I agree with this assessment. I will also say that I have two of these...one bought way back when it first came out (maybe 10 or more years ago...it's been around quite long time) and one purchased last year and the older one is slightly better aligned then the newest one. It is a decent performing analog radio and I like it overall but having a fairly low accuracy analog dial it is not a DX'ing favorite...better (for me) for program listening and general band scanning to see what's there. Also has Pre-DSP Fm which is not very selective. Jay

Re: 540 kHz UnID-- Australian English Assistance Needed (Again)
Thanks William, Andy and Richard,
Your helpful assistance on deciphering 540-Rhema's Kiwi English is greatly appreciated! I never could have figured any of this out by myself. You would think that after having "discovered" the New Zealand MW-DX oriented "Kiwi Cliff" on the Oregon coast in 2011 I would at least have made some progress in understanding the Kiwi English accent, but to me the Japanese and Cantonese recordings are easier to figure out. Kiwi English and Maori seem equally challenging. A few years back I sent a strange UnID language recording to my Kiwi transplant buddy Theo Donnelly, asking for his opinion of the language. He immediately chastised me for not recognizing that it was Kiwi English. 73, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA)

I have pl-390 in my collection of almost 15 good radios. And would advise you to stay away from it. It is a beautiful paper weight ;simply not worth your hard earned money. Tuning and volume controls are the culprit; they don’t obey your commands. Just my two cents. Vimal Oberoi

While the 9700dx is a nice reciever for an analog it is a little harder to tune a specific frequency. The sound is good and it does a good job of receiving weaker signals. You will find it is effected by noise more bit that is common with analog radios.
Accept it for what it is and you will enjoy this radio.

Hi all.. But I have the intention to buy the Tecsun R-9700Dx receiver Is there anyone in this group who own this receiver? If you compare it to the 310et or 380 is there a difference in the sensitivity And how about the noise? I live in an apartment surrounded by offices etc.. So not the perfect place to listen Any replies are most welcome!

It’s definitely New Zealand. Hawks Bay & Gisborne are on the east coast of the North Island of Aotearoa. Good listening. Richard Allen.

Had a quick listen - heading off to bed soon. Definitely Kiwi. Talking about English football: "...cup holders Liverpool..." then later NZ weather: " ...Southern Wairarapa... Manawatu..."Horowhenua through to Wellington, partly cloudy with a few spots of light rain, Nelson/Malborough cloudy periods... ...heavy about the ranges. For Canterbury, mostly cloudy with scattered light rain, Otago/Southland..." Cheers, Andy (Member NZRDXL)

The signal is strong enough, but with the accent I can't really pick out any local names to make sure the signal isn't Rhema from NZ. Re: New style of FSL........I think ?

Thanks Dean Yes I would think that would be the first time ferrite has been in a loop this way I do have a loop that I bought years ago that was made up in a basketweave style It looks it was made up in a jig then fishing line was threaded through where the small sticks were to keep it all together - it used normal enameled wire. - Think it was about 9 inches diameter or thereabouts I think the sticks on the jig were probably small skewers. Was modifying the amp that was originally in it - It is down in the garage somewhere - It worked very well. Yes noise in the house is always a problem and Sydney - Australia is not a good location Regards Tony VK2IC

As far as I know this is the first time Ferrite has been used in a spider web coil ?

Re: New style of FSL........I think ?
A little more info:
Spider weave coils or basket weave coils are very high Q that's why the crystal set radio builders use them .Combine a high Q tuning cap (ceramic insulators) and this loop has very sharp tuning ,enough so that even at BFO setting like in LW you get a very crisp tune . Also the basket weave coils have very little distributed capacitance ,some thing that has been talked about a lot when the first FSL builders were tweaking their designs. Used inside most houses this loop suffers from noise as any very sensitive antenna does ,as far as i know nothing can be done about that ATM. Dean

Hi :
The length will depend on what value of capacitor your going to use but these loops have been around 60 ft of litz. the count 1200/660/275 etc. isn't so important as the AWG ,46 is best for MW. Dean
