2.8 inch (71mm) Micro FSL Antenna Demo Video

Gary DeBock

Since its modern introduction 10 years ago the Ferrite Sleeve Loop antenna has provided a compact AM-DXing breakthrough for portable and traveling listeners, and was directly related to the "discovery" of the Rockwork and other ocean side DXing cliffs in Oregon state.

The "compact DXing breakthrough" aspect was emphasized in the development of the all-new 2.8 inch (71mm) Micro FSL antenna, which is the smallest and lightest high-performance FSL ever developed here. Using Amidon 3/8" x 4" ferrite rods instead of Russian surplus ferrite, the Micro FSL weighs in at 1 pound 13 ounces (.82 kg), and can fit in a large coat pocket. Despite this compact size the antenna is a tiny firecracker for AM-DXing gain, as demonstrated in the YouTube video at the following link. A weak signal from the daytime DX station 980-CKNW (50 kW at 160 miles/ 254 km) is boosted up to the S9+ level  2.8 inch (71mm) Micro FSL Antenna Demonstration - YouTube

Since all of the construction parts for the 2.8" Micro FSL are readily available here in the USA, the airport-friendly antenna should provide a great new option for traveling DXers looking for a huge gain boost in exotic locations overseas.

Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA)

going from 17kw on 1116 to 5kw on 882? Yes theyre going to a lower frequency  but i dont think theyre going to gain much of anything here
I found this table ...

Transmitter coverage in accordance to power (kw) during light hours with an average receiver, built-in antenna or 1 m wire in the summer

kW Long Wave 700 1500 KHz
--------------------------------------------------
0.1 60 30 20 kilometres
1 100 50 30
10 200 100 70
100 500 300 150
1000 1000 500 300

Over the sea reception is much better.

KUAZ 1550 Tucson Heard In Alaska

Paul B. Walker, Jr.

Here's the audio of KUAZ from Friday September 15th at 5am AK Time.. the music is KGMZ San Francisco, Channel Q.... the flutter in KGMZ's signal is the carrier of KLUAZ coming up, I think... and when you hear a brief interruption in the KGMZ song, that's KUAZ causing that.  The KUZ announcement is a bit hit hard by KGMZ's music but you can hear it fairly well and the NPR programming becomes a bit clearer, even.

With some Autonomous Communities of a single province, it is the same as with Asturias. Logroño and La Rioja are also the same. Now I don't remember if I told you that there are also two autonomous cities, Ceuta and Melilla.
On the other hand, Patrice, in order not to saturate this forum with many messages about the Spanish medium wave, I invite you to visit the Iberia Dx forum where there is a specific section in which various colleagues can answer your questions. You can take a look at it and see how it works, but be sure to be around here too, of course.

Hi Pedro, just found a bug in my list, so I'm back to 102 active stations; indeed on 1026 Oviedo and Asturias are the same station.
I found no recording on my hard drive of Linares, so I can't prove I had it once on 1602  (can't remember the reception date either).
I tried last night but could not get it. If it is not done by the end of this month I will replace it with Segovia (which is faintly discernible on my recording of 1602 Ontynient, see previous mails)

I think I miss a few cities still like Gijon.

Hi

In my preceding message, I sent a link to a recording of R Ontynient on 1602 khz.
When I listen to it now, I'm hearing the name "Segovia" in the background maybe it's a new one !

This morning the 0725 hour slot from RNE brought me TWO new ones.
Burgos on 801
And on this recording of 774 khz, I personally hear "Ourense" which is a new city for me.

Re: 100 Spanish stations and beyond.

Jorge Garzón

Hi Patrice,
Well done. The RNE Pontevedra recording was at 05:25UTC so must have been recorded on weekdays. You talk about Zamora and Ciudad REal before that time. Could you tell us the exact time you recorded that.

Every country and network has its own tips to get a positive ID. For a regular one local ads, news, regional or city names can be OK. To get the "Iberia en OM" challenge positive ID must be heard and/or recorded, that's why is a real challenge as you are experience now!

The use of loops and ferrite antennae is useful as that's the only way to null the already logged ones, but finally is the propagation that write the rules! A morning one of the weakest stations boost and 24 hours later cannot even be traced on the dial. That's the magic of DXing!

Keep going!

Hi

Got 3 NEW ones this morning and I'm quite happy to have made it from 98 to 101.

Zamora-1152 was intriguing this morning as it was on the frequency 855 well before the 0725 local slot (local time).
You can hear it strong here at MINUTE 24 (it was even there at MINUTE 23) while the official slot begins (in the background) towards the end of the recording (and I checked my internet time was correct).

Also Ciudad Real on 801 (Let we warn you, this is a difficult recording)

Also easy like Sunday morning came a cool Pontevedra on 855.
