CBK (CBC Radio One) from Watrous, Saskatchewan (serving the entire province; studios in Regina) is on 540 kHz at 50,000 watts. Not sure if this is what you heard, but it's a possibility.

I did a lookup on amlogbook (dot) com as a double check. Last I
knew the possibilities were CBGA1 (Quebec Northern Service) which
is // CBGA-1250, and CBEF Windsor, ON.

I would put my dollar on CBGA1 (CBGA one) as I have heard this
numerous times with all of my UL's and the 1-Transistor radio from

Congratulations to Jim Kearman- Cuba DX Centurian Award

Gary DeBock

Hello All,

Jim Kearman of Florida has become the first ULR-DXer to qualify for the Cuba DX Centurian Award (Unlimited Class), for his success in logging at least 100 Cuban stations on an Ultralight radio. Having so many nearby Cubans is perhaps a mixed blessing, but Rob Ross and I certainly wish to congratulate Jim on his patience in logging them, and wish him success in his future DXing.

An extensive group of awards certificates is available from the Ultralight MW DXing Awards Committee. Each recipient receives a digital file which may be used for electronic display or is suitable for framing when printed at 8 12" x 11" on good quality paper. Information on the Awards Program and the simple application procedures are found in the Downloads>Ultralight Files>General Information area of dxer.ca and our own file area here at ultralightdx. The only French stations in Canada on 1140 are the CBC 40 watt low power
relay stations CBJ-2 Chapais QC and CBF-4 Matagami QC so if you had one of these
it is quite a catch!

New stations heard overnight 3/10/10

bbwrwy

Overnight I logged the following four stations for the first time on my Sony SRF-T615.

3/10/10
0318 UTC 1300 kHz KCSF Colorado Springs CO, Avalanche hockey match from Altitude Sports. Heard through 0403 mixing with WOAD and WNQM.
0321 UTC 1300 kHz WOAD Jackson MS, "Gospel 1300 WOAD".
0356 UTC 1300 kHz WMTN Morristown TN, country music, with ID. Not bad for only 96 Watts signal at 1263.5 km distance. Faded out at 0359.
1327 UTC 1310 kHz KKNS Corrales NM, with Spanish language talk and música mexicana. Heard mixing with KFKA, Greeley CO, until fade-out at 1424.

It brings my total to 759 stations. I'm hoping I finally broke the drought and start hearing some new stations again - at least temporarily.

Sunday and Monday mornings, I heard fair signals from JOUB 774 and JOIB 747 about an hour prior to local sunrise. It was the best TP reception here in several weeks.

Good DX to all.

Richard.

Re: Need Buying Advice For Ebay & Tecsun pl-380, VERY Confused

Gary DeBock

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your interest in the PL-380, and I think you are making a wise decision to purchase that model.

Both "Anon-co" and "hygt369" are reliable eBay sellers, and you should not have any trouble ordering from either of them. "Anon-co" was the only seller of the PL-380 on eBay for about a month, and "hygt369" was the only seller of the Kchibo D96L model for an even longer period last summer. Both sellers have shipped many radios to North America, with no buyer complaints that I'm aware of. There are other PL-380 sellers on eBay who offer slightly lower prices, but you'll need to take your chances on their reliability.

The currently-shipped PL-380's are almost all the "Version 2" model (see http://www.mediafire.com/file/nimoyajwkzj/WEB-WEB-PL-380-Version-1-or.jpg for the photo to distinguish the two models in the shipping box), and have the soft-mute function reduced from the level of the PL-310 and PL-300WT/ G8 models, making it easier to tune 1 kHz farther away from domestic splatter without a huge drop off in the DX signal. It's probably unrealistic to expect Tecsun to improve upon the PL-380 stock loopstick, however, since AM-DXers are not a very significant portion of the Chinese domestic market to which this model is targeted. The PL-310 model has a slightly superior stock loopstick, but also has full-blown soft mute, so it basically depends on your DXing priorities as to which model would be preferable (as explained in the full PL-380 review at http://www.mediafire.com/?w4yuzhj2kyz ). Good luck in your purchase!

The one thing I would like to be sure of is getting the best and most current version available, or should I wait a couple months to see if the manufacturer improves the internal antenna windings.

Re: PL-360? anyone have one yet?

I agree with the others, tuning either the PL-380 or PL-310 receivers can be tricky. I have both and they are well worth the trouble of learning how the tuning works.

Simply pay attention to the > or >> symbols displayed to the right of the frequency. The > is shown when the tuning knob is turned slowly in 1 kHz steps. You'll see >> when tuning in 9 or 10 kHz steps. If you see >> while tuning in 1 kHz increments, immediately remove you finger from the tuning knob and start again.

It requires practice, and with a little patience you will get use to it.

Good luck and DX.

Richard.

The radio will train you over time. :)  I agree, wish they'd left it as in the G8, where you can select 1-, 9- or 10-kHz steps on MW. Once you get a bunch of loggings, you'll start going for target stations, and then the keypad is more useful.

Re: PL-360? anyone have one yet?

Jack Leonard <jleonard@...>

Hi Gary, I guess I would have bought a PL-380 anyway because I've so many good things about it as an MW dxer but the manual tuning is quite a issue for me. I don't seem to able to get it to move any less that two or three stops at a time that is it jumps from 580 to 600 or 610 when I rotate the tuning wheel quickly, I guess I can always use the keypad for tuning but that gets old very quickly. I have not done any MW listening yet, trying to get to know the features, but it seems to be an outstanding FM receiver even on the speaker the tone is surprisingly good and its very good on the headphones and what an array of features in such a small package, remarkable.

The band felt short last night and this morning, with no TAs or even hets heard last night. http://geomag.nrcan.gc.ca/common_apps/ssp-1-eng.php is showing intermittent moderate high-latitude disturbances; we got one day of grace, so I hope everyone took advantage of it!

Operation Bay of Sigs wrapped up with a blitz across the band, looking for R Progreso and R Rebelde stations. While cross-checking Rebelde on 610 early this morning, trying to figure out what I was hearing on 860, the distinctive "RR" of R Reloj poppsed out, for Cuba #103.

A couple of notes on 540 kHz. Chris Black reported hearing HICM and YNOM the other night, with YNOM being 180 Hz off frequency. The tone was audible this morning, beating against WFLF*, but faded at Santo Domingo SR.

I'll have to build that quilt-hoop-loop to replace the internal antenna, or work some voodoo magic on WFLF if I want to log the weaker stations on 540. The internal antenna won't null well enough; even coupled into the Terk, there's enough stray pickup to offset the Terk's ability to null. Being at the bottom of the band, 540 kHz will benefit from the nulling ability of a larger loop. If you aren't trying to null a big signal, inductively coupling into the internal antenna works well enough. If you have a fire-breathing dragon on the frequency, getting the internal antenna out of the circuit is a must.

*WFLF 540 did not change patterns at SS last night and was very strong before sunrise, but I think they eventually switched sometime overnight, as they got even louder at SR. This could be a good candidate for anyone needing Florida. They consistently ID as "WFLA," not WFLF. WFLA 970 is in Tampa. Listening to two idiots talking about UFOs last night, when I was trying to dig out Honduras, I was thinking of all sorts of good mnemonics for "FLF," none of which are family-friendly!
