With the end of the year approaching fast, what has worked well / been enjoyable in 2021 and what are your radio plans for 2022?

2021 was a mixed year for me. I started a new job in September which sees me more office bound at our CBD office and also working from home a few days a week, this has meant that my ad-hoc portable sessions (such as during my lunch breaks when I was close to a park) have now stopped. Any portable sessions are now only when I have planned them or on the rare chance I get time to do them.

My kit has stayed fairly stable in 2021, my Digitech AR-1733 is still my main DXng radio. I have also been using my TEAC PR130 at times and this fills the role of my bed time radio. I have also found this to work fairly well with my 3” FSL. I have added a couple of small “analogue” tuning radios and these are fun to use at times and add a new challenge with logging and ID’ing stations.
My experience with my V-115 was not great but a “new” one is on the way. I hope this works better as the V-115 does have some nice features.

I have a few things I want to do in 2022:
- Continue with as many of my portable ultralight radio DXing sessions as I can. Unlike in the past, these will need to be planned more.
- Continue to develop my blog, creating new content and posting anything of interest to the Ultralight Radio DXing community.
- Plan a more comprehensive DXing project. This might involve more stations being logged more often and these results being stored and compared in a different way.

COVID-19 has again thrown a lot of plans for 2021 out the window. I have again struggled to get motivated and to plan many portable sessions.

What are your radio plans for 2022?

Hearing the VoA ID here at 1700UT  on 1566 marks a really good morning, as it's well after local sunrise even in midwinter.

I hear it on very good authority from someone who works at XHDATA that they have stopped producing the Radiwow R-108.  I'm assuming the SIHUADON R-108 (Which is the same, but black in colour and with the orange display) will continue.

I picked up a Sony ICF-SW7600GR for £55 a few years ago at a ham rally. My telescopic aerial wasn't broken :)

I don’t know if their SW outlets are doing this but the AM outlets todqy are carrying live basketball play by play.  Second time I’ve caught them doing this With such a clear, strong signal I can hear the referee whistle blow and shoes squeak on the court

I'd like to nominate the Sangean ATS-606A, also sold here in the UK as the Roberts R876. It's an older portable based around the Sony CAX1238M, but there is only one fixed bandwidth (450kHz IF filter). It has an external antenna socket which works on MW/LW without modification and the internal ferrite rod is a wideband FET amplifier. The audio quality is very crisp and clear.

Note that the original ATS-606 (not A, also Roberts R617) does not have the fine-tune facility which allows you to tune in 1kHz steps.

I've heard several North American TAs on mine  here in the UK using an external antenna, as well as stations around Europe and the Middle East.

Not technically an 'ultralight', but still a portable nonetheless! 

I managed to pick up a rather nice condition SONY icf-sw7600gr a couple of days ago online, for what I think was a pretty good price, £55 UK.

I've just taken delivery of it and am looking forward to the dark hours coming tonight to give it a proper run out. I've ordered a replacement antenna as the one on the unit is broken at the tip, but apart from this small issue, everything seems to be as it should. All in all, very pleased.
