The old "raise your price trick after you sell a few". ;)
Don't know if you were around last year when the "Prison Radio" was
the rage. The seller would dribble a few out on ebay and raise the
price until demand withered. When the price went down, we started
buying again and he'd raise the price. Wonder if he's still selling
the little Sony SRF39FP...

Gary,
An irony of the Eton E100 versus the more expensive big brother Eton
E1-XM is that the cheaper radio, the E100, seems to have had fewer
quality control issues in manufacture than earlier runs of the E1. Of
course, it is a simpler radio. I have bought E100s from Durham and
oceansno.1 and have had no problems.

Double Play on 560- Two New Ones

John Cereghin <jcereghin@...>

I sat on 560 last night and this morning, since someone was lurking
under WFIL, and got two new stations for the UL log:

560 WMIK, Middlesboro KY, Jan 27 at 2230. Tough to dig it out from
under WFIL but Southern Gospel music heard. Had ads for a funeral
home/memorial gardens with a 423 area code, which put it right across
the state line into Tennessee, so this was not the Beckley WV station.

560 WJLS Beckley WV, Jan 28, 0615, heard with West Virginia High
School Basketball statewide tournament pairings. I'm not sure if the
southern gospel music I was hearing was from them or from WMIK.

Both heard on the DT-400W barefoot.

WCKL Catskill NY was not heard here in Delaware last night- not even a
het. They may have signed off by the time I got around to looking for
them.

Now at 489 UL stations.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the link.  The G100 certainly looks like an E100 with a Grundig label, with an outrageously high $98.98 price at Universal Radio, considering the identical new E100's that are currently on the eBay market at less than half the price (including shipping).  I doubt that these G100's will fly off the shelves.

Re: E100 Serial Numbers- The Good, Bad & Ugly

Hi Gil,

You are certainly correct in saying that the E100 has a great reliability factor (I also have an E1XM).  The E100 is a radio technician's dream, with quality construction, circuit boards that can easily be swapped between units, very reliable IC's, etc. Now that "oceansno.1" and other eBay sellers are offering great E100 units at bargain-basement prices (such as new units for $45, including shipping), it's smart to stock up on these high-quality radios for future use, including transoceanic DX modifications.

Other 455 kHz IF Ultralights with 1 kHz tuning resolution are on the market (such as the C.Crane SWP), but not with the E100's build quality.  Both Steve R. and I agree (after fully modifying an SWP and DT-400W for transoceanic DX) that the E100 is like a Cadillac compared to other Ultralights.

E100 Serial Numbers- The Good, Bad & Ugly

Gary DeBock

Hi Rob & Others,

For the benefit of all who missed out on the E100 serial number investigation last summer, here is the summary.

During intensive experimental work in the summer to modify the E100 for improved transoceanic DX performance (which eventually produced the Slider E100's with the Murata IF filters), John Bryant reported receiving an E100 from Durham Radio that was completely different in design from those that we were accustomed to, and not possible to modify for improved DX performance.  John then asked for owners of E100's to check serial numbers, and report to him which units seemed to be of the "new version" (which could not be modified).   After very extensive work by John to create a database of E100 serial numbers, it was determined that all E100's EXCEPT those having serial numbers of E10-0709xxxxxx could be modified.  Keith of Durham Radio did us all a huge favor in checking the serial numbers of his remaining stock, ensuring that any E100's sold through the DXer.Ca special $44 offer would be of the "old type," accepting the modifications.

As we all know, Durham Radio has exhausted their supply of the discontinued E100's, and purchasers of E100's from eBay must now take their chances on getting the "old" or "new" E100 versions (unless the seller gives out the serial numbers).  From my own experience in purchasing and modifying multiple E100's, I would guess that about 20% of the units received by the Ultralight community were "new," or un-modifiable units. So in purchasing unknown units from eBay, the odds are pretty good that you will receive an E100 of the modifiable variety.

The termination of the E100 by Eton/ Tecsun has apparently caused a large number of eBay sellers to offer the E100 at bargain prices, unheard of a year ago.  For those who always wanted an E100 but didn't like paying around $50 plus shipping, sellers are now offering new units at $45, including shipping.  The E100 is an amazing Ultralight radio, and such bargains won't last forever.  Check out a full review of the Eton E100 in the Ultralight Radio Summertime Shootout (in the DXer.Ca ULR file area), for full details on this radio's superb capabilities.

Update on Previous posting)
Just recieved email that serial # of E-100 is E10-0503013967.
Is that a "good" one?

serial number issue. I did read the DXer.CA article: " The Eton E100

I need to email seller, so want to find this out.

1) In "newbie" -simple language -what are the "correct "serial #'s,
and what are the "wrong "ones?

2) I may not mod the E-100, so does stock performance suffer if I
buy a right or wrong #?

But, as the ULR bug bitesharder, I think it best to get a "correct"
unit.

3) BTW- maybe I should just get a C Crane SWP, but what is the volume
control problem? Can you adjust it real low and in fine increments,
so as not to wake up partner in bed?

Sorry for so many questions, but you guys sure know a LOT!

Thanks in advance,
