Peter ...

Just curious about a few things: 1) how long was your random wire antenna; 2)  in which direction was it pointed; and, 3) what are the specs on the binocular balun?

I've recently put up a 107 foot/ 32.6 meters random wire; it's pointer roughly Northwest; terminate with a 9:1 balun from WiNRADiO.

Congratulations, Peter!

By way of reference, the longest worldwide reception using "official" Ultralight radios was made by Gary Deacon at Fish Hoek, South Africa, who received 850-KOA in Denver, Colorado (USA) at 15,019 km (9,333 miles) on a Sony SRF-M37 and beverage antenna on the salt water beach.

The second longest worldwide reception was made by yours truly on the Rockwork ocean cliff near Manzanita, Oregon (USA), receiving 558-6WA in Wagin, West Australia at 14,705 km (9,138 miles) on a modified C.Crane Skywave and 15 inch (38cm) diameter FSL antenna, 150m (500 feet) above the ocean on the side of the plunging cliff in 2018.

Re: PL-368 Has this fault been sorted?

Hi Ron
Thanks for that tip about the antenna, I’ll keep an eye on that screw! County Comm stuff isn’t available in the UK as far as I’m aware, so I’ll just be very careful. The 365 whip is available on eBay, but I’m not certain it’s the same fitting? It’s a bit of luck your screw came out in your case! Also I wasn’t aware that the ferrite was at the bottom, for some reason I thought it was about half way up, so good knowledge there
Thanks also for, the links you sent, I learnt that I had the wrong idea about the ‘warbling’, I didn’t realise it only applied to the side bands, but I’ve checked again it appears that has been sorted. Have you tried the side band calibration? Do I understand that it has to be done on each band separately? I’m finding it’s pretty damn close anyway, generally needing plus two on fine tuning (is that hertz?). This little wonder is slowly pushing my E5 aside because it’s much more clear, and with my failing hearing that’s a big plus! Still got a lot to learn, but it’s more fun  I’m in the process at the moment of training myself to ignore the damn muted tuning problem! Other than that this is a superb bit of miniature kit.

You can switch out the Tecsun brass antenna with a stainless steel one like the County Comm model has. Theses are available from County comm and maybe even eBay. They are sturdier and the green tip is easy to get a good grip on. For some reason the screw at the bottom of this radio came loose and my whip came out of the radio! Fortunately it was in the soft case and I found the screw at the bottom of the case. I opened the radio the rest of the way to make sure the end connector on the antenna wire didn't move away from its position and I could re-screw the whip antenna back in. I saw the internal ferrite and it is tiny! Its all of 1 3/8 inches long and laying horizontally at the base of the radio. Good to know if you use an external antenna with a ferrite probe attachment or something like the ferrite stick antennas.

Hope you enjoy the 368! Do you know about the "hidden" features? Heres a link to the SWLing article. Download the spredsheet and you will get the full capabilities of this radio. https://swling.com/blog/?s=PL+368+hidden+features

Hi Jorge! Never thought about the two rows. I’m pretty sure I have the right version, thanks and 73

Hi Ola,
Maybe this article can give you further info. The original PLL DE1103 has two text rows at the right of the red label DE1103 on the front cover. The DSP (newer) one has just one text row on it.

Hi all !

A few days ago I bought a preowned Degen 1103 pll version. The owner couldn’t tell me if it was a “real” pll-version but I thought it was. On the frontside you see “pll dual conversion synthesized receiver” but is this proof enough? Jay told me to look after digititus on the AM-band. If you watch after Degen on Ali express or EBay you still see Degen 1103 pll but in the text they write DSP. I’m confused, have I a real one or not?

This kiddie on SSB absolutely rocks! I have had more fun with this in 24 hours than I have with any of my previous receivers. That includes PL-330, PL-660 and my Etón E5 (which I still use because it’s just so damn friendly) and a few other old cheapies. This PL-368 is so stable and clear. I have so far mainly used it with headphones (not earbuds) so as not to upset she who must be obeyed, but the loudspeaker makes speech very clear and isn’t in my opinion tinny in any way. The only minor annoyance I’ve found is getting hold of the tip of the antenna to pull it out, not easy. I don’t quite understand why they’ve done it because previous models in this style have had the much more usable inverted cone type. This very minor issue aside I would say to anyone with an interest in shortwave to get out there and buy one immediately! They’re so cheap you just can’t go wrong.

Hi, I agree, it is pure junk. It worked well on shortwave but totally useless on mediumwave. BNC connections was bad. When turning the loop, lots of interference. Money in the garbagebox

I use the ETM function in a Tecsun PL-398MP.
It is a very sensitive and fast scan. Other Tecsun DSP portables also have this feature.

Gord, I’m not sure what you mean by a ‘bit of a jump here’?

Re: Recording from portable receiver

Hi Ola
You don’t actually say whether or not the report will be verbal or written? If verbal then joining both files together at a later date is fairly simple, or what I have come to do is add quick notes either directly on top of the recording, or kill the volume on the receiver and add them on at the end. This method obviously avoids any later editing. The options for using a line out socket, if you have one, will vary with equipment. My quick notes will essentially include frequency, time and receiver. Additionally if you only record a short example you could add such stuff as ‘Enrico, north Italy, talking to Ron etc’, you get the idea.
