It is unlikely this problem involves the Si4734 AGC. There is no threshold used in the AGC processing of the IF signal. The time constants are very fast and the only artifacts of AGC I've heard are

Hello All,
It's great that Nigel noticed some exciting Asian signals this morning, which certainly was a better result than the west coast seemed toexperience. Thanks also to Nick for his comment

Ah, that chuffing! I call it pumping, but whatever you call it, my understanding is that signals that fade in and out below a certain SNR threshold (10 dB?) cause the AGC to pulse on and off. I

My recollection was it was indeed an AGC problem, but I'm certaily not an expert on the circuitry. IIRC there's a threshold level of the AGC that causes problems with weaker signals. Hopefully someone

Hi Michael/all:
I think the chuffing refers to the chuffing sound of the "hash" created by the backlight of the display? On mine, it "chuffs" for about 5 seconds every time the backlight comes on

Re: Slightly off-topic
Interesting, interesting, Theo!
I thought the D96L was considered one of the best. I dont have one, however.
"Chuffing" - does that mean "fast or too fast AGC response"?
This seems to be a problem

Shortly after I bought a Kchibo D96L last year, I was surprised to grab Cuba's R. Progresso/890 here in the Metro Vancouver area.
The rx's chuffing finally got to me, and I offered up as an auction

What I really like about this hobby is how unpredictable (at least for me) it is. I get the sunrise and sunset concept but each frequency seems to offer something different. Case in

Great job on hearing JOUB-774 and JOIB-747 on your PL-310 (and PalomarEngineers loop) in Colorado this early morning. I was listening at the sametime, and conditions were far from ideal

it's booming in here tonight. First time hearing this one for me too.
