Invitation to Pacific Beach DU-DXing
Hello All,
For those of you on the west coast who are looking for a new DXing challenge during the summer doldrums, why not consider chasing South Pacific DX at ocean beach parks around sunrise? Even though the MW band seems to be in rigor mortis during most of the day, we are actually entering into the peak season for South Pacific DX-- one of the quirks of gray-line propagation related to superb winter-season conditions in the Southern Hemisphere. When John Bryant first told me about this kind of extreme long-range DX in the middle of summer, it sounded like science fiction... but it's all true.
You don't need expensive receivers or monster antennas to participate-- or even an FSL on an ocean side cliff, All of the signals linked below (some quite exotic) were made with simple Ultralight radios and 3' (or 4') portable box loops at ocean beach parks near sea level. The biggest challenge is probably getting out of bed at around 4 AM local time to be at the beach around the first break of dawn. From then on, your DU-DXing results will depend on propagation, local QRM, and luck. Unlike Asian TP-DX signals, South Pacific DX almost always requires a healthy dose of salt water for good results-- and can reach astonishing levels over an all-salt water path (even on simple equipment). The most important advantage that you can give yourself is persistence,,, the determination to show up at the beach as often as necessary to give you the South Pacific DXing results that you desire. You might get a phenomenal propagation opening the first time that you show up, or you might strike out completely. If you are persistent, though, you will probably come away with some exciting South Pacific DX sooner or later-- and a new appreciation of AM-DXing opportunity during the "summer doldrums."
For those who are interested and have questions, please feel free to post on the list (which is viewed by several transoceanic DXing experts) or contact me directly. Good luck!

HARD to tune a station in the MW & SW. (tiny tuning space). FM is TOO HARD to tune, having to play a lot with the tuning weel (up down, up down........... The Degen de321 is easier to use but the tuning weel is easy to turn vs the de321. Steps are 5k --> SW when tuning, sound mute (cut) between frequencies. MW are selectabe: 9k/MW 2 (520-1620 khz) 10k/MW 1 (520-1710 khz) FM1 87-108 FM2 64-87 But MW is more sensitive comparing to the de321 (bigger feritte ???) SW seems to be a bit better vs the de321. Sounds is MONO not stereo. MP3 is also MONO with a HUMM noise. Kind of heavy. Thicker than a tecsun r912 or kaito wrx911 but about the same size. The sound via the Speaker is a kind nice. But i don't recomend it for FM use (HARD to tune).

Shoyu is the black watery stuff (soy sauce) that people over use like salt! May work as a ground plane as the saltiness aids conductivity but as a radio?? I vote that the radio is indeed Chinese. Sorry, my Japanese is kicking in! 73, kevin kc6pob

Richard, I'd think that Brazil on 1100 would be a better bet for you? What ever you can get from WTAM should be gone in an AU and also nulled when you aim at Brazil. I don't think KRDY is that strong at your QTH is it? Cuba on 1100 can be a nuisance in AU cx, but I think they have enough issues in Cuba that this isn't always on. I don't think you'd have dominant Mexicans on 1100 although expect them to QRM.

Allen:
The auroral conditions were subsiding by the time it was dark here last evening. I tried to listen but the northern stations, including 990 CBW, were returning. I noticed some of the TV/FM DXers were experiencing aurora scatter DX. Other than 1220 Radio Globo, I don't know what Brazilian stations to listen for. Here, that frequency is dominated by 100 kW XEB in México. Surely I will hear South America on an ULR at some point. Too bad they're not on the splits like when I heard them in the early 1970's. Best wishes for a happy Canada Day weekend and more good DX. Richard. Richard Allen, near Perry OK USA.

Will do a deep check later today, and advise if any success.

BTW, the brand name is Tecsun, not Tecsum. Those conducting their own searches that search on Tecsum will not likely find much. Joe

I received a lot of responses but no one addressed what I really wanted or asked for.
I would like to know if anyone has a schematic or the alignment instruction so I can align my Tescum Pl-210?

Re: Tescum Pl-210 Alignment Instructions or Schematic Needed

Well, you COULD use both, but for most modern receivers, you -- and the receiver too -- are usually better off using a frequency counter to set items like the PLL base frequency oscillator trimmer, LO mixer insertion frequency, et al.

VERY rare are the current vintage receivers that you can "set by WWV or CHU" and things would likely work, etc. Joe

In addition, this kind of adjustment is best accomplished with a properly attached frequency counter. In many instances, there is no better or more accurate substitute.

I just received my new Tescum Pl-210 and I noticed that it is off frequency and also probably needs to be re-aligned. In my opinion most of the Chinese manufactured radio are mass produced and their main concern is getting them out the door and do not pay any attention to quality control. If anyone had a schematic, service manual or the alignment instruction please contact me. Any help is appreciated.

Correction, the message should read: My recommendation is to select one of the small DSP models. At 38.95 cubic inches, the R-2010D "does not" meet the definition of an ultralight receiver.
