Hi Paul,

Most NZ FM stations use RDS, so you'll be set for them next FM DX season.

I did a bandscan while on the Gold Coast earlier in the year, and looking at my notes, less than 50% of strong signals had RDS data.

I'm not sure what chipset the AR-1780 uses, but the following are my commented posted elsewhere on the AR-1733:

When I had a bunch of portables sitting on the car roof during an SpE opening the other day, I had an AR-1733 (si4736 chip) with me and it was easily outperformed by the Tecsun PL380 (si4734) and the KMart DAB12711.

Which got me thinking - WHY it wasn't as good as the PL380 (as they use a very similar radio chip)?

I pulled the AR-1733 apart and the reason it stinks on FM is that they've added Air Band reception as a completely separate radio system causing the RF path from telescopic whip to the FM input of the SiliconLabs chip to be convoluted. The si4736 is designed to be directly connected to an aerial - says so in the design brief. Adding air band has downgraded the FM Broadcast specs. Interestingly there is also a "weather band" chip there as well that isn't used - probably enabled by software in a USA "C Crane Skywave" version.

I wonder if the AR1780 has a similar design? If so, the FM performance may not be as good as you would expect.

Outside the USA, dunno.  Inside the USA ... mostly.  Is it configured
correctly?  Not so much in the market I'm in.  PTY is often wrong.
Clock time is often wrong or missing.  Station automation software may
or may not be sending the correct data to the encoder.  It's sad,

File review is continuing on recordings from a very interesting trip, with 17 more Southeast Asian loggings from 603-648 kHz (for a total so far of 34 stations recorded from 531-648 kHz). The diversity of loggings was related to two daytime DX trips to Macau and Hong Kong's Cape D'Aguilar, a waterfront DXing session featuring sunset skip across Southeast Asia, and late evening apartment DXing by shoving a souped-up Ultralight outside a 12th floor security window.

 DXing in Hong Kong is turning out to be a bonanza to solve Hawaii DXing mysteries, and vice versa. The excited female Chinese speaker in a 648-BCC (N) Taiwan recording was matched to the same excited voice in a Hawaii 630 kHz UnID recording, finally solving the identity mystery. The same thing happened with a 531-Zhejiang RGD female Mandarin recording, and a Tagalog-speaking lady on 666 kHz with an identical voice to a Hawaii UnID on 954 kHz (Philippine Broadcasting Service). With a lengthy list of exotic targets from Hong Kong DXing, the November Poipu, Hawaii DXpedition should be ready to hit the ground running!

Hi Paul. Nice to read the review of the AR-1733. I just brought one last week as they were on special. 
So far I quite like it. Heard CNR 6 on 909KHz & 684KHz around midnight last week in my bedroom, so it's pulling in some overseas stations on MW. I'm hoping to have a free day next week to take it down to Gippsland and do some comparisons with the AR-1780.

Iv'e heard 2LT here in Melb fairly audible after 11.00pm at night. Now I know which one was always fighting with 7AD when that was on MW. 
On 558 6WA could always be heard late at night here too as it was easy to null out 7BU. 4GY may be more of a challenge but I'll be listening for it. 
Any news about 7SD 540KHz moving to FM?
