The schematic looks like it runs at the radio’s IF frequency, so most likely you’ll need a direct connection. If the radio has dual conversion, I suggest to couple it to the 2’nd IF stage.

I have one of those devices... around here somewhere. It works pretty well on strong signals, but IIRC it was a bit fiddly. If you can locate one, it is worth trying it out. I have to think about

The G3 was a disaster and had a very high defect rate. Not at all the same as an E5/G5 unfortunately.
