Re: Kaito AN-200 Tunable Passive AM Antenna/Sony SRF-59

I have both the medium and largest tuned PK AM loops. They have much more signal than the smaller TERK and Select-a-Tenna. It is pretty much as they say, the bigger the loop, the bigger the signal. The tunable PK loops are advertised as being 'shielded', and they are more resistant to house RFI such as from the computer I use to help ID DX stations. Both can be within arms reach in my radio room, while the smaller TERK and SAT need to be farther away or I hear computer noise. The PK's are not hard to tune in either, and there is quite a peak on frequency. My impression is if you graphed the peak, it would look like an equilateral triangle. Adjacent frequency stations can be heard at greatly reduced signal levels, but the rest of the band is silent, and the very peak IS sharp enough to favour one station on the same frequency from another, much more so than the smaller loops I mentioned. In my mind they would graph more like a narrow sine wave. Many of my Litz wire loops tune so sharply I need gear reduction on the cap not to miss resonance. They would graph as a narrow spike which also narrows selectivity on all but the sharpest tuning radios with VERY narrow selectivity settings. Last count I am past 20 loop antennas here. - FARMERIK

Hans, The two new FSLs that I am building will also be dual band, but only 7.5" dia X 7.5" long. They are all made, just need to wind the coils and tune. They will look just like yours, but smaller. Have fun with your FSL this fall. Everett N8CNP

Hi Everett!
The FSL is just awesome, and works amazingly well! I also found out that it's an excellent performer also in the longwave band, and your design with switchable LW and MW-coils is nothing but excellent. Been trying some Ultralight NDB-DXing with the FSL and my barefoot PL-310 and results, even now in the middle of the summer, is really promising! Can't wait until the beginning of September, when the real MW/LW season starts up here. This year, I will focus mainly on UL-DX, so I guess that the FSL will travel with me to my "DX-caravan" which is parked on the countryside in a very low-noise environment. Regards, Hans

Actually, I've been quite curious and was considering ordering the 50 cm "DX-loop" from PK-antennas, but maybe this is a bad idea? Regards, Hans / LA2MOA

Re: Kaito AN-200 Tunable Passive AM Antenna/Sony SRF-59

Hi Jerry!
I have no personal experience with the Sony SRF-59, but I'm the happy owner of a Tecsun (Kaito) AN-200 passive loop antenna. This little loop is a really good performer, inductively coupled to the ferrite loopstick in a portable receiver. The antenna is very selective, has a very narrow and good "null" and will give your little receiver a good signal boost. I have logged a couple of All India Radio stations as well as local/regional Chinese and Taiwanese stations on Mediumwave, using the AN-200 inductively coupled to a barefoot Tecsun PL-380, a PL-310 and Degen DE-1103. The AN-200 also allows direct connection to a receiver's antenna terminal, but with somewhat reduced performance. I'm recommending inductive coupling to the internal loopstick in a portable receiver. In my opinion, the AN-200 is a good and inexpensive entry level piece of equipment for ultralight DX-ing, and it's absolutely ideal for casual "holiday-style" AM DXing! Here's a little hint: Also buy a "Lazy Suzan", and put both the radio and AN-200 on the device, find the "sweet spot" (best coupling between the AN-200 and the loopstick in your radio). The Lazy Suzan will help you to rotate the whole setup, and you will most probably find that the nulling characteristics of the AN-200 is nothing but amazing! 73's and Good luck! Re: Participating in Japanese Radio Auctions
Rik
I really appreciate the original post making us aware of this service. I have a large collection of SONY radios never offered in the USA, and often have paid as much as 2/3 the cost of the radio to get it here from Australia or the Middle East and shipping costs from Japan seem quite expensive too. So I would not expect fees + shipping to be cheap from a bidding service in Japan. Some ebay sellers in Japan do say on there Ebay Store to contact them about other Products sold in Japan, but I have not done that yet. In the EU, I believe there is a huge Tax collected on items sold, but larger sellers seem to be able to get around collecting that when shipping to the USA, so prices with shipping seem like bargains. Some of my Radios came from CHUMS, a large dept. store in the UK, and there are others too. Roberts has quite a number of portables not sold here. A few are rebadged Sangean radios, but many are unique. I have the Roberts Classic 954 which I like, and happens to be in view as I type. Off the top of my head, I don't recall radios likely to qualify as ULR from Roberts, but I collect more in the 'lunch box' size range of entertainment portables. - FARMERIK

Oops... Sorry, I meant to type "Ultralight DXers" rather than IRCA members.
I agree with John about his comment on the high fees. The Jauce.com service is the same way. It's worth it though if they help you track down a radio that's just not available through USA sources. Guy Atkins Puyallup, WA

Long Term Ultralight DXing Project - Comparing Different Locations
Paul Blundell
Recently we have moved house, as part of this I have ran a small side project where I have compared the average signal level of these stations at the two locations and then graphed them. All stations were logged at around the same time of day over a few days at each location and then the signal levels were averaged and graphed. As can be seen below the new location generally provides better signals levels with only 7BU on 558KHz and 7AD on 900KHz being noticeably worse at this new location.

Hi Gary, Thanks for the interesting information on the "Buyee" service now offered by Yahoo Japan. IRCA members may also be interested in the site www.jauce.com, which stands for "JApan AUction CEnter". It is a similar service to Buyee for Yahoo Japan, but lets you participate in "shopping" sites such as Rakuten, Yahoo Japan Shopping, Amazon.co.jp, etc., as well as the auction site Yahoo Japan. 73, Guy Atkins Puyallup, WA USA

Participating in Japanese Radio Auctions
Hello All,
For those who are interested in purchasing Japanese portable radios (classic or otherwise), there is a little-known resource which might help you track down the model of your dreams. Many excellent portables are bought and sold every year in Japan, but never show up in the eBay system.
Just for example, the Sony ICF-S5W is a rare classic portable in extreme demand in North America, drawing multiple bidders and hundreds of dollars when in shows up in good condition on eBay. But the Japanese-market model (the ICF-S5) is electrically identical, and extremely common in Japan. Currently no fewer than 14 of these ICF-S5 models are up for auction in Japan, as detailed in the listing posted at http://buyee.jp/item/search?query=Sony%20ICF-S5 Prices are extremely cheap, compared to what ICF-S5W models go for on eBay. The models even include a bonus map of Japan on the back panel, and crystal-provided coverage of the Japanese NSB shortwave frequencies.
Previously foreign bidders were excluded from these Japanese auctions, but Yahoo Japan has introduced a "Buyee" service to help foreigners participate. In addition to the cost of the radio, you will need to pay the shipping cost and a small fee to the "Buyee" service. Even with all these charges the total cost of purchasing a classic Japanese radio like the ICF-S5 can be hundreds of dollars less than an equivalent model on eBay. Full details and FAQ's are listed in the "Buyee.jp" home page. Good luck!
73, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA)
