It's certainly possible to push the boundaries as you guys have demonstrated. I've modified a PL-310ET to accept an external MW or LW antenna using a shielded transformer in place of the ferrite that is still tuned by the varactor diode in the Si4734 chip. This allows me to use any antenna I wish. I've managed to hear a number of North Americans with this.
Yesterday evening on my SDR, a trace on the waterfall on 680 between approx 1735 and 1830, but too weak for any audio. Nothing this evening. Spain isn't the big signal problem here, it's Droitwich on 693 I need to be able to null. Regards, Nick

Currently, in Tokyo, Japan, I can receive Mongolian broadcasts from Chifeng Radio and Television Station Mongolian General Radio (赤峰广播电视台蒙古语综合广播) in Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China and Chinese broadcasts from the unknown Chinese station on 1170kHz. These are not usually received.

My main radio project for 2022 is putting together a show for shortwave radio, Postcard Panorama, a listener mailbag program about all aspects of radio with a focus on monthly themes. Working on the first episode this evening, actually. (Your original post is the type of story I'm looking for, Paul, since January's theme is "In with the New," so I thought I'd mention this here.) And since M. mentioned a Radiwow R-108, I have to say I'm looking forward to taking mine (and my Tecsun PL-380) somewhere well away from all the neighborhood noise in the coming year. Not sure if I'll find such a place, but I'll definitely keep looking. Tammy

Hi Nick Last winter I managed what I thought I’d never do at my home location. That was reception of KBRW on Tecsun PL380 boosted by a Gary DeBock outrigger ferrite rod at my location just east of York.
Reception was only just possible due to Euro interference and noise but none the less amazed me.
So it can be done but it might take a silly number of hours listening.

Gary.. sorry, but I accidentally tested the Paul Walker variant in a way you hadnt intended, yet proved how sturdy this thing is in the process. I was coming in from outside, and put the tote container down that had the FSLs on top and the toe tipped backwards and one of the FSL's hit the ground... it had been so cold outside the schedule 40 pvc pipe leg broke off on the right side, where it's holding the tuner knob .. when the device hit the floor. I grabbed a zip tie and some tape, secured the leg.. and i'm back in business. The tuner knob, the metal parts, the wiring, all still completely intact, unharmed and working just fine! Paul

My recent test on a PL330 when I started with 20m wire and cutting off 5m at a time and testing reception across the SW bands showed that the optimum length of the external wire for this DSP was about 10m. No significant improvement was apparent using a longer wire - noise increased and eventually, some overloading. Cheers, Ken Baird, NZ

I’m guessing you are somewhere in the UK? If so the best chance of hearing Alaska on MW is KBRW 680.
It needs special conditions and the best time to listen isn’t obvious. Just before UK sunset is a possibility. It helps to reduce interference from Spain on 684. Reception of KBRW has occurred at almost every hour of the day in deep winter in northern Scotland.
But reception further south is exceptional.

Gary, very useful. I don't know about others here, but I have a tendency to apply the "prune juice theory" to antennas -- ie, if a little bit is good, then a whole lot more ought to be great, right? (Don't try this with prune juice). Cheers, Jock

Hi. I suspect that they would have some level of protection, so unless you are standing next to a high power transmitter site, you should not "damage" your radio. Paul

these days i have seen signal readouts of 80 and 90/xx in not only PL330 but also on PL380 .These signal can cause overloads to the specific band if not to the whole spectrum .This can happen when it is connected to an external antenna via the plug or by connecting it on the telescopic antenna This i not only for the Tescun models but also other as the XHData 108 and 808 As in result can such so high signals damage to the internal electronics?
