Gary, what a great job you have done putting together the 2008 summer
shootout. i haven't read everything yet but am very impressed with your work. so much so i ordered a DT400W today. See previous post for link from where i purchased it. i did see one typo in the sensitivity table, in the SRF-T615 row, 3rd column it reads "steady weak audio (30". my guess is should read 'steady weak audio (3)'. i'm not trying to lint pick but did notice it and thought you may want to correct the file for future use. Thank you very much for all your enjoyable hard work. i am sure everyone will make good use of this info Ron N8APZ

Re: DT-400W Performance
Hello Joe and Ron,
Thank you both for the excellent links and
information on the new Sangean DT-400W model.
After ordering three DT-400W review models for the
Summertime Shootout and having all three units arrive from the factory in an
excellent state of wide-band AM sensitivity, I can strongly recommend this
innovative new receiver for any Ultralight DXer looking for a thrilling
fall DX season. It is highly unusual for the Chinese factories to
consistently perform excellent AM alignments, but Sangean has apparently managed
to accomplish this. As long as you can tolerate the yellow color,
you'll love it :>)
As explained in the Shootout, the E100 would still
be the preferable choice for modifications and/or 9 kHz split frequency DXers,
but with two outstanding Ultralight models to choose from, this
upcoming fall DX season should be a real thriller for everybody!

Re: Eton E100 tuning via knob
Gary Kinsman
Hi Gary,

Thanks for replying to my question. My E100 is S/N E10-0704030006, purchased from Durham Radio back in May. It does appear that the white tuning shaft to which the tuning knob attaches does "wobble" a tiny bit when rotated. This may be the problem, but I'm not sure how to correct it. I'll have to attempt further disassembly at some point. (This is just my luck with Eton products I guess. I had two high serial number E1XM units with bad sync detector noise in USB/LSB sync, and Eton declined to repair them, saying this was "normal," even though it didn't occur on two lower serial number units that I tested.) Eton E100 tuning via knob
Gary Kinsman
Hello all,
The tuning action on my E100 is smooth and precise over much of its rotation, but it is stiff and mushy over part of its rotation. Is this typical? Can it be fixed? It's not the knob rubbing, because it happens with the knob removed, and turning the encoder shaft with a thin screwdriver. I don't believe my E10 has this problem. I'm particularly interested in hearing from those of you with multiple E100 units. Thanks, Gary

Re: Eton E100 tuning via knob
Gary,
Eton has never been inclined to provide service
manuals or other assistance to technicians seeking to repair or modify their own
units. All of what we know about the E100's internal
circuitry was discovered by investigation and trial and error,
including the alignment procedure, IF filter replacement procedure, etc.
In general, the "old" E100's have a pretty
good quality control record, but I have seen a defective stock loopstick,
and a couple of new units with whip antenna wires broken off. Eventually
the E100 owners will have a detailed record of potential problems, and how to
solve them. If you can solve your tuning shaft problem by disassembly or
lubrication, please let us know about your procedure. Otherwise, an owner
with an inoperative E100 might have a part you need, or you could
track down a parts unit on eBay, usually very cheaply.

Re: Eton E100 tuning via knob
Hi Gary,
Thanks for your question. I have four E100's
(admittedly quite a fanatic) but have never run across this problem. It
sounds like friction due to a misaligned tuning shaft. Have you tried
further disassembly of the radio, after taking off the tuning knob?
There is a very detailed file on dxer.ca regarding E100 disassembly.
We would also be interested in the serial # of
your E100, if you could give it. To my knowledge, this problem has never
been reported in any of the "old" E100's (serial numbers before
E10-0709xxxxxx).

Summertime Shootout File Uploaded to DXer.ca
Hello Guys,
The new Ultralight Radio AM-DX Summertime Shootout
file has been uploaded to dxer.ca, including full information and photos on the
SRF-S84, SRF-M97, E100, SRF-M37W, and DT-400W models. Extremely detailed
information is provided for sensitivity, selectivity, nulling ability,
images/spurs, AGC, audio quality, digital tuning noise, and quality control
record. In addition, a bonus section is provided comparing all these
models with all the other top-rated Ultralight radio models (SRF-59, SRF-39FP,
SRF-T615, DT-210V and DT-200VX units).
If you have any question at all about the top
Ultralight radio models, the answer is probably available in this
Shootout. Get ready for a SUPER fall DX season!

Re: DT-400W Performance
Hello Paul,
The DT-400W has an outstanding FM section, with
sensitivity and selectivity equal to the best Ultralight models (E100 and the
AM-turkey model DT-220V, which is outstanding on FM).
The DT-200VX RF board has been completely
redesigned in this new DT-400W, making the AM sensitivity significantly more
wide-band than that of the DT-200VX. It is also more wide-band than
any other Ultralight model, including the previous best unit, the $100+
SRF-T615. So yes, I do think it is worthwhile for a DT-200VX owner to
purchase a DT-400W. I am a DT-200VX owner, and I purchased three DT-400W
models....to ensure that the great performance was no fluke, before rating it
tops in the Shootout. It's no fluke!

BTW, I've been using my "yellow-jersey" Sangean DT-400W Steve and others........I too am the proud owner of the SANGEAN DT-400W ULR Receiver!! I have only had mine for a few days, and really have only listened to it in a very casual manner since then. Partly due to watching the Olympics whenever I could...which was a lot, since I am off work on Sickleave!! Also the FM band has been very good with TROPO Conditions...and in the summer I spend a ton of time FM/TV DX'ing. However the little time I have spent using the DT-400W has left me very impressed with this little set. It is VERY SENSITIVE...and although not as Selective as the SRF-39 or SRF-59.....it is Much better than the SRF-T615....and maybe almost as good as the E-100. The conditions here are just starting to pick up a bit and it won't be long until we start hearing some decent stuff on the AM BCB again. I know this set is gonna be a winner once things get going again. It appears to be able to hear stations and the Audio is quite nice too. I can hardly wait for the Fall......I think this radio will be seeing a lot of airtime!! I am very happy to add this little Gem to my ULR Stable of Receivers!! DT-400W Performance
Hello Guys,
The new Sangean DT-400W was the big surprise of
the 5 models tested in the Summertime Shootout, and does indeed have wide-band
sensitivity superior to all other Ultralight models (including the SRF-T615 and
the E100). In order to confirm that this was not a fluke, three DT-400W
models were ordered, and all three had the same great AM performance.
Accordingly, Ultralight enthusiasts can have confidence in ordering this
model, for highly sensitive Ultralight DXing this fall season.
Full details on the DT-400W evaluation, including
its relative performance against the E100 and SRF-T615 models (as well as all
other top Ultralight models) will be contained in the Summertime Shootout
review, which is in the final stages of completion and should be available very
shortly to all enthusiasts.
