Gosh, I feel an awful responsibility now. Well I gotta say i do enjoy the radio. One grippe is the chugging. But beautiful little performer. Nice sound. I hope you don’t feel disappointed.

For the past year I have been running a long term DX project, that is done now so about to start planning my next one, once we finish moving house next week.

Hi all,

I'm back to DX'ing after years away and kind of doing a "restart" of the hobby so to speak, now that the kids are older and I have a *tiny* bit more time...  :)

Question:  What is your current "personal" radio DX challenge/goal?  Maybe none?  Maybe one?

I set the bar low for myself, with 10 US states heard (AM).  That's my summer goal.  Might be hard, might be easy.  But an easy "win" won't make me sad either!  LOL!

I'm in Michigan (USA), so I can knock out Ohio, Indiana and Illinois in about 5 mins!  ;)

What're you "challenging" yourself with right now?  Anything?  Antennas?  Other?

Have a GREAT weekend everyone!

We're pumped here in Michigan because we might actually get sun AND warmth at THE SAME TIME here in Southern Michigan this weekend!

Hard to imagine!  ;)

That is spot on, we still have the two classes.

Hi all,

I had another question...

Is there still the concept of DX'ing "Barefoot" vs "Modified" ?

I have been out of the Ultralight DX'ing "scene" for awhile, so I wasn't sure?

I thought that "Barefoot" meant any unmodified "stock" radio that fit the Ultralight restrictions with size, etc.
Modified meant, "anything modification goes", while observing the Ultralight restrictions with size, etc.

Thanks,

Johnny

Hi all,

As new radio purchases are always exciting and difficult to explain to "non-radio" people, I thought I'd share with the group.

New additions to my UltralightDX team are:
  • C.Crane Skywave - Love it!  Just got it yesterday, so still learning it
  • Sangean DT-800 - On the way, but seems nice
  • A Vonidor cheap AM/FM "old school" radio - Vonidor
  • A PowerBear cheap AM/FM "old school" radio - PowerBear
  • Also purchased a rotatable turntable to use with my Tecsun AN-200 loop antenna

Thanks for sharing my excitement!  :)

You're welcome - all credit to the site developer.

I like that one because the AM lists are what you "should" hear based
on distance and signal strength. You probably won't hear everything
on the list and you will probably hear some that aren't listed, but
it's a good starting point. When I was still commuting by car (I go
to work by fiber now) I printed it out the AM part and used it as a
checklist. :-)

Your goals are your goals. :-)

You can go to the link below, enter your ZIP or your city name, hit
"search", and Michi will output a list you can use for AM DXing -
note the separate day and night listings for AM. FM and TV are there,
too. Very handy. Shows bearing and distance as well.

Hi Keith,

Yeah, I'm a sucker for the old school am/fm handhelds every since I feel in love with the GE 7-2500B radio that I received as a Christmas present when I was about nine years old.  Ever since then I can't seem to shake the desire to buy them!  And they've gotten SO MUCH BETTER over the years!!!

My Vintage GE radio:  Radio-that-started-my-Radio-Love

I'll let you know what I think of the Vonidor and Power Bear.

You'll have to tell me how you like the HDR-14 for DX'ing, I'm very tempted on that one!

The PL-330 looks great also and I could easily be enticed to buy one of those!

I really like all my CCrane stuff. They make some great radios!

Congratulations on your new gear! I love the Skywave radios. I have the SSB one and the first one, and enjoy them both. I am in the middle of a move, and since my birthday is coming up, I bought a few new radios since so many of mine are packed up ( not the Cranes - I kept them both out! ) I bought several, but my two favorites of the new ones are a Tecsun PL-330 and a Sangean HDR-14.

Anyhoo, sounds like a lot of new fun coming up! :)

Wise words.
I do mostly SW and AM. Never was much into FM. As long as you keep it UltraLight and enjoy yourself, thats what counts.
