"Supercharging the XHDATA D-808" construction suggestion

I would like to make a suggestion for something to add to your "Supercharging the XHDATA D-808" instructions. If one sands down the top of the radio where the glue will go and also the bottom of the level the glue will work a lot better. Glue will adhere to a rough surface a lot better than a smooth one. I would use a very rough sandpaper so that there are deep scratches.

Here is my design:
https://easyeda.com/3ym3ym/HF-antenna-splitter_copy
It is under CC license, feel free to order PCBs from JLCPCB and build it. I think it is a good beginners project to learn SMD soldering, the parts are not too small.
For MW use, don't fit the HPF parts.

Anyone building their own, especially antennas, would benefit greatly from getting a NanoVNA and learning how to use it, especially the Smith chart feature. There is a learning curve to operate it, and another learning curve to interpret the measurements, but it’s well worth it, especially for those who don’t have an RF background. Best $60 I ever spent.

Re: Antenna switcher and splitter

The two transformer ones work better. Transformer 1 is 10 turn autotransformer tapped at turn 7. This transforms 50 Ohms to 25 Ohms. (Or 75 to 37.5). The second transformer is 14 turns center tapped.

The 25 (37.5) Ohm tap from the first transformer goes to the center tap.  The two ports are the outer ends of the second transformer.

Place a 100 Ohm (for 50 Ohm system) or 150 for 75 Ohm system across these two outer ends. This provides the isolation between these two ports.

There is only one ground connection - to the cold side of the first transformer.

Isolation and high frequency response can be improved by cancelling out the self inductance of the transformers by placing a capacitor from the center taps to ground.

For BN-73-202  ferrite cores, I arrived at 330 pF for this capacitor experimentally. See

The splitter I described is like fig. 4.

A couple of months later I bought a commercial 5-way splitter (ELAD ASA15).
All signal levels in the homebrew splitter was approximately half an S-unit lower than on the commercial splitter. But with the homebrew unit I'm able to read much weaker signals than I do with the commercial unit. The commercial unit has a built-in amplifier raising the noise floor.

Just one week ago I found this link:

The price of the chinese unit is is only 25% of what I have to pay here in Norway for the ferrite cores in the homebuilt unit above, so I ordered some of them for experiments. But they'll take another four weeks before arriving here. Looking forward to that.

Hi,
I am considering to assembly an antenna switcher and splitter. Did you build yours or buy it from a dealer? I would like to share some beverages with a receiver or two, and also split a signal to share it with two/three rigs.
Any advice welcome!

Nor is that the only form-factor you can use. I built this one inside large plastic food jars.  This is an active, regenerative FSL antenna built from 7 inch ferrite bars housed in large plastic food jars.  There is a pickup coil, a feedback coil, and a tuned coil. The pickup coil feeds an amplifier. The amplifier output goes through a 500 Ohm potentiometer to the feedback coil. This dramatically increases the sensitivity and narrows the selectivity - adjustable by the potentiometer.   The antenna also works as a regular FSL when the amplifier is switched off.

AM DX Audio From Alaska

Paul B. Walker, Jr.

Here's a few logs and clips from Just East Of The Ass end Of Gods Creation Nowhere aka McGrath, Alaska using a CC Skywave and Debock 5" FSL Antenna

"Magic Talk", 1107kHz  Tauranga, NZ at 1525UTC on Fri. Oct1st. Heard on and off for 2 hours, but the absolute clearest and best signal came at 1525UTC during Toto's Africa which is in this audio clip and gets REAL clear at about 1 minute 5 seconds into the clip. Audio: https://bit.ly/3Fe2Bix  Distance: 7130 miles.

4TAB 1008kHz Brisbane, QLD, Aus at 1511UTC on Sat. Oct 2nd with live horse racing action.  The audio gets real good right after the start of the recording. Audio: https://bit.ly/3iq5gvJ  Distance: 6850 miles

A3Z 1017kHz Nuku'alofa, Tonga at 1531UTC on Fri October 1st with female talking in english and Tongan at some special event live broadcast.  Audio: http://bit.ly/3A5uztk Distance: 5910 miles

4RN 792kHz Brisbane, QLD, Aus at 1519UTC on Fri Oct 1, 2021 with some american radio show, featured american accents.  Audio: http://bit.ly/2YmE22j Distance: 6850 miles

DWNX 1611kHz Mialor, Philippines at 1412UTC on Mon Sept 27, 2021 with bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of The Heart" and some Filipino language commercials.   Audio: http://bit.ly/2YmE22j  Distance: 5110 miles

2KP 684kHz Kempsey, NSW, Aus between 1500 and 1600UTC on Sat. Oct 2nd, 2021 with several fade ups, including some Aussie accented english and a song during. There are three 684's in Australia but all were running separate programming at the time and I was able to match what I had to the ABC Mid North Coast webstream, which was running "Nights with Indira Naidoo". Audio clip #1 (with speech): https://bit.ly/3ozvHTX  Audio clip #2(with music): http://bit.ly/3BccCdO Distance: 7090 miles

CNR1 945kHz Jiaohe, China at 1400 to 1500UTC on Wed. Sept 29, 2021 with a massively clean, clear, strong signal carrying basketball play by play in Chinese. Signal was so good, I widened audio to 3kHz and could hear the shoes squeaking as players went up the court! Audio clip #1: bit.ly/2Y7gbTX  Audio clip #2: 2WHfgJG Distance: "only" 3100 miles.

"Star" 657Khz New Zealand at 1400 to 1530UTC on Mon Sept 20, 2021. Heard with several fade ups including the best one at 1412UTC with a song and some english chatter.  Audio: https://bit.ly/39YY4SZ  Distance: "could be 7130 miles"  Not known exactly which transmitter I heard, as two exist, Wellington and Tauranga but based upon reception behavior the fact I hear Magic on 1107 from Tauranga regularly, I'm "going with" that transmitter though I have heard ZB on 1035kHz from Wellington, just not very often.

Radio Kerman 1062kHz Kerman, Iran at 1506UTC on Mon Sept 20, 2021  Heard with a language I didnt initially recognize in the beginning and U had to run back in to use the "Facilities" so I left it recording.  Came back out a few minutes later and the signal was gone. Upon review inside in the warm comforts of my apartment, and thanks to a RealDX member, we heard a reference to Iran and caught that this was Arabic language being spoken. 1062 here is usually Turkey  Audio: https://bit.ly/3FoxzF0  Distance: 5750 miles
