Paul,
You should try for 558-Radio Fiji One around your local sunset after 7BU stops transmitting on 558. The native-language Fiji station was recently supplied with a new 10 kW transmitter, which has

Were your widely spaced windings made with Litz? I think wide spacing lowers self Cap. and so does using Litz.
It was awhile ago I looked at Online photos showing the winding on PL-450 and PL600

Thanks for the heads up on this. On 558kHz you should be able to hear 6WA from Wagin at night.
I'll try to make some recordings of 7BU & 7AD before they are shut down.

Re: Ferrite antenna design in older portable radios
I've tried both ways of winding. If I remember correctly, I get better signal pickup with a winding that is the full length of the ferrite.
That said, I'd be curious to know the purity differences

Tassie Changes
In the next couple of weeks 7BU is going to FM and will be on 100.9. 7AD will be on 98.9FM.
I will be keeping a close ear on 558kHz and 900kHz during the change to see what stations them shutting down

Except for one broadcast station at 1650KHz in Southern Los Angeles County, everything I hear in the extended ban is Part 15 and therefore DX past a couple of miles - local community service

The "extended" AM (MW) band (including 1610-1700 kHz) was approved for North America in 1988. Receivers typically did not tune beyond 1600 kHz before that. The first extended band station in the US

Re: Ferrite antenna design in older portable radios
A lot of European radios from my collection have unusual windings, and excellent performance, including radios with coils at both ends of the ferrite.
Some time ago I looked for internal Online

Ferrite antenna design in older portable radios
I've accumulated portable radios dating from the 1950s to the present. I've noticed that in general, older radios were usually wound with the turns widely spaced. I have an old 8-inch ferrite antenna

Interesting radio. I wonder why it doesn't cover the entire "Standard
Broadcast"? Maybe they found a container of pre-1980s analog tuners
and decided to build a product instead of land-filling

Yes, it's not an ULR, but it is interesting to me anyway. I have a collection of a dozen or so 2 D cell portables.
