New Zealand Loggings - 11/11/2021

Over the past few weeks I have been targeting New Zealand stations in general. On Thursday night I was able to put aside some time and this resulted in logging three stations at very good signal levels, NewstalkZB on 1035kHz was a clear standout.

WABC 770 - OFF-AIR AGAIN TONIGHT (WEDNESDAY, NOV 10th)

Les Rayburn

Wayne Heinen of the National Radio Club just heard again from his ananymous source that WABC 770khz will be conducing more maintenance tonight at “approximately” the same time as last night’s outage. No word on the duration of the event, or an exact start time. But perhaps another opportunity to log something new on this frequency. Send reports of any unusual loggings during the period to:

We’re grateful for this source providing more insight. But at this point, I’m starting to have visions of Wayne meeting with a trench coat-clad guy in a fedora in some parking garage….

This hobby is never boring. See you later as we listen to see what may be lurking behind the big signal of WABC. If you want to trade live reports, join us at:

Good luck with it. I never got in to QSL cards, maybe I should have, more so when I was in to SWL'ing.

I also sent it priority mail international which is expensive, but it'll tell me if it never arrives, if it gets there but the refuse it or whatever else.

I've gotten QSL's from Iran and North Korea before so this is a walk in the park in terms of the attempt I'm making.

Agreed David. For Tecsun (especially the more recent models) I do the same. Anna is excellent and you get a guarantee.

www.radiowow.com supplies their own XHDATA and Radiwow brands though. Again, service from them has been excellent and I picked up my D-808 for £52 with free delivery and it arrived two days later.

I use https://www.anon-co.com/ for my Tecsun radios, and they have been export versions.

"Odd" AM DX Behavior In Alaska Tue Nov 9

Paul B. Walker, Jr.

I had Kuwait on 1548 well in very short spurts early (between 1610 and 1620UTC), Iran in very well in slightly longer sup[orts between 1625 and 1730UTC.  1512 IRan was barely audible in between receptions of 1449. 1413 Moldova was audible very well in short spurts near the end of the morning after 1720UTC

Kuwait wasnt really audible after the times noted above.  1512 Iran was only audible that once.

Usually, if I hear something.. usually, not always it's audible on and off most of the morning. Like once I start hearing Kuwait, it doesnt necessarily go away till right before sunrise.  1413 being the latest isnt odd, but it's usually audible, better earlier than this.  Most of my enhancement comes in at the same time.

There was NOTHING below 1400!  I might've had a carrier from Saudi on 1260.  I also think i had Saudi on 1440 but with piss poor modulation.

I had definite enhancement today but confined to the 1400 to 1560 portion of the band and not all the the same time, which is unusual

Re: Make the most of what you've got!

i do similar with a 300 Ohm (twinlead) FM dipole antenna that i take with me on travel - i use it for FM, Air Band, Marine/WX, and 2 Meters RX as well. i carry a small TV type balun (300 Ohm to 75 Ohm) to connect to radios with coax input. Works well enough. i usually tape mine up to the hotel window. Unfortunately, in many locations, the room Air Con is normally below the window so there is added noise when the unit is turned on.

i suppose i can also transmit through the antenna as well if i fabricate some sort of matching network. . . .

A small 2 core piece of wire, 5 minutes and a few bits of tape, was all it took to knock up a very makeshift little 4.9ft boost to my R-108's SW signal!

I also had Magic, Tauranga, NZ on 1107 fairly well. Not new by any means, an old stalwart in fact but normally theyre only really good when theyre playing music on the weekends.  Today i had some super good speech peaks.
