MiniDXpedition - Scamander, Tasmania - March 2020
Paul Blundell
Over the weekend of March 20th - 22nd 2020, I undertook an Ultralight Radio miniDXpedition to Scamander on the East coast of Tasmania.
This location is one of the closest locations in Tasmania to New Zealand so I made this the focus on this miniDXpedition. I undertook three sessions over the Friday night, Saturday morning and Saturday, the results of these sessions are below.
This location was very nice and it is somewhere I will make a point of returning to in the future.
Loggings, photos and a video can be found here: https://ultralightradiodxing.blogspot.com/2020/03/minidxpedition-scamander-tasmania-march.html

Re: KKOH NV DX Test Heard in Central Indiana
Lincoln Thormahlen
Thanks,
Glad to share. I did change the bandwidth during the fading of the first morse code segment, but it was just before the first sweeps started. I noticed that the sweeps were wider in bandwidth than the setting so I changed it back to normal and left it for the rest of the test. Good thing you could see that on the kiwisdr waterfall. Too bad I didn't make a video of that. I spent some time before the test looking at various western area kiwisdr's. I have found that some folks setup the sdr to filter off the mw bcb signals, so I wanted to avoid that. I also wanted to be sure that I was getting an over the air signal that was not a ground wave. The kiwisdr used was in Spring City, UT, hosted by KA7EZO, located here: http://www.levinecentral.com/ham/grid_square.php?Grid=DM49gk I am all for more! Please let us know of future DX tests. I will only use a ultralight radio if possible to hear the test at my location, but I will use a online sdr too if it allows me to hear a test I otherwise could not. Lincoln

Congratulations! I can certainly confirm your reception of the KKOH DX test. Solid copy throughout the test. I’m always amazed at how well the sweep tones cut through noise and interference. Was there a time limit on getting a QSL for the Dx test from KKOH??
If there was a time limit, and we are past it, I could upload the recording I made of the test to the files section of the group. Lincoln

November 2019 Poipu, Hawaii Ultralight DXpedition Article
In the first week of November two Americans and an Australian joined up on the prime Hawaiian beach of Poipu (Kauai) with an exciting agenda-- chase all corners of the world with a live DXing format. Australian Chris Rodgers brought along his Tecsun PL-880 and 20" PK Loop on the long distance flight from Sydney, while Craig Barnes and yours truly brought our "supercharged" CC Skywave Ultralights and 5" Frequent Flyer FSL antennas.
For the first time in a Hawaii Ultralight DXpedition serious efforts were made both at sunrise and sunset, resulting in the reception of all continents except Europe on the ideally-positioned Poipu beach (one of few such spots in Hawaii). Chris, Craig and I gave it our best shot each sunrise and sunset, trying our best to concentrate on live DXing despite dazzling scenery, the best snorkeling beach in Kauai and famous luaus. We all had a blast, with the transoceanic DX incredible in both quality and quantity. My own personal 16-page DXpedition article has been posted at the link below, which includes MP3 links for 127 transoceanic receptions from Asia, Oceania, North America, South America and Africa. Several photos of the DXpedition team are included, as well as a bonus section of Chris' DXpedition loggings. If any of you are feeling bored with your DXing hobby, a quick trip to Hawaii will provide a permanent, thrilling cure! https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/lcuery0po9xk5s9lu2jqwwj1zk4wmmqf 73 and Good DX, Gary DeBock (DXing with Chris Rogers and Craig Barnes in Poipu from November 2-8, 2019)

New Logging Database

Over the past week, I have been working on a new database for logging my Trans-Tasman reception reports.
While this is designed for my own needs, it would be easy to change this to work with other stations and frequencies. Paul - Moderator UltralightDX

I agree with Paul. Could result in sched changes, times, alerts, "interesting" programming, more time for listening due to "quarantines", etc. But then, there is always "that guy", eh? ever go to a town/village hall meeting? yep, "that guy" is always there.

I was informed that the French language broadcast I thought was Fort de France on the island of Martinique was not RFO. All French AM broadcasts were shut down some time ago. SO it was either a Caijun, French or Haitian language program in south Florida. I go the coast quite often since its 8 miles from my house and do a bit of late night DX. Its amazing what I pick up "bareback" let alone when I put up my magnetic loop. I hear a lot of southern Florida stations, tons of Spanish and once in a while something that sounds like Portuguese. Brazil, perhaps? My favorite beach radios are my trusty PL-600 and as of late my Kaito WRX-911. In the future I'll be more careful of ID's before I post. Paul --

Re: Coronavirus and ULDXing
Paul Blundell
Thanks for the message.
I believe that discussion around world events which may / are impacting the Ultralight DXing hobby are relevant to the group. If stations are providing more local information (much like with bush fire alerts), are changing programming or may go off the air / have less / no staff, this worth discussing. If the discussion gets a bit "off topic", so be it. Paul -- Paul - Moderator UltralightDX
