Yes, that's the way Phillips!
Peter, it's a pity that these TECSUN little ones does not offer RDS decoding!!

Re: 96.3 OFM 209km D-808 with yagi aerial

Phillips

Yagi's offer antenna gain but they also have the benefit of directionality.

Verticals (whip)s are omnidirectional) and offer no opportunity to null out.  Dipoles have a figure-eight pattern and have two opportunities per rotation for nulling.  Yagi's have a cardioid pattern and so are unidirectional giving the best opportunity for nulling.

If anyone is having trouble with pest stations on or near the frequency of interest, a yagi might be the solution depending on the relative directions of the two stations.

If the yagi overloads the Rx, an attenuator is a simple construction.

Hi Peter,
Could you provide more info about that use of a yagi with the little D-808, and your overall opinion of the results?
Gracias

Gary, did you ever give any thought to going to a small custom fab shop and getting a quote on a small quantity build of your small design FSL? These kinds of shops specialize in small run custom production. I suspect you would have no problem selling them!

The PL-398MP is much better on FM than the XHDATA-D808.
The D-808 wasn't able to pass this test when using a vertical FM dipole.

Hola Jorge,
There is an antenna socket on the left-hand side of the D-808 which works on SW and FM.
There is some evidence of overload using a yagi on FM. I'd imagine the overload will be worse in Spain.
An outdoor FM dipole might be a better choice.

The D-808 has poor selectivity on FM when compared to Tecsun DSP portables. The D-808 also has several birdies on FM.
RDS on the D-808 only works on strong signals. The audio in my video was good but no RDS was decoded.

After Paul Walker's DX-ploits in Alaska the demand for compact FSL's has gone off the charts, but I appreciate your interest, and will put you on the waiting list.

Notes: A mid-afternoon session. Signals were much as I would expect with only 2CA and 3RPH not being logged at all. 3KND on 1503kHz was a very poor signal but was heard late in the session.

Yes after sunset would make a huge difference, for me my station count goes from 15 to 100+ after dark.

Hi Paul,

It was an easy test.  ;)

Zero.  I heard nothing at 6:30 PM EST on the frequencies 1400 KHZ to 1500 KHZ.  Or 1300 KHZ to 1400 KHZ.  Or 1500 KHZ to 1600 KHZ.  On three radios. : (

I had intended to try after sunset, but ran out of time.  That may have been a deciding factor.  After sunset could have been a game changer, so I'll try again tonight.

For anyone considering the Sony ZX model. I just noticed that Best Buy has them on sale for 50% off. Basically $10.

DXing Time V Results

Paul Blundell

This is more of a "thrown it out to the universe type question.

What is the "right" amount of time to spend DXing against the results you get? This plays in to the law of "Diminishing Returns". You could spend hours listening and not hear much or only listen for a short period and get excellent results.
What have you found to to be the "sweet spot"?

Portable Ultralight DXing Session - 12/05/2021 - Tunbridge Community Park

Paul Blundell

Date: 12/05/2021
Time: 10:15am
Location: Tunbridge Community Park, Tasmania.
Radio: AR-1733 / 3” FSL
Notes: A mid-morning session on my drive to Hobart for work. Tunbridge is about the midway point between Launceston and Hobart and is a very small town, it has only a few houses and a community centre.

Results (as shown below) were much as I would expect with 2CR on 549kHz being a bit of a surprise, but I really had to work hard to get this. The weather was average with some rain starting just as I pulled up. 3RN on 621kHz was the standout signal with 3LO on 774kHz not being far behind it.

Allowance for Cassette Player

Paul Blundell

Recently I was contacted via my blog about the ultralight dxing hobby and the equipment we use.

They asked me an interesting question, if they are using a "walkman" type device which has a cassette player, do we make any allowance for this in the size guidelines? As in, do we allow the removal of the size that the cassette player part takes up when deciding if a radio is "allowed" or not?

It is an interesting question and not something I have ever considered myself.

Should be interesting to determine my "net" reception in that range...

I bought several pairs of those Sony headphones up on sale at Walgreen's or CVS several years ago on a trip. I agree that they sound decent for the price.  They fold up, which is good for traveling with your portable radio.  The kids liked them for tablets, too.

I have one set for my ham radio and 2 other sets for other devices I have.

Hi all,

What do most people like for headphones?

Ear Buds?

Over the Ear?

Any brands that you like?

I'm trying to decide if I should "bite the bullet" on some good over the ear headphones or not.
