Miller report- Just as it arrived the crystal tuner got 20-30 stations at night on the West BOG which included WWVA-470 miles, WTAM-440 miles and WJR-565 miles. Audio is suburb, there is some fading with out an AVC at night too. Day time locals have even better audio. One pair of stations only 10 KHz. apart can not be completely separated, but I could favor either one. I plan to send it into the shop later for more modern fixed caps and to have other diodes compared for sensitivity. It really hears more than I expected as it is. -FARMERIK

The NAB (formerly referred to as NARTB) equalization is very severe and only slightly different than the RIAA Phono eq...neither is suitable for a nominally "flat" input signal and will give a huge bass boost and treble cut compared with a "flat" mic input. But have you already determined that a Line level input is not sensitive enough for this application? If not, I would try that first.

Combos Last April during a trip to
Hong Kong I was highly motivated to chase long range AM-DX, but there was a
bizarre "Catch 22" problem-- all of the buildings had nasty indoor RFI, while
almost all of the outdoor areas were overcrowded, and unsuitable for setting up
an elevated 5 inch "Frequent Flyer" FSL antenna. For the entire week I pushed a
7.5 inch loopstick CC Skywave to the absolute limit, taking it on daytime DX
trips to Macau and HK's plunging Cape D'Aguilar, as well as shoving it outside a
12th floor security window to escape the indoor RFI. For the first 5 days "long
range DX" was a laughable term-- my farthest catch was 693-Bangladesh, at about
1,500 miles.
Finally I sacrificed some
sleep and shoved the souped-up Ultralight outside the security window prior to
sunrise, and somehow managed to track down 1431-Radio Sawa (Djibouti), 1413-BBC
(Oman), 1413-Vesti FM (Moldova) and 1548-TWR (Moldova) on the 7.5" loopstick.
The performance of the souped-up Ultralight was thrilling, but the harsh lessons
of the Hong Kong trip had already been taken to heart. A fully portable, hand
held DXing combo was needed which could provide more gain than a 7.5" loopstick,
but which could be easily carried anywhere in a backpack, and which would not
attract too much unwanted attention on crowded public beaches. In addition, it
would need to routinely pass through TSA inspections at airports, and need to be
capable of deployment outside of windows (with a PVC support system) in order to
escape interior RFI.
Only one type of hand held
antenna could satisfy all of these requirements--- a portable radio + tuned FSL
combination attached to a compact PVC frame. Since the TSA-friendly FSL's are
all relatively lightweight, combining them with a compact portable radio on a
common PVC frame is well within reason for hand held capability. Such a DXing
combo would be the master of convenience-- it can track down MW-DX (with decent
gain) while being held in the hands, placed on a picnic table, placed on a 5'
PVC base, or even elevated to a higher level. The combo's PVC frame can be
supported (with attachments) to provide decent DXing gain outside of an
apartment window to escape indoor RFI. And even for those who usually have no
interest in live DXing, it can check transoceanic propagation and even go after
exotic targets prior to broadband antenna setup.
Current experimentation has
resulted in four different FSL sizes for combo frames (see photos)-- a 3 inch
model (10 Russian surplus 100mm bars), a 3.5 inch model (13 bars), a 4 inch
model (16 bars) and the standard 5 inch "frequent Flyer" model (20 bars). The
latter FSL is the same model which was used a couple of months ago in Hawaii,
tracking down AM-DX from all continents except Europe during sunrise and sunset
sessions. The option of having one of these high gain FSL's in a go-anywhere,
hand-held combo is pretty thrilling. Future experimentation will use some of the
new R40C1 ferrite to make up another series of compact FSL's for this project,
as well as drafting a few of the 3 inch "Baby FSL's" with Russian surplus 125mm
ferrite rods into the effort. It's looking like an exciting experimental year is
coming!

Some of my tube amps have tape head inputs too. I can't remember what the NAB equalization is like for those. Perhaps you know. Most all with mag phono inputs have equalization choices to try. [RIAA, Lon, EUR, Columbia etc.] -FARMERIK

If the output is too low for a Line level input I would try a Mic input rather than a Phono input as the phono;s RIAA equalization will give very unflat frequency response.

I saw your email before I saw your message here. I will use a microphone or phono input on a tube Hi-Fi amp made in the 1950's. I have a collection of them to try. It is mentioned in the Miller literature. Also I expect the 20 Kc. wide selectivity will be too wide, and would want to change the caps to the values recommended by Miller to increase sensitivity and narrow selectivity some what. I will be choosing from four sharply directional BOGs so adjacent 'channels' will be less common on the dial, and signal strength from the antennas will be high. They connect into the house via co-ax so low impedance compared to just an inverted L wire directly connected. I may need a matching transformer at the Miller? -FARMERIK

Miller made these pretty good in the day. More modern individual components would make it better using ceramic caps and tighter tolerances.
For a start the manual suggests using a 15pF cap on top of both L1 and L2, this is advisable, 18pF looks OK if two are handy. I'm not sure what the Audio Output is intended to be, but I presume 2K headsets of the day (50's). These are coil-wound (inductive type) headphones. Tough to find in new condition and working well. Modding this with my low power amp requires two crystal earphones in parallel (a great idea no one talked about in the modern day) to be directly driven by the transistor. This would not need any part of the Miller circuit from the diode to the right, substituting the amp. I'll email the small diagram of the whole radio I built, you would not need my "front end". In your case, the 68pF cap that is input cap can to be lowered to 56 or 47pF. Some trade off of final volume for select-ivity, but OK to use 68pF (not any higher though). Regards Paul S. in CT fn31nl

In his reviews you will see a number of currant Sangean AM FM portables DX very well. I have a PR-D7 modified to add a antenna jack by PK loops AU. When connected to an outside antenna, it beats the other Sangeans coupled with any external coil I have to the same antenna. If you can wind a coil on the ferrite inside one of the other Sangeans Jay recommends, it should be even better if you use external antennas. -FARMERIK Barefoot just go with Jays recommendations.

Back to ULR's, I did buy one of those MLA-30 amplified untuned loops which ARE very compact and light weight, mainly to use with the PL-360 series of radios. When you unplug the stock antenna you can plug in modified ones for the chip to tune, but they don't like tuned loops. The MLA-30 is not tuned. It adds a few more stations during an ETM scan. I just checked around 9:30 PM local time and the stock ferrite for one of my PL-360 locks on 47 AM stations while the MLA-30 makes it lock on 55 AM stations. That is not a lot more, however the MLA-30 really boosts WEAK AM stations so it should help ID new stations. Actually my guess is the PL-360 WANTS a coil to tune. It does much better on my few SONY and Sangean models with 1/8th antenna jacks which work on MW. Probably the correct air core or ferrite coupler and a plug in antenna in the PL-360 may be better. That of course would work with all the other ULRs.- FARMERIK

If I remember correctly, you used to DX with simple one active device radios. I just won a Miller Hi Fi crystal AM tuner on Ebay, and wondered if the germanium crystal could be replaced with something more sensitive or a detector/amp solid state device I could power with a battery. I don't want to permanently modify the antique tuner. Here is a page with links-
