Hi Tom,
Good to have you in the group!
I have owned a SONY SW1 for many years.
It is a great little radio. I use it with an external
tuned ferrite rod antenna. Gary will confirm
whether it qualifies as an uldx receiver.

Have you ever had a problem with the audio?
Failure of two capacitors in the audio section
is common in this model, but it is not too difficult
to replace them.

Subject: [ultralightdx] Hello to the community

I would like to say hello to the group.
My name is Tom, SQ5RIX
I live in Warsaw, Poland.
Radio has been an important facet of my life for more than 40 years.
On the ham side, I am a QRP CW and digital op.
Currently, one of my radios is the venerable Sony ICF-SW1 -
do you think it is eligible for Ultralight? The only caveat: it is quite hard to get these days.

Puyallup,WA Ultralight TP's for 12-5

Gary DeBock

After more late night antenna work Asian propagation was checked around 1155 UTC, and TP signals were found to be the strongest and most diverse of the entire month so far. The usual big guns on 594, 693, 972 and 1566 were all managing fair peaks at times, while weak audio was also on 558, 603, 738, 1134, 1575 and 1593. Of course when the FSL antenna and MP3 recorder were set up in the back yard Asian signals hit the skids, and were essentially gone by 1230 (except for 1566-HLAZ, which was at a good level in and out). The equipment was quickly dismantled before anybody could notice the bizarre DXer out in the cold at 0430 local time, and another band check at 1530 revealed the usual December Doldrum setup, with only weak carriers showing up on 972 and 1566.

Midday tests-

ETM scan on GP-5/SSB

4 coil Poly. over toroid stack=33

14 inch air wound round  Litz loop=58

24 inch box loop solid wire=63

The 4 coil has a MUCH sharper pickup pattern. It ignores stations too many degrees off to the side. 24 inch hears noticeably more static than 14 inch Litz.

RSSI tests on AM 700 for weak station

4 coil=3806 [with careful pointing]

14 inch round  Litz=4512

24 inch box=5212

FARMERIK,

I will be interested in your results with this configuration. Once you are happy with its performance you may want to rewind it with Litz wire, as it will make tuning even sharper and the rotation nulls also sharper too.

One new log on the 4 coil Polydoroff, I was able to easily separate WMCA in NYC 130  miles from WSYR in Syracuse NY 215 miles  both on 570 KHz good enough for listening. They are about 60 degrees apart from my location. Not much time for DXing the last few days. There was a weak signal under WSYR which may be a station in Ohio also on 570 WKBN about half way in between the direction of those other two stations from here, but 441 miles away. All three are 5KW night power stations. I should really try to ID that one. If the 4 coil Polydoroff will separate only 30 degrees well enough for DXing, that would be very good. - FARMERIK

20th Edition of the IRCA Mexican Log is out!!

Phil Bytheway <phil_tekno@...>

*** IRCA Mexican Log, 20th Edition (Winter 2015) *** NOW AVAILABLE ***

The IRCA MEXICAN LOG lists all AM stations in Mexico by frequency,
including call letters, state, city, day/night power, slogans, schedule
in UTC/GMT, formats, networks and notes. The call letter index gives
call, frequency, city and state. The city index (listed by state, then
city) includes frequency, call and day/night power. The transmitter site
index (listed by state, then city) tabulates the latitude and longitude
of transmitter sites. This is an indispensable reference for anyone who
hears Mexican radio stations. Size is 8 1/2" x 11".
  Prices: IRCA/NRC members – $9.50 (US), $11.00 (Canada) $12.50
(México), $14.00 (rest of the world). Non-IRCA/NRC members – add $2.00.

OK, rewound with 4 coils- 10-9-9-10 which measure 35.18 X 33.92 X 33.80 X 36.42 uH.

Total in series = 284.1 uH  Cap measures 20-400 and tunes a bit more than 530-1710 KHz which is nice.

This time I wound the coils separately and am using jumpers to connect them. Should allow using less for the tropical bands.  Thanks, I'll see what it does well after sunset.- FARMERIK
