A bit of info from the Medium Wave Circle
Steve Whitt
Who says MW listening is dead?
I’m very proud to say that the latest issue of Medium Wave News is the large issue in its 66 year history.
The March issue distributed to members today tops out at 94 pages – we couldn’t afford to print & post beyond 64 so had to resort to a digital supplement.
73 and good listening Steve

Although the 27.2 cubic inch size of the XHDATA D-808 model places it outside of the "official" Ultralight Radio guidelines it is still a very popular AM-FM-SW-LW-AIR band portable providing excellent value for the $100 price-- and was included in the full article as a "reference model." Read the full details on this popular model in the full 6-page review posted at the following link, which is an excerpt from the full Shootout article to be published soon https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/8y6855bnfmy45rnk46mzr7hb4pwjz8u8 Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA)

Portable Ultralight DXing Session - 25/02/2021 - Conara Park
Paul Blundell
Date: 25/02/2021 Benjafield Park: This was my preferred location as it was close to where I was working for the day. When I drove past, the council were mowing and had the car park blocked. Based on this I kept driving. Granton Park: This is near the entry to Hobart, I was unable to stop due to the flow of traffic and being in the wrong lane. Ross Bridge Park: I pulled up and started to setup but found that somebody had dumped some rubbish near the tables, the smell from this was disgusting. Pedder Street Park: I drove past but found that the picnic table had been removed, not allowing anywhere to setup. Conara Park: This was my last location, I found a parking spot and setup on a table. I logged 14 stations, all were as I would expect with 3CR on 855kHz being a bit of a surprise, for a 3.5KW station, it had a good signal. 3GG on 531kHz was also logged at a good signal levels and with the help of my 3” FSL, it’s callsign and station slogan was logged well. Over all it was an enjoyable session and gave me a nice break on the drive home.

The Iberian Reto URL Long Term Project
Hi, Paul's (Blundell) projects unfolded our wings and we start a LT project in Spain. Pedro and me (both also members at IberiaDX e-group) proposed the following to Iberian DXers: Name: Reto OM Iberia Diurna. (Daylight Iberian MW Challenge) Dates: 1st week of each month of the year. Times: On the Sun cenit time, with a 30' window before and after the exact time. Equipment: ULR receivers or small portables. External loops, ferrites, or wires inductively coupled are allowed. Receiver+Antenna system will remain the same every listening session. Place: Same grid locator during sessions. This activity is aimed to check daylight propagation and variations on groundwave/sky wave components during the year. Also to get up-to-date info on Iberian (E+POR) MW stations. Of course it will show the outstanding performing of small receivers when a good listening spot is chosen, promoting its use. ¡Saludos y buen DX! 1017 UNID
Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Reception was REAL weird today (Wed Feb 24th) in McGrath, AK before sunrise. Things have started to rebound after a solar flare, but today even the big guns on 945 and 981 from China were noisy/weak. But I had this ... on 1017. It sounds very middle eastern-y to me and looking on MWList seems like IRIB .. but thats only 100kw I warn you the signals arent great and get noisy and fade completely out at times but i left the recordings mainly intact instead of chopping them into 4 or 5 sections each. Here's audio recordings made between 1625UTC and 1650UTC. It seems ODD with even the big fun asian's kinda weak and noisy with no other trans-polar/transpacific signals, that the lone one I get is a mere 100kw from Iran.. ntoe ven the 500kw 1413 from Moldova was present

State Based DXing Challenge - 2021
Paul Blundell
I would like to propose a medium wave radio dxing challenge to run for the rest of the year. This is not a competition and it is not about beating anybody else except yourself, it is a trust based challenge and the rules are not too complex. I see it working along these lines.
- Each station I receive in each dxing session is scored based on the distance from my location to the transmitter; For Australian stations, I am scoring based on each state having a value as below: Tasmania = 1 Victoria = 2 NSW = 3 Queensland = 4 South Australia = 3 West Australia = 4 Northern Territory = 4
- You also receive a bonus based on the location of your medium wave dxing session. If it is a new location then you double your total score. Again this is trust based as to what counts as a new location. I would say a 1km radius around each location would be a fair guide. This is to encourage portable / mobile operation.
- Each location can only be counted once in a 24 hour period and the double score bonus only counts the first time you log from each location.
- Full logs do not need to be kept, just a total for each session (with location) and a running total of your score. A simple spreadsheet can do this.
- Any and all equipment capable of receiving the medium wave broadcast band can be used.

DAYTIMER DX TEST--WENR 1090 kHz Englewood, TN--- TEST POSTPONED
Les Rayburn
![]() The WENR 1090 kHz DX Test scheduled for this Saturday, February 27th is postponed. While this is disappointing to the DX community, there is a silver lining. Station owner Michael Beverly and Chief Engineer George Hudson will be installing a Virtual Private Network (VPN) on the transmitter PC later this week and testing it in the coming days. This will enable the transmitter to be switched remotely and provide an opportunity for a “traditional” DX Test that will begin at midnight in the near future. The later start time will increase the number of DX’ers who may be able to log the station during the test. We will announce a new test date in the near future. WENR normally runs a classic rock and roll format that is simulcast with their 250 watt FM translator, W285CG. They identify the station using the FM branding, 104.9, “The Mountain.” It transmits during daytime hours on a 1,000 watt signal with good coverage into one of East Tennessee’s mid-sized market of Athens. THANK YOUS George Hudson continues with his incredible generosity towards the hobby. While he was excited to provide a “Daytime DX Test”, he continued to look for options that would allow for more DX’ers to hear WENR. A special thank you to George for all he’s done for us this season. Also, the station owner Michael Beverly who agreed to the test and has arranged to install the VPN quickly. Phil Bytheway of the International Radio Club of America who started all this rolling by reaching out to George Hudson months ago. In recent weeks, we’ve heard from other members who also have contacts in the broadcast industry and are helping the CPC to arrange future tests. Cannot thank our ‘rank & file’ members enough. Paul Walker of the CPC also contributed to this situation, with his knowledge of FM translator operations and remote switching. This points out the value of having a true “committee” again. Each member brings talent and experience that contributes to our overall success. Stay tuned for an announcement soon on the new test date. 73, Les Rayburn, N1LF 121 Mayfair Park Maylene, AL 35114 EM63nf NRC & IRCA Courtesy Program Committee Chairman Member WTFDA, MWC Perseus SDR, Elad FDM-S2 SDR, AirSpy + Discovery, SDRPlay RSP-2 Pro, Sony XDR-F1HD [XDR Guy Modified], Dennon TU-1500RD, Sangean HDT-1X, Ray Dees RDS Decoders, Korner 9.2 Antenna, FM-6 Antenna, Kitz Technologies KT-501 Pre-amps, Quantum Phaser, Wellbrook ALA1530 Loop, Wellbrook Flag, Clifton Labs Active Whip. “Nothing but blues and Elvis, and somebody else’s favorite song…” ![]()

To the tune of piano man.
Its nine o’clock on a Saturday
As the businessmen gets his loop just right Yes, they’re sharing a game they call Ultralight DXing But it’s better than playing radios alone Program us a radio, you’re the Ultralight DXing man Program us a radio tonight Well, we are all in the mood for some big DX And you’ve got us all programmed just right It’s a pretty good crowd for a Saturday And the manager gives me a smile cause he knows that it’s me they’ve been coming to see To get radios programmed with style And the radio, it sounds like some major DX And the crowd, well they shed a tear And they sit at the bar and ask why you depart? And say, man, we are going to miss you radio skills here...... https://ultralightradiodxing.blogspot.com/2021/02/ultralight-dxing-man-song.html
