Hi Richard,

Yes, I also wish you could have been in Oregon to enjoy the wild DXing fun-- chasing AM stations in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific (from the west coast) is about the only way to have much AM-DXing fun in the middle of summer. It's kind of like a head start on the Fall Season!

The 7.5" loopstick PL-360 would have received all the South Pacific DX at the same signal levels as the 7.5" loopstick PL-380, but with more domestic splatter in some cases (because of the fixed 3 kHz DSP selectivity in the PL-360). This wouldn't have happened in all cases, though, like in receiving 891-5AN, which had no domestic splatter anywhere nearby. The 7.5" loopstick PL-360 should be a fun radio for domestic DXing, where the selectivity requirements aren't as great as in 9 kHz-split DXing.

Thanks for that excellent report! You certainly did very well without spending a lot of money on the radio and antenna. It is more fun that way for me as well.

One thing I noticed is your VERY early listening time. I don't think I would get up well before dawn on my vacation.

I am planning to try for TA logging this Fall while vacationing on the coast of Maine. I hope the evening is a good time for listening. -FARMERIK

Your comment is appreciated, and I sure wish you could have been with me in Oregon to help sort out the Kiwi station mysteries :-)

603-Waatea was a solid regular every morning, along with 675-National Radio and 657-Southern Star. 648-Rhema kept me well inspired. The entire DXpedition was a total blast for the humble setup I was using, but I hope your results in the summer will be even better!

Re: July 2010 Oregon Beach Ultralight DXpedition Report

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your kind comments on the DXpedition report, and yes, it's always far more fun to receive lots of transoceanic DX on a radio and loop that only cost about $125! Selectivity advancements in the new DSP receivers (like the PL-380) have made this bargain DXing concept possible, and once a few other DXers try chasing TA's or TP's this way, I think the idea will catch on like wildfire.

Here on the west coast we can't do too much about the early hour sunrise enhancement period to chase DU's, unfortunately. The worst of the sunrise time slots here is around June 21st (the earliest possible), where the DU's start fading in around 0445 local time. John Bryant and I had a joint Grayland DXpedition on July 9th last year (pretty close to the earliest sunrise), when we both got up around 0230 local time to set up everything :-)  East Coast DXers have all the luck, it seems, with convenient sunset TA fade-ins...

Hello All,

For those interested in the rather new sport of Ultralight Radio Dxpeditions, a detailed file describing the results of a recent 7-day trip to Seaside and Lincoln City, Oregon has been prepared.

With unusually good South Pacific propagation continuing for almost a week, the modified Tecsun PL-380 and 3' portable loop (with a total cost of $125) went into overdrive, logging many DU's that had never managed even a trace for John Bryant or me on ULR's at Grayland, WA. Hi Gary,

Thanks for passing that information along.  Today I received my order for 2 N50P capacitors along with 2 pointers for them.  The quality and the service are first class and I highly recommend them to anyone even remotely considering building a loop.  Several years ago I bought an unfinished spiral wound loop at a hamfest.  It is based on the "Harley Loop" featured in an IRCA reprint and I've needed a good variable capacitor and vernier dial to finish it up.  These caps are ideal for this project and I'm glad you let the list know about this website.

Two months of FM DXing with ULR

bbwrwy

Two months ago today I resumed FM DXing after a very long absence. Little did I know most of the station logged would be the result of tropospheric propagation rather than the sporadic-E expected in June and July. Of the 262 stations logged, only 47 were due to E-skip.
So far I've heard stations from CAN/MEX/USA, 3 provinces, 20 states and five estados.

Tropo was fantastic this morning and I logged 14 new stations from three adjacent states (AR/KS/MO). The most distance being KMZU 100.7, Carrollton MO, at (486 km/302 miles). Other DX stations were KCFX 101.1, Harrisonville MO (391 km/243 mi) and KOBK 104.7, Booneville AR (328 km/204 mi). The latter was pulled passed KIXR in nearby Ponca City. I eventually faded out before the tropo.

Thus far all of the stations were logged using barefoot Tecsun ULR's, the majority (88%) with a PL-380.

Good DX all and stay cool.

Re: Homebrew Antenna

Gary DeBock

Hi Rick,

Thanks very much for your comments, and I'm happy to share my results.

One of the N50P variable caps from Crystal Radio Supply was in my portable 3' loop during the recent Oregon Beach DXpedition, where it provided flawless service chasing Australian and New Zealand AM stations. It is small enough to fit inside a 1.5" PVC coupler fitting, for a completely waterproof loop design (if desired). I can't recommend it enough.

Good luck on your homebrew antenna, Rick, and I'll be interested to hear of your progress, and DXing results!

I didn't see any new ULR's, but the Anjan DTS-10 looks like the next generation of the RP-2100 and tunes SSB without an external adapter. The smaller Anjan DTS-09 also tunes SSB. The Kestrel W 618 is listed as DSP and has MP3 capabilities too. Thanks for letting us know. - FARMERIK

If you sign in and open up the group main page, along the top of the screen there should be an "Edit Membership" link. Clicking that, under "Step 2. You probably have the "Individual Email" optoion selected, which I think is the default.
