Earbud sleeves
Phillips
Maybe, like me, you have small ear canals and find standard size earbuds uncomfortable with extended use. Well help is at hand. Replacement earbud sleeves in three sizes are being offered on eBay at little cost. A small set arrived for me yesterday and they are a great comfort improvement.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2-6Pcs-Bullet-shape-Earphone-Earbuds-Eartips-Silicone-Sleeve-S-M-L-Size-/131433946245? This is the Oz eBay site but I am pretty sure that your eBay ID/password works on all eBay sites. Mine works on eBay in USA, UK, NZ, FR and I do nothing special. All the best, Ray

I forgot to ask,
What kind of Q numbers are you getting on the FSL antennas?

FSL using potcores
lamontcranston17
Hi Guys, I have a 12 large pot cores, approx 2-1/4" x 2-1/4" made with 3C81 ferrite material. I stacked them 4 long making 3 rods in a form. I wrapped 21 turns to get about 240uH. I checked the Q and was dissappointed, Q=114 at 530kHz and Q =17 at 1350kHz. I guess the material is getting lossy at the upper frequency. I used #16 solid wire for the test. My cores may be better for LF antenna. Any thoughts about a better arrangement? Here are a couple of pictures, I hope they work. Antique Radio Forums • Information Antique Radio Forums • Information

Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 2-20
Hello All,
Low band Asians were the attraction of the morning here, with
signals potent enough for anybody who might be in Grayland even to delay a visit
to the Blue Bouy. Both 594-JOAK and 603-HLSA were vibrant enough to catch some
serious attention around 1440, with the 603 Chinese co-channel also making an
unusual winter appearance.
Right from my start at 1430 the NHK big guns on 594, 693, 747,
774 and 828 were much stronger than their typical February strength, with
594-JOAK setting the pace with very good signals in and out. 603-HLSA wasn't far
behind at 1440, with good-level Korean pop music hosted by KBS2's deep-voiced
male. During strong peaks its Chinese co-channel (Hulun Buir?) also chimed in
with female speech at a poor level. 693-JOAB and 747-JOIK also hit some very
good peaks during peak sunrise enhancement around 1445, while 972-HLCA and
1134-KBS were in and out with good-level male and female Korean speech. The high
band didn't seem to share very much in the propagation bonanza,
although 1503-JOUK, 1566-HLAZ and 1593-CNR1 all had brief moments of fair audio
for anyone patient enough to sit on their frequencies from 1440-1500. Despite
the potent low band propagation Asians signals once again started making an
early exit around 1510, with the final survivors on 594 and 693 finally diving
into the noise around 1515. With such healthy TP signals showing up at this
mediocre location, Bill may well have another morning of interesting Perseus
recordings to sort through.
594 JOAK Tokyo, Japan Interval music and Japanese male
speech at very good level around 1442
603 HLSA Namyang, S. Korea Korean pop music at a good level
around 1440, with Chinese female speech from co-channel chiming in during peaks.
Deep-voiced Korean male host mixing with Chinese female at conclusion

Re: 2 NEW Stations for the ULTRALIGHT LOG last night!!
Stan Horzepa
Heard nothing on 1560 kHz on the CC Skywave at home the past two evenings, but Thursday morning during my dawn commute, I heard a very weak station playing gospel music, but it was too weak to id.
This morning, listening to nothing on 1560 kHz, sitting at a traffic light at 7 AM, gospel station WSBV signs on loud and clear with the Star Spangled Banner out of South Boston, VA, transmitting 2.5 KW 464 miles to my southwest. The stock radio in my Subaru does not qualify as an ultralight, but it is a nice catch nonetheless. Thanks, Rob VA3SW for the alert about 1560! Stan, WA1LOU

Ecstacy and the agony
Phillips
The ecstacy: A big thank you to all those people who posted items about replacing stock loopsticks. I have taken one of the cheapest radios on eBay and replaced its tiny loopstick with 200mm of ex-iron-curtain ferrite using advice garnered from contributors to this group. Many stations appeared out of the hash and stations which were but a faint burble became quite listenable. Its improved directionality has enabled me to identfy multiple stations on the one frequency on some occasions where there is reasonable directional difference. In three sessions I have logged 90+ Australian frequencies from my home in Adelaide, the furthest of which is 6WA, Wagin West Australia, 1980 Kms, 50KW. My favourite is 5LN, Port Lincoln South Australia, 250Kms, 200Watts, in the daytime. The agony: Many spots on the dial that were once empty now have that tantalizing little drizzle of sound that is just too low to make out. I sit and wait for the band conditions to bring the signal up but mostly I wait in vain. With most Australian stations in a 90 degree arc east from my home (35S-138E), the directionality is often not quite good enough to use it to single out stations on multiple use frequencies. So it seems that I need to work on my loopstick technology a bit more to pull in those threshold stations and to get a bit more directionality to help with identification. I look forward to the challenge knowing that this group possesses and has shared a great wealth of knowledge that will get me a long way towards success. I can't wait for my first international station - will it be Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste, New Caledonia or New Zealand? Time to start buying in some more ferrite. Thanks once more to the Ultralight gurus - you guys rock! All the best, Ray Not still in the past using QWERTY are you? Make the EASY switch to COLEMAK! Available for Windows, Mac, Linux & Android

I had a good try for Simiutaq 720 (phasing WGN), but it was a short few months of effort before they pulled the Big Switch. I did manage the tiny SW outlet on the East Coast in the middle of the 80m Ham Band (?3815), that suffered the same rude fate! If Simiutaq returns I will put more wire out!

Thanks Tony, I haven't heard Greenland on the re-activated 650 kHz yet, I have a local in Gander , NL that doesn't help much in having a chance to hear it . When 720 is back on that should be the strongest Greenland station at this location like it used to be. Good DX Allen Willie

I have a similar request if anybody has a ICR-S71 for sale. Thanks! Paul
From: "clarion1710@... [ultralightdx]" To: ultralightdx@... Sent: Thursday, February 19, 2015 3:29 AM Subject: [ultralightdx] Sony ICR-S71 AM only radio Hi,
I realise the Sony ICR-S71 is not an ultralight however it has been mentioned in the ultralightdx group as a few members own this model. Anyway, I am looking to buy one and found it is discontinued. I am hoping Sony release a MK2 or an updated model but for now I would really like to buy an ICR-S71 to try some long distance reception testing. I will welcome contact from members who have one and would consider selling it. Kind regards, tjw.

Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 2-19
Hello All,
The coyotes must have been howling at Grayland this morning as
lackluster propagation sent a collection of anemic Asians into an early demise.
Some weak signals showed up on both the low and high band during a mediocre
sunrise enhancement but the entire collection bailed out well before 1515.
The only Asians in audio at my 1430 start time were 594-JOAK
(poor), 693-JOAB (poor to fair) and 1566-HLAZ (poor). This miserable group was
soon joined by 603-HLSA (also poor), 1134 (apparently KBS, but too weak to be
sure) and 1503-JOUK (poor) around 1445, at which time it seemed like the band
might finally have some potential. Unfortunately that was the high point of the
morning, as the entire anemic collection started to plunge into the noise. By
1505 there were only a few gasps left from 594-JOAK and 693-JOAB-- the last
Asians to bite the dust on a lackluster morning. Best signals of the session
were only fair (and of very short duration) from 594 around 1443 and 693 around
1435. If Bill was trying any live DX at Grayland this morning, he had a good
excuse to cut it short and head for the Blue Bouy.
594 JOAK Tokyo, Japan Japanese female speech at very brief
fair level around 1443
