Re: Poor quality SRF59s - can they be aligned ?

Hi Dave and others
I have two SRF-59, one normal and one "Made in China", probably from the same ebay-seller as you mention. After a little alignment of the chinese I cannot say, which of the two is better. Performance, e.i. sensitivity and selectivity of the China made SRF-59 is not inferior. Was I lucky or is it only a factory alignment problem? Peter

Good Feeling
slowfly55
Hello friends
I have many receivers, my wife says too many. But no one of these DE1103, Redsun 2100, or more sophisticated receivers gives me such a good feeling as a SRF-59 or SRF-39. Of course a DE1103 is a fantastic receiver, much better than our beloved Sonys. But using it I am never shure if it works really at its best. Was I lucky, when I got it, or was that particular one a bad aligned one? Align it myself is far beyond my possibilities. So it is with all my receivers and often I think they should do better, perhaps performance got worse with age..... The Sonys are quite easy to align thanks to the good work of www.dxer.ca. and with a Signal Generator and a DVM it can be done quite precisely. Having done it I know, that my little machine works at its best. For a long time I haven't experienced such a good feeling with a receiver. Peter

The alignment procedure usually gives a big boost in SRF-59Greetings all from the city of Sheffield, Yorkshire, in the north central part of England, UK! So far I have had three examples of the SRF-59. All have the static noise problem when tuning. All suffered the ferrite coil adjustment being badly misaligned. As Gary says a big boost in overall sensitivity and nulling is gained by alignment. Well worth doing. The simplest way I've found to free the coil for alignment is to first extricate the PCB from the case. For the protection of the components, wrap some cardboard around the PCB leaving just the ferrite aerial and the PCB area underneath it exposed. Then play some warm air from a hair drier or carefully from a heat gun onto the exposed area of PCB under the rod. Watch the condition of the wax noting when it has just become molten at the point where it is in contact with the PCB. Try to gently slide the coil side to side and when free simultaneously withdraw the PCB from the warming airflow. Keep moving the coil from side to side whilst the wax solidifies. Once the wax has solidified the coil should remain free. It will look like there is a crack in the wax between the coil and the PCB. Alignment can then commence. Once alignment is complete, rewrap the PCB in the cardboard, reheat the PCB under and around the ferrite aerial to remelt the wax. Tilt the PCB so as to encourage the wax to bridge the coil and the PCB until it appears fused as before. I would encourage anyone to have ago at this. There is little to go wrong as long as care is taken. -- Michael G8PNX wildbear@...

Re: Hello : )
To Paul Logan,
Hello and welcome! You are absolutely right
that I am helping you out with alignments-- your fully-aligned SRF-39FP and
SRF-59 units went out today by USPS Priority Mail (about 7-10 business days to
arrive in Northern Ireland, according to our local post office). I'm very
happy to send my first "export units" to Europe, and you may well be one of the
first DXers in Europe to get a "Prison Radio," which is wildly popular here in
North America, Paul. Its larger tuning dial, slightly superior audio quality and
better sensitivity (than the SRF-59) make it the analog Ultralight of choice for
TP DXers, here on the west coast of North America.
Thanks again for checking in, and great DX to
you!

I think that you were DXing on your new Eton e100 ultralight, not your big bulky-but-wonderful Eton E1 "porta-top receiver" as you stated. This error indicates many things: 1. It is possible to have too many receivers (no! no! it ain't so!) 2. Eton should do a better job of selecting model numbers.... an E1 and an E100 are very different radios, but easily confused model numbers. 3. Since I'm older than you, Rob, I can promise you that the confusion only increases with age. (uhhhh, you did mean the e-100, right :>) For those of you who don't know either of us, I've known/known of Rob for more than a generation and, as he well knows, I'm deeply jealous of his multitude of receivers, past and present. Hello : )
Paul Logan
Hi all,
great to read all the posts here and see the UL sensation going global!. Well, 2/3 of the way into my 30 day challenge in the style of Rob Ross and I've hit 300 loggings. Im in love with the SRF 59! Did my first albeit haphazard alignment tonight went out and bought another SRF59 and was pleased to see it covered exactly the Euro MW band. Much different than the one i bought on ebay which covers from just below 500 khz to 1650!. ( Can i add hams logged on 500khz to my log? i heard GI3PDN the other night at a distance of about 100 miles - he was running - get this - 100 milliwatts!) Anyway i managed to get the radio apart and first widened out receive from 531 to about 1703 khz. then removed a little of the wax holding the smaller coil on the ferrite slid it a few mm to the right and heard a marked jump in signal strength which seems to hold for the bottom of the band.i didnt do much experimenting with this just left it where i first moved it to. I next did the tune up for 1400 khz- but was dissapointed with the results - i thought I had left the top end of MW a bit deaf so I tuned up again but this time on a weak signal at about 1650 khz. i've left it like this. Definitely an improvement but i cant say its outperforming the original, perhaps the new one was just a wee tad deaf. Anyway, conditions are rubbish tonight but I've still heard a few weak ones at the top of the x band with the addition of a 4 foot loop - prolly WLAA on 1680 and KVNS on 1700. These radios are SO much fun.Still would like to see one tweaked by someone who REALLY knows what they are doing - think Gary is helping me out on this score - regards to all - and thanks for the space to share the fun Paul Logan, Lisnaskea, N. Last night I had three US stations on the X band using the 59 with first a 4 foot loop but then and more in keeping with Ul'ing an ugly little 6 inch loop! Those heard were 1660 WCNZ Marco Island FL, 1680 WLAA Winter Garden FL, and I presume WJCC Miami Springs FL ( a mixture of oldies and spanish songs and then some mentions of south Florida) - this one IS back on isnt it?. In fact this last one was JUST audible barefoot playing a Cat Stevens song. In fact the combination of a 59 and a 6 inch loop is astounding - I wish these little radios were around when i was starting out in MW in the early 80's. The UL's are making me feel like I did back then - each dusk is anticipated like Im 14 again! Plenty more logs to come. regards to all Paul Logan, Lisnaskea, N. Hi Robert,
many thanks for the congrats and encouragement - the 300 was a LOT of fun, its going to be a long time before I add another 150 though! Thanks to whoever invited me to join this group.
I probably haven't used either my SRF-59 or SRF-39FP nearly as much as most of you. Everyone I've shown the FP to thinks it's very cool looking especially after I tell them why it's transparent and show them that the ear buds, cord and plug are also transparent. I'm not sure what you could hide in there that could be considered dangerous. I really dislike ear buds and use my very best Sennheiser headphones. Well engineered stations sound awesome. I haven't done a daytime bandscan with either one. I haven't tried using the Select-a-Tenna with them although I'm sure it will help. I don't open up radios because disaster is certain to follow. When my life gets a little less complicated I'll have Gary work his magic on both. 73
