Re: Added Photo Album of My Ultralight Radios
Hi Steve,
Thanks for adding the photos of your Ultralight
collection (SRF-59, SRF-M37V, DT-200V, and DT-400W) to the group photo
site. Also, welcome to the Ultralight radio DXer group, and we are happy
to have you as part of our innovative team!
I also have a few Ultralights, but will
refrain from taking a group collection photo, as it would probably look like an
Amazon.com store room :>)

2008 Ultralight Radio Summertime Shootout
Hello Guys,
The "Summer Olympics" of pocket radio glory is
about to begin! Just in time to help you choose your dream DX machine
before the upcoming fall season, these amazing little receivers are ready
to "go for the gold," and banish DX boredom in true Olympian fashion.
NOW is the time to submit your contenders for this
ultimate Ultralight extravaganza. Already making the "cut" are the
gallant Sony Team of the SRF-M97 and SRF-S84, and the yellow-jersey Sangean
DT-400W. The Eton E100, with long memories (200 of them), plans to seek
revenge for being left out of the January Olympics. These four gallant
contestants will fight to the finish, then face the reigning world champions
from the January competition (SRF-T615, DT-200VX, SRF-39FP, SRF-59, and
DT-210V).
Possible contenders should meet the Olympic
standards set by the Ultralight Definitions Committee (promulgated on
dxer.ca), and be available for new (or routine NOS) purchase by Olympic
enthusiasts. No visit to China is required.
For those of you yet to experience the thrilling
excitement of "pocket rocket" DXing, why not "Go For the Gold" this summer, and
join the winning Ultralight DX Team? Break a few DXing records of
your own, and enjoy the most fun this side of Beijing!

Quick FM Bandscan - Bossier City, LA - 22 Jun 2008
Steve Ponder N5WBI <n5wbi@...>
While in Bossier City, Louisiana, for family business, I did a very quick FM bandscan starting at 12:00 AM CDT on
Sunday, June 22nd, using my Sangean DT-200V and a pair of headphones as my antenna. Here's my list of stations heard in a quick 30 minute period. If I'd had more time and not been so sleepy, I probably could have heard more stations by orienting the headphone
If the list doesn't come out formatted properly, it's most likely because I imported a CSV file into this e-mail. The Shreveport-Bossier City area is a fantastic location for DX'ing. There aren't a lot of local AM/FM stations and the northern states really boom in loud and clear on AM at night. 73 and GREAT DX! Steve N5WBI

Grayland TP's and DU's, 6-29 and 6-30
Hello All,
With eternal optimism despite the recent poor DU
conditions, a two-day DXpedition to Grayland, Washington was scheduled over the
weekend, primarily to test out the latest hot-rodded Ultralight radio, a
modified Eton E100. This supercharged model, containing the latest
twisted tinkering ideas of John Bryant, Guy Atkins and myself, has the new
combination of extreme sensitivity AND selectivity, something
very new in hot-rodded Ultralights. It was indeed fortunate that the
pocket-sized modified radio was well prepared, because the DX conditions
were generally awful.
The SSB receiver used to "spot" Ultralight
radio targets was a modified ICF-2010 (with a 19.5" loopstick). When
in Grayland, this radio can usually pull in some DU audio, even on John's
"golfing mornings."
The Sunday (6-29) morning conditions were modest
at best, although there was an unusual summertime opening to Japan around 1125,
which took me completely by surprise. A booming JOIK-567 was heard on
the modified 2010, the modified E100, and even on a stock Sony
SRF-T615 midget radio. The Japanese powerhouses on 747, 774, 828,
1134 and 1287 were then all heard on both the 2010 and E100, at equivalent
signal strength and quality. This was a real breakthrough in
hot-rodded Ultralights-- a modified pocket radio that could match the
"supercharged" 2010 in both sensitivity and selectivity.
Sunday morning's DU's were limited to weak
DU English on 738 at 1215 (presumed 2NR) and to equally
weak 4QR-612 audio at 1220. There were many DU carriers that never
reached audio, but that's been typical for the recent trips to Grayland.
When you are only using stand-alone portables with hot-rodded loopsticks, you
need to be thankful for what you get.
Monday (6-30) morning was pretty much a repeat of
Sunday's lackluster conditions, minus the rare summertime opening
to Japan. 567-2YA rolled in with weak music around 1215, and provided
a stiff test for the modified E100's new narrow filter (up against a loud
KVI-570 that could not be nulled). The newly hot-rodded Ultralight again
matched the 2010 in selectivity, receiving New Zealand with very little
KVI slop. This was despite the E100's lack of SSB capability-- quite a
surprise. Weak 738 DU English was then again received at 1221,
and finally, a very weak talk program on 891 at 1227, which actually
had audio first on the modified E100, a few seconds before the monster 2010
could produce it. This was the final surprise of a very interesting
weekend.
Thanks to John and Guy for their suggestions
on creating this new DXpedition Ultralight, the details of which will be fully
promulgated to the Ultralight enthusuast group (and others) in a series of
upcoming articles. I feel very fortunate to be associated with such
creative, innovative tinkerers. This weekend's results proved that
modified pocket radios can provide DX excitement and success in very
tough conditions-- and maybe even keep a few confirmed DXers off the golf
courses.

FM comparison between E-100 and 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix car radio
Carl DeWhitt
This evening, following a picnic at the local lake,(Lake Ponca),i sat
in our Pontiac and did a comparison between the car radio and the E-100 on FM.The E-100 heard almost every station that the car radio could except one.Not bad as in excess of 60 stations were heard. Some of the stations were heard better on the car radio but most were heard as well on the E-100. On some stations,i had to off tune the E-100 to hear the station but most of them i did not.Of course the Pontiac car radio has the advantage of having the RDS to help identify stations.Sony,Sangean,Eton or some other manufacturer ought to incorporate this into an ultralight radio. An E-100 with RDS ? That would be sweet ! I wonder if there is an outboard RDS unit that could be added to one ?I did not have the time this evening to test the car radio vs. the E-100 on AM.That will be for an upcoming test.

I know for sure that the standard (non-FP) SRF-39 is a perfect replacement for the SRF-39FP. The non-FP has a black case and a black tuning wheel that is otherwise identical to the clear wheel on the FP. The only thing that MIGHT be different on the SRF-59 is that same tuning wheel.... The dimple/depression in the '39 wheel perfectly mates with the 1/4" shaft coupler that I use to hook the 39 to a serious tuning knob. The '59 wheel might have a smaller diameter depression. If so, one would have to carefully glue the coupler on the surface of the tuning wheel and really be careful to get it centered. Gary also feels that the quality control on the SRF-59 is not quite as good as the '39. There are still SRF-39s, both new and used available on ebay, too, by the way.... just not the FPs, as far as I know. John B.

well i found what appears to be a source. something like the
California state prison system operates a store that can supposedly supply those srf39fp's and other items but only does so to be sent to one of the prisons for inmate use. i sent an email a few weeks ago to them and they replied such. this brings out a question i had. is the current srf59 a suitable alternate replacement for the 39fp?? for instance to build a "National SRF-39 Table Model" such as the one John recently has been working on. The more I diddle with it, the better that I like it, myself. Its also very amenable to a number of easy modifications, for those who are interested in going that route. Its great just stock, but usually the sensitivity can be improved a bit by careful alignment. The instructions are on the dxer.ca website and can be done by anybody with a small Phillips screwdriver. You do not need a signal generator, but can align things quite well using weak stations near 600 kHz. and 1400 kHz. Not using a signal generator drives purists nuts, but it sure works for us out here on the Left Coast. There are still lots of NIB E100s on ebay at under $50.... one of these days this no-longer-produced little RF Rocket will disappear from the market.... Great news, Richard. If you don't feel comfortable aligning it, I'll happily do so in December. It won't help much, but every little bit.... John B.

Re: E100 Notes + Stuff

Because of painful arthritis in my thumbs I find it difficult to tune
the Sony SRF-59 receiver. So, after reading John's report, I decided the Etón E100 might be the answer. First, I can't believe its minuscule size - 17.64 cubic inches. One could almost hide it in the battery compartment of a Grundig Satellit 800. However, it's still a larger than my other ULRs, especially the SRF-t615. Within a few minutes of first turning the power on it was obvious how good its sensitivity and selectivity were. During the day the most powerful signal received at my QTH is from KOKP-1020 (400 Watts @ 24 km.). It rocks the S-meter on my IC-R75 over to S9+40dB. So, imagine my surprise when I was able to hear KBUF-1030 (1 kW @ 355 km) in the KOKP slop on the E100 at mid-day. I estimate it was SIO=242 compared to SIO=131 on the SRF-T615. Using my ancient Space Magnet fed through a Sony ANC-2 antenna coupler, the signal was an estimated SIO=443. Admittedly I had to detune the receiver to 1031-1032 kHz to clean up the QRM. The biggest plus of this hot little receiver is the ability to be tuned without the difficult thumb wheel used on the SRF-39FP and SRF-59. Thank you John for the glowing report on the E100. It is a winner. I recommend everyone get one before they are gone from the market. Richard Allen near Perry OK USA WiNRADiO G313e, ICOM IC-R75 and too many ULRs.

"Prison Radio" Locked Out of eBay?
Hello Guys,
For three consecutive weeks, the highly popular
SRF-39FP analog Ultralight radio has not been listed on eBay by the notorious
Florida seller, Greg Stanbury.
The SRF-39FP has been the analog Ultralight of
choice both for casual domestic DXers and hard-core transoceanic DX chasers, and
has certainly had more hot-rodding attention than any other pocket-radio
design. However, it was discontinued by Sony long ago (mid-1990's), and
has become popular in the enthusiast group solely because of its NOS
availability on eBay.
It would be most unfortunate if this model is
no longer available for new purchase by the Ultralight enthusiast group.
If anyone else can suggest an alternative source, it would be most
appreciated.

Re: DT-200VX vs.E100 Comments
MarkWA1ION
I am willing to send my E100 out there to Gary for whatever
alignments and antenna super-sizing experiments he may wish to try. Presumably I could get back a seriously-hotrodded ultralight DX machine by September or so, perhaps for a modification cost in the sub-$100 range. But we can work out that detail later and, of course, if the performance is truly jaw-dropping, price would be less critical. Mark Connelly, WA1ION - Billerica, MA << Mark and Others, E100 experimentation here has already produced models significantly more sensitive than a stock 2010, but we (John, Guy and I) are attempting to create radios with both sensitivity and selectivity improvements, which will be capable of receiving multiple DU's on ocean beaches this summer. Receiving DU's on Ultralights is a tough challenge, because not only are signal levels generally weak, but the directional bearings are usually in-line with Seattle and Vancouver adjacent QRM, making it impossible to null the locals. It's almost the same situation as you described a few months ago, referring to QRM from NYC and other semi-locals, as you chase TA's in Massachusetts-- only in this case, the DX is much weaker. John was able to log multiple DU's at Grayland with his directional Wellbrook array hooked up to an E100, but for stock Ultralights, the DU action has been rare indeed. Last Sunday at Grayland I was able to barely hear audio on 738-Tahiti on an SRF-T615, and on April 20th, had unID audio on 531 looping in the DU direction. But the tinkerers here in WA are looking for a lot more than that, hi. In about a month or so, Mark, it should be clear how successful we will be, in creating the "Ultimate DXpedition Ultralight." Assuming there is progress, I would be happy to modify an E100 for you, although it would be primarily for fun, not $$. We hope many more highly successful DXpeditioners like yourself will take up the challenge of Ultralight TA chasing, especially if the E100 can be hot- rodded into a "dream machine." 73, Gary

Re: Possible Contenders for the Ultralight Radio Summertim...
Hello Carl,
Although I am not a member of the Ultralight
Definitions Committee, their definition guidelines for Ultralight radios affect
all of the activities of the Ultralight enthusiast group, including the upcoming
2008 Summertime Shootout.
You are correct in that radios with built-in mp3
players, cassette recorders or other peripheral devices are not currently being
considered as qualified Ultralight radios, as defined by the Committee. As
such, the contenders in the Summertime Shootout will not include such "combo
units."
However, externally connected audio recorders
are perfectly acceptable for any Ultralight radio, as well as externally
connected speakers, batteries, antennas, etc. Such external attachments
may place the radio in a "modified" (non-stock) status for competitive purposes,
but will not affect the qualification status of
the attached Ultralight radio.
Thank you for your question, and for your interest
in the upcoming Summertime Shootout.

Re: Possible Contenders for the Ultralight Radio Summertime Shootout
Hello Dave,
Thank you for your suggestions of the GE #7-1637A
radio, and the Sony WM-FS493 radio-cassette combo unit, for the Ultralight
Summertime Shootout.
As you may be aware, the rules for shootout
"contenders" are very close to the rules set by the Ultralight Classifications
Committee for Sprint contests, and for competition for John Bryant's List
of Firsts and Records. Basically, this means that possible contenders must
qualify as an Ultralight radio (as defined by the Definitions Committee), and
must be generally available for purchase (as new units) by interested AM-DX
hobbyists.
In some instances, such as the E100 and SRF-39FP
units, there is a constant possibility that approved but discontinued units may
no longer be available for purchase, but once the model is approved by the
Committee, the model's qualification will almost certainly be
"grandfathered" by the Committee, for future qualification.
Otherwise, the Firsts and Records List would need to be altered each time an
approved unit was unavailable for NOS purchase on eBay.
As you may be aware, the Classifications Committee
has issued a general guideline that radios in combination with peripheral
devices (cassette recorders, cameras, mp3 players, etc.) are not currently being
considered as qualified for Ultralight Radio designation. This guideline
is also being observed for qualification as an Ultralight Radio shootout
contender. Radios that follow the definitions guidelines set by the
Committee AND available for new or NOS purchase by AM-DX hobbyists will be
considered for the Summertime Shooutout, although if the units are not generally
available from eBay or other common sources, they may fail to
qualify. As such, your suggestion of the GE #7-1637A model will be
accepted if the radio can be purchased from eBay (or other common sources) as an
NOS unit. The reason for this requirement is so that interested hobbyists
can easily order any shootout contender they desire, rather than
face the frustration of tracking down a rare discontinued unit.
