Re: WOW!! Alaska AM DX Nov 28
Hi Steve,
I realise from this part of the East Midlands with urban noise I'm being rather optimistic with an ultralight. Around 6100km from here on the great circle route on a bearing of 351 degrees. Nick

Thanks for the information Ken, it sounds like you have found what length works best for you. Paul

Just HOW STURDY Are The FSL Antennas?
Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Gary.. sorry, but I accidentally tested the Paul Walker variant in a way you hadnt intended, yet proved how sturdy this thing is in the process. I was coming in from outside, and put the tote container down that had the FSLs on top and the toe tipped backwards and one of the FSL's hit the ground... it had been so cold outside the schedule 40 pvc pipe leg broke off on the right side, where it's holding the tuner knob .. when the device hit the floor. I grabbed a zip tie and some tape, secured the leg.. and i'm back in business. The tuner knob, the metal parts, the wiring, all still completely intact, unharmed and working just fine! Paul

My recent test on a PL330 when I started with 20m wire and cutting off 5m at a time and testing reception across the SW bands showed that the optimum length of the external wire for this DSP was about 10m. No significant improvement was apparent using a longer wire - noise increased and eventually, some overloading. Cheers, Ken Baird, NZ

Hi Nick
I’m guessing you are somewhere in the UK? If so the best chance of hearing Alaska on MW is KBRW 680.
It needs special conditions and the best time to listen isn’t obvious. Just before UK sunset is a possibility. It helps to reduce interference from Spain on 684. Reception of KBRW has occurred at almost every hour of the day in deep winter in northern Scotland.
But reception further south is exceptional.
Good luck
STeve

Gary, very useful. I don't know about others here, but I have a tendency to apply the "prune juice theory" to antennas -- ie, if a little bit is good, then a whole lot more ought to be great, right? (Don't try this with prune juice). Cheers, Jock

As in result can such so high signals damage to the internal electronics?Zacharias and All, It is very unlikely that an Ultralight's internal electronics would be damaged by strong signals received by the stock loopstick, However, directly connecting external antennas with strong RF levels (in place of the stock loopstick) is risky. In 2016 I tried a project of directly connecting a small FSL antenna to a Tecsun PL-380, and it worked very well as long as the FSL diameter was only 3 inches or smaller https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/aq40d24dt7yawrf8qvi2zehoi8evej3g Connecting FSL's larger than 3" in diameter was risky, with one PL-380 having its DSP chip destroyed by a directly connected 4 inch FSL. The CC Skywave was very intolerant of directly-connected FSL's, with two models destroyed by experiments to connect a 3 inch and 2 inch FSL. It's much better to use inductively-coupled FSL's (or air core loops) if you really want high DXing gain with Ultralights. Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA)

Hi. I suspect that they would have some level of protection, so unless you are standing next to a high power transmitter site, you should not "damage" your radio. Paul

Overloads in Tescun radios (and other DSP radios )
Zacharias Liangas
Hello
these days i have seen signal readouts of 80 and 90/xx in not only PL330 but also on PL380 .These signal can cause overloads to the specific band if not to the whole spectrum .This can happen when it is connected to an external antenna via the plug or by connecting it on the telescopic antenna This i not only for the Tescun models but also other as the XHData 108 and 808 As in result can such so high signals damage to the internal electronics?

Well, today was INTERESTING! Had a weak but readable NRK P1 Svalbard on 1485, Iran was pretty strong and clear in short spurts on 1449 when escaping the 1khz het from KLAM 1450 thats 350 miles away! both occurred between 1640 and 1730. Then shortly after 1740utc, the door flew open to more.. Talk Sport 1089 and Absolute on 1215 were in fairly to pretty good in decent spurts. I also had Moldova on 1413 decently enough but not great. Radio Sawa, Kuwait on 1548khz showed up fairly well. I also had what i'm nearly 100 percent positive is from Romania, but unsure yet if its Radio romania Actualitati or Radio Constanta. It was definately "slavic" in nature and I even heard the word Romania, but couldnt make out much else while live listening Paul Walker McGrath, Alaska CC skywave & 5" DeBock FSL antenna

1485 Longyearbyan, Svalbard, Norway fairly decent a few times for a minute or two each time. 1386 Lithuania really good a few times. 1062 Turkey pretty decent 936 and 1026 Iran really good at times 1548.. I think was 4QD but then swapped to Radio Sawa, Kuwait. 1953 Radio lasi, Romania playing american oldies pretty decent over my local NDB 3rd harmonic 1179 Romania with chatter Paul

LTDXBeaconProject (Long Term DX Beacon Project)
Paul Blundell
Following on from my “Long Term DXing Project”, which I have been running since early 2021, I have now designed my next project, the LTDXBeaconProject (Long Term DX Beacon Project). This will run from now until the end of 2022. The idea behind this is again to log the same ten stations at various times and at various locations across the year and log the signal level out of five for each one. 0 = Unlogged 1 = Poor 2 = Weak 3 = Average 4 = Good 5 = Excellent NSW x 4 ACT x 1 SA x 1 Each station is chosen as it provides a mix of locations, power levels, frequencies and distances.
I have also created a database using an Android app called PortaDB, an example logging of this can be seen below.
