Congrats on the logggings, Carl. The 560 could have been another
Rebelde, so you may be able to check it by parallel to 600 again.
There's a 560 English-language sports station in Miami, WQAM, 1000-W
night, so it shouldn't be a problem for you.

The Enciclopedia 1260 and 1410 outlets are probably daytime-only. From
Tennessee you may be able to catch them at their sign-on. I logged the
1410 at 1040Z and the 1260 at 0004Z, I think just before it went off the
air. Early to bed and early to rise seems to work best for the little
Cuban stations. Since I started logging and re-logging for the Cuba
Centurian on January 26, of the 96 stations, 27 loggings came over a
two-week period just concluded, when I was listening from 1000-1200Z.

Thanks Gary, and thanks again to you and Rob for contributing your time and effort to the Awards Program. I'm proud to follow in Kirk's footsteps, and hope to do so again soon, with 100 Cubans for his 100 Mexicans. :)

If memory serves, John set the Centurian for 100 stations in a political entity or region outside the one from which the DXer is listening. Thus, Kirk could not apply for 100 Texas stations, as he lives in Texas. There are something like 218 active AM stations in Florida, of which I have logged 129. Many of them are low power and/or daytime-only, but I'm sure many U.S. DXers could log 100 Florida stations. Who will be the first to attain Centurian Florida?

Hello All,

Sorry for the oversight, Kirk. Richard Allen has indeed received the Latin American and Mexican Centurian Awards in the barefoot class, an amazing achievement in DXing skill and patience. As you might imagine, without John's detailed records and serial numbers, we are scrambling to fill in the gaps occasionally.

Congratulations again to Richard (one of our most outstanding barefoot DXers, along with Rob Ross and Allen Willie), and sorry again for the oversight.

ULR log.

Hi, Greg,

Thanks for the follow-up! Glad these loggings are doing someone else
some good. VOA usually owns 1180 down here, only about 120 miles north,
so I quit listening there. When I started trying to hear 100 Cubans I
had fun with Rebelde one night. The loud outlet on 600 started playing a
Cindi Lauper song (of all things). I tuned up the band and wrote down
every frequency where I heard the song and got a bunch of Rebeldes in
the log in a hurry. Unfortunately, 1180 wasn't one of them.

I've had best success logging Cubans early in the morning. Quite a few
must be daytime-only and come on about local sunrise. I have a map of
the provinces to help me track that. WRTH lists several Enciclopedias,
but other than 530 I've only heard them on 1260 and 1410. Again, I use
530 as a reference and look for the same music. Some of the smaller
network stations are harder, and you have to hang in for a TOH ID. That
isn't always possible at sunrise, as something in the States may come on
frequency and cover them up. It's been an interesting project, and has
led to some collateral DX, like Turkey on 1062 while trying to sort out
an R26 on 1160.

Good luck, and be sure to keep the group posted on your loggings.

Congratulations to Jim Kearman-- Latin America Centurian Award

Gary DeBock

Hello All,

Jim Kearman has become only the second DXer (after Kirk Allen of Texas) to qualify for the Latin American Centurian Award (unlimited class), which is issued to those DXers who successfully log 100 or more stations from Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean or South America on Ultralight radios.

The Centurian Award was the last "classic radio" artwork design created by John Bryant before his unfortunate accident, and because of the DXing challenge involved, usually is awarded to those fortunate enough to live fairly close to salt water beaches (Allen Willie and Gary Deacon have also been issued Centurian Awards). Full details on the Centurian Awards are contained in the related Ultralight Radio Award Program description, posted in the Ultralightdx file section.

An extensive group of awards certificates is available from the Ultralight MW DXing Awards Committee. Each recipient receives a digital file which may be used for electronic display or is suitable for framing when printed at 8 12" x 11" on good quality paper. Information on the Awards Program and the simple application procedures are found in the Downloads>Ultralight Files>General Information area of dxer.ca and our own file area here at ultralightdx. Applications go directly to Rob Ross com

According to the new WRTH, which doesn't mean a lot because Cuban stations follow their own paths, one Rebelde is 50 kW and the other is 1 kW. The VOA is 100 kW. VOA is usually loud enough to wipe out anything else on the frequency, including WTIC, which I would love to get for a new state. (I used to live on a hill that was line of sight to their tower.) I'm going to record the TOH and BOH a few times tonight and check them in the morning. The flutter on 1180 is awesome tonight. You guys up there may not be noticing much but things are definitely different on the band down here. I wouldn't mind if the recording shows the two Rebeldes as I haven't logged either of them as ULR, and they would put me closer to Cuba Centurian.
