Guy and I frequently enjoy sharing ideas with each other. Having Chuck along for the luncheon was a bonus :-)

I remember seeing loggings from Chuck Hutton in GA from way back when. There
was an article on the QDFA antenna with accompanying sound clips. That is
quite an antenna! I don't remember where the article is or if it's still on
line.

The next PL-380 should be here any day now. Joyce took a week off in
mid-February for Chinese New Year. The radio stands that John Bryant
recommended from Universal Radio are really nice and am going to buy a
couple more of those as well, but in the "big portable" size this time.

As far as land for antennas, I thought about stringing Beverage antennas on
nearby farm land over the winter and possibly negotiate some farm work for
the privilege, but never followed through.

Hello All,

After a local ham fair, three hard-core TP-DXers (all with solid ULR
credentials) gathered at the Old Country Buffet on South Hill (puyallup, WA)
this afternoon, for a general discussion of antennas, DXpeditions,
propagation, and anything else interesting.

On hand was Chuck Hutton, undoubtedly the most successful secret ULR DXer
(having easily received 1566-India on a stock SRF-T615 during a DXpedition
to Newfoundland in 2008), Guy Atkins (first to log a TA on the west coast
using a ULR, receiving 1575-Farda on a stock SRF-39FP in Grayland), and me
(mostly sitting in awe, listening to these two master DXers).

While Chuck gave expert advice on propagation, receivers and antennas, Guy
discussed the new QDFA antenna array (a cooperative project with Dallas
Lankford), and structural systems for large loop designs. We all discussed
the future of the Grayland Motel (currently beset with electrical noise
issues), alternative DXpedition sites on the Washington coast, and
innovative ways to persuade oceanfront residents to rent out small sections
of their property to DXers (for antennas only).

When Chuck mentioned that he was intending to purchase two new Tecsun
PL-380's, I mentioned that my XYL was currently visiting Hong Kong, and
could get them for $35 apiece for him (only)-- as long as he could give us
the MP3 of 1566-India, as heard in Newfoundland on the SRF-T615. We made a
deal on the spot :-)

Re: SONY SRF-29 ?'s

Gary DeBock

Hello Farmerik,

The SRF-29 is one of the Sony analog portable radio family based on the CX1129N IC chip, which provided excellent AM sensitivity and selectivity for its early 1990's design. Other members of this family are the SRF-39 (and its SRF-39FP "prison radio" variant), the SRF-49, and the currently-sold SRF-59.

All of these AM-FM portables have the same basic circuitry, but there are individual differences in component quality. The SRF-29, SRF-39, SRF-39FP and SRF-49 have much longer life expectancy than the SRF-59, which uses a low-cost tuner component subject to electrical breakdown in a couple of years (developing the notorious "sratchy tuner" issue). The SRF-39FP was extremely popular in our ULR group in early 2008, primarily because of an eBay seller who sold them for around $20 plus shipping. Several of these SRF-39FP models are still providing great service.

I did about 60 alignments (and repairs) of these models for others in 2008, so if you run into snags with your SRF-29, feel free to send it here for a checkup. The SRF-39FP was also a popular model for modification in 2008, including the model pictured below (having a transplanted 7.5" loopstick, with coils matched in inductance to the stock coils). This highly sensitive model was the only analog radio I've ever used that could receive a DU (Australia/ NZ) station without external antenna help, receiving 891-5AN in Adelaide, Australia from Grayland, WA in 2008. Selectivity is not its strong point, however.

As mentioned earlier, there was a VG opening to the S here tonight. Many stations north of here were WAY down in strength. I was able to log a fair number of LAm stations that aren't often hrd around here from my limited experience. Two new milestones were achieved here tonight. I finally grabbed station #400 for the TX ULR log and LAm sta #170 all in the same evening! Honestly, I didn't believe that 400 stations would even be possible from this QTH when I began exploring the band from the Houston area last Sept. I'm really happy to report that obviously I based that belief in a comparing way only. In OK I didn't have to contend w/ nearly the amount of horrific images (gives me nightmares), spurs (that jingle, jangle, jingle), slop (like the hogs), splatter (I won't go there), and a multitude of other tech radio terms that I don't understand..sure sounds like inspiration for a C&W song..but I digress:) Details below:

1090, XEAU, Guadalupe, Nuevo Leon, 0017-0101 UTC, 3/6/10, vy difficult to copy but managed to catch a ment of the "La Mas Buena" ID slogan plus about a dozen mentions of Nuevo Leon and Guadalupe. A variety of vcl mx was featured. This one was the weakest out of apx 4 SS stations audible this eve on this channel. Other Mexican stations identifiable during this time were XEWL (Nuevo Laredo, TM w/ "Doble U IDs) and XEMCA (Veracruz, this was the dominant sta overall w/ many clear "La Grande de la Huastecas" IDs).

1050, XEUVC, Nava, Coahuila, 0115 UTC, 3/6/10, This one was battling w/ the stronger XEG (La Ranchera de Monterrey). Vy happy to report this sta faded up to a 100% copiable lvl during their slogan ID, "La Gigante".

1040, Cadena Agramonte/R. Victoria, Cuba, 0140-0330 UTC, 3/6/10, unsure of what was what here. Hrd a few Agramonte IDs but then later hrd R. Victoria IDs as well...I really think Agramonte was what I was hearing during its fade ups. Suffering stiff competion here from XEHES (Chihuahua) and some other interesting UNIDs, WHO hardly audible which is unusual here. Jim, can you help me w/ this one w/ your most recent observations?

1620, R. Rebelde, site unknown, Cuba, 0630 UTC, 3/6/10, VG sig rolling in and clearly //670, etc. ULR Sta #400, LAm #170. I really appreciate the recent tips on this one from Carl DeWhitt and Jim Kearman.

Well I got 5 more for the log last night. Conditions seemed "peppier" than normal.

All times are in UTC, and were logged on a barefoot Sony SRF-59. AMP stands for Air Mile Path, which is defined from transmitting stations of service to my QTH in Springboro, OH.

So WV and VA where well represented this time around.

Also I wanted to mention, with of the closing of the month of February, I've logged a total of 49 stations, which is the most I've ever logged in any time period, Pre or Post ULR AM DX chasing. I almost doubled my log in one, versus the proceeding 11 months! So I hope to at least log 9 stations a weekend. That would make for 468 stations for the year. Lets see, if I can do it.

Not to doubt your CW ability, but there's an MEY on 335 in Mapeleton, Iowa. Don't see any others that start with ME and have a third character starting with a dash.

KTRS 550 St.Louis,Mo 0033-0036 ad,i.d. and possibly them with 'Coast to Coast AM ".poor.SRF-59 barefoot. maybe relog.
CBK 540 Watrous,SK,Canada -tentative. 0014-0028 3.4.10 CBC Radio 1 programming with apparent nx magazine program.poor.lost to a Wisconsin station(WAUK) which was previously logged.
730 bubbling similar to what has been heard on 930.0053-0057 3.4.10 .poor in null of semi-local WLIL,Lenoir City,Tn. SRF-59 barefoot.
notes:Did not hear the FL VOA station on 1180.I checked for a// for Enciclopedia 530 on 1260 and 1410 but nothing heard.A Spanish speaking station was heard underneath the dominant station on 560(which was in English) between 0036-0050 .But sleepiness set in and could hardly keep the eyes open.So i will periodically recheck for this.
