Counterpoise question
A technician at CCrane suggested that, if I wanted to squeeze more performance out of my Skywave SSB on the HF bands, I might consider attaching a counterpoise to the mini (or micro, not sure) USB port on the side of the radio. Buy a mini-USB cable and pull the center pin out of it, he said, and you are now grounded to the chassis of the radio.
Question: how long should the countpoise be? As long as the whip antenna? As long as any antenna attached to the whip? Apologies in advance: my knowledge of antenna theory is so limited that "zero knowledge" would be an upgrade for me.

That is an awesome looking aerial and a great video, I am sure Paul will make good use of it.
For those who need an extremely rugged FSL antenna that can survive the nastiest environments (subfreezing Alaska cold, windstorm-pounded ocean side cliffs or the Kabul, Afghanistan airport) an extremely rugged FSL antenna version has been designed. Every ferrite rod is superglued to the rubber plumbing coupler, which is then superglued to the PVC frame with a specially designed rubber locking tab. The entire antenna was designed to be "bulletproof," and is demonstrated in the video linked below. Two of these models are on their way to Paul, who should have some serious fun with them this winter (10) "Paul Walker Variant" 5 inch (12.7cm) FSL Antenna - YouTube --

Re: AM DX'ing Quest
kevin asato
In the spirit of Ultralight Radios, NO. Passive techniques only. This is why you see/read use of external loop antennas of various types. However, you can on your own as there is no one to police how you actually receive. It's all on the honor system here. Select Upper or Lower SB (or just SSB) and tune around for the best signal for the frequency of interest. This would be similar to using an external variable oscillator or Q-multiplier in which you inject another signal in attempt to recover the original signal. By inject, it is sufficient enough to couple the output of the oscillator to the radio using a few turns of wire. Try 1 or 2 to start. YMMV. 73, kevin kc6pob
