Re: New Kmart Radio

What radios do you have?
I am still looking, thinking something cheap off ebay until I decide if I want to stick to it or go back to my bigger radios. Getting out and about sounds great for me.

I was recently looking on the Kmart website (for something totally different) and came across this radio. https://www.kmart.com.au/product/portable-radio---black/3468809

I can't find much about it online, does it look like any other "known" radio? for $20, I might just grab one and see how well it works.

I am so glad to hear this, I love being able to get out again.
Do you ever take anybody with you or do you always do them by yourself? In your photos I could not see anybody else with you.

Early on with the lock downs here and some of the rules that were put in place it did as I didn't feel that ultralight DXing in public was a good look and didn't pass the "exercise" test.
Now it is much better and other than social distancing, it is not an issue.

I am again running an update of the links / feed on my blog, I have added a few I have recently found and removed a coupe that were not being updated. What good blogs / websites for radio dxing have you found? I would love to add them to the feed on my blog.

Construction cost alone is about $95 for this model, but because of the long waiting list these won't be sold anytime soon, Frank. The upcoming  full construction article should assist those who can build one, or have a friend that can do the job.

Thanks for the response Gary. I just received a new 60 watt pencil iron last week so I am going to order 33 feet of the 1162/46 litz wire off ebay now.   Jim

Hi Jim,

Replacement of 100/44 Litz wire with 1162/46 Litz wire in any FSL antenna design would result in a huge increase in MW sensitivity, and is well worth the effort.

The 1162/46 Litz wire requires a 60-watt soldering iron or gun for proper installation, though, and costs about $1 per foot-- resulting in about a $35 cost for the coil and "pigtails" (for soldering to the variable cap).
