Oklahoma DX'ing
Kirk Allen <kirk74601@...>
I continue to be amazed when I read reports from you all that have
bagged over 400 or even 500 ULR stations and STILL can find new stations. Way to go guys, my hat is off! We now have a full crew of three ULR DX'ers here in northcentral Oklahoma with the arrival of John B. I sure enjoy comparing notes with John and Richard A. It really helps! Good luck on the Ross challenge, John. You'll make it no doubt. A few more newbies for the ULR log here. Tnx to John and Richard for pointing out some of these. 1130, KFAN, Minneapolis, MN, 0052, 12/5, "Your home for Vikings football, KFAN.." The QRM'er, which I couldn't ID, was playing rap crap in SS....oh PLEEEZE! Finally started hearing some "Radio Estrella" IDs from XEFW. Never hrd call letters, but an ID at 0414 was, "Radio Estrella...Tampico." 1580, KKKK, Colorado Springs, CO, 0804-0908, 12/5, ABC nx at t/in, lcl ads. One ad was in SS, but their main programming was in EE. Clear and loud ID 0900 mentioning what I presume to be a network, "Rocky Mountain Radio" because the ancr listed 4 or maybe 5 different radio stations in CO. It was probably wise they didn't name the station with only three K's. Listed night pwr of 62 watts. 1310, KFKA, Greely, CO, 1450-1505, 12/5, tlk show w/ lcl ads following, ID 1500. Re: Protective Case for E100 Slider Radios
Hi Jay,
Thanks for mentioning the Stormcase source. I've
never heard of that brand before, and the construction and quality look the same
as Pelican. I do like the better price! $33.00 is a lot easier on the wallet
than $50 for the Pelican 1200. It looks like either brand will provide tank-like
protection for whatever's inside.

Re: Protective Case for E100 Slider Radios
Hi Gary & Kevin,
The Pelican model 1200 case would be very nice for
protecting an E100 with 7.5" slider antenna, assuming the radio has a compact
mounting method such as the section of plastic level that Gary uses. I have a
couple of up-close photos of the 1200 on my blog:
I use the Pelican case to protect and transport
some hard drives. These cases come with "pluck out" foam squares that are handy
to custom fit whatever you care carrying in the case.

Your plans for the Universal plexy radio stand as a Slider Mounting board sound great. When you finish an experimentation cycle, I sure hope that you will give us a brief write-up and photos. (GREAT THINKING, BY THE WAY.... I hadn't thought of one of those plexy stands... just an excellent idea!) I might suggest that you hook the Quantum Loop directly to the existing stock ferrite bar first and see how that works for you (there are a couple of articles about that on dxer.ca) You will loose the varicoupler aspect of the Slider+Ext. Antenna, but you will have a much bigger antenna hooked fairly efficiently through the stock ferrite bar.... If you are in an area with a lot of broadcast stations, you may get overloading... or you may not... If you do, the Slider as Varicoupler is the answer of course.... I guess what I'm saying is that you ought to take a couple of baby steps rather than one giant leap... since we are all still kijnd of feeling our ay along here. ANYWAY, welcome aboard!!! Sorry for the rushed response... I've kind of fallen into doing a 7-Day Ross Challenge and I gotta get back to the dials :>) John B.

Quantum QX-Pro Loop with E100 slider?
Brandon Jordan <bcdx.org@...>
Hi folks. I am finally jumping in on the ultralight craze and
yesterday evening I ordered everything needed to make an E100 slider. It hit me today that I have one of the older model Quantum QX-Pro ferrite antenna, the one with a 15" ferrite bar. What would be the best option of using this with the E100 slider? My first though would be to feed the QX-Pro output to the slider external antenna input. I am just concerned that the signal from the 7.5" slider antenna would degrade the nulling capacity of the QX-Pro. Any thought on this? As to my slider design, I think I am going with a design more similar to John Bryant's. Instead of a wood frame, I am going to use one of the plastic slanted portable radio mounts from Universal. There will be enough clearance above the E100 at the top of the mount to come up with some method of attaching the loopstick. I also order one of the lazy susan base thingies from C. Crane that will hold the plastic radio mount, and am thinking of mounting this onto a nice wood platform and adding 360 degree markings around the edge of the lazy susan for DF. Maybe mount a nice compass on the wood platform to align everything properly. I am also thinking of mounting a BNC connector on the verticle back part of the plastic mount for the external antenna input. If anyone has any suggestions or advice, I would sure appreciate anything. I am especially interested on coming up with the best way to utilize the large Quantum QX-Pro antenna. Thanks!

I also heard JOUB 774 at 1100 UTC today on a barefoot SRF-T615. The
signal strength was fair, with QRM by WBBM and XEMF 780. The only other possible TP's were hets on 828 and 972 kHz. JOAB 594 which had been audible at local sunrise the past few mornings was silent today. I can't believe I can hear NHK stations in Oklahoma. I hope it continues. Good DX everyone. Re: Quantum QX-Pro Loop with E100 slider?
Hello Bcdx.org,
Thanks for your post, and welcome to Ultralight DX
fun.
The designers of the slider E100's (John Bryant
and I) have experimented with coupling external antennas to the slider
loopstick ferrite bar by using an inductive coupling system, where a
BNC connector runs to a small coil of wire on the ferrite bar, on the side
opposite the coil. This not only allows the effective use of high gain
external antennas like EWE's, K9AY's and beverages, but the slider coil can
still be used as a preselector, filtering out unwanted image and spurious
signals.in urban and suburban areas. In such cases, the high gain of
the external antenna "swamps" the slider loopstick RF pickup, so that
there is no incompatibility or "competition" between the two antenna
systems. John's fine article posted on dxer.ca., "Slider e100 as a
Varicoupler" gives full details.
To my knowledge, nobody has yet tried this slider
E100 inductive coupling system with a smaller antenna, like the Quantum
QX-Pro Loop. This is one area of experimentation that is still
uncertain. The 7.5" loopstick slider E100 by itself is capable of great
sensitivity, as any owner knows. During summer experimentation,
experimental 17", 22.5" and 27" ferrite bars generally didn't provide the
hoped-for great sensitivity benefits over the 7.5" models. After building your
slider E100 and testing it out with the Quantum QX-Pro Loop, you may also
discover that the 7.5" model provides a lot of "bang for the buck." But we
certainly would be interested to know your results, either way. Good luck
on your slider project.

A Productive Evening of DX
Kirk Allen <kirk74601@...>
Howdy Guys,
No DX'ing here this morning. By the time I awakened the electrical noise here was ferocious again, so no chance of hearing much. Last evening was pretty productive though. Here's the new ULR loggings from northcentral Oklahoma: 570, WAAX, Gadsden, AL, 2230-2245, 12/3, All tlk about Aubern's Crimson Tide, announced as being part of the "Crimson Tide Network." Gee, that sounds familiar! Tnx to a earlier tip from Richard! 1090, KVOP, Plainview, TX, 0343, 12/4, ID 0346, "The mighty KVOP." VP reception. I think this was the station playing old R&R hits like "I'll Be Watching You." (ULR station #342) I have one correction for an earlier posting from here: 1030, KCPA, Corpus Christi, TX-- SHOULD READ: 1030, KCTA, Corpus Christi, TX. Sorry. On the subject of comparing the Eton E-100 slider with passive loop antennae, I'll have to defer any more comments on that until John helps me replace the ferrite rod in the one here. But as I've said, even with the rod split in apx. half, it still outperforms both the Tecsun Loop and the SAT (Select-a-Tenna). 73's and good DX! Kirk Allen Ponca City, OK

Your day time catches from Minnesota and South Dakota in the upper half of the band are amazing!I have caught both of those states on day time dx while i was in Oklahoma. But, they were in the lower half of the band.I think your catches on the upper half of the band could have been residual sky wave propagation.During late fall and early winter, i am not sure that the d layer ever fully ionizes. This might mean less absorbtion and allow some weak sky wave to sneak through.Any comments on this from anyone ? Ultralight TP's for 12-04-08

Hi all from Anchorage, Alaska!

Unfortunately, conditions up here weren't any better than others have been reporting on the IRCA board. I was hoping that, with the late sunrise here (9:30 AM local!), I could DX all morning before my training sessions started, but it was almost a complete bust. I heard 774-Japan last night shortly before retiring and hoped for the best, but there was only a couple very weak audios in the 1300's this morning, ones on which I couldn't quite tell which Asian language was being spoken. Sigh, maybe tomorrow. I brought a stock e100 and high-Q loop, as I couldn't figure out how to safely get my new e100 slider up here. The case I was going to use didn't seem like it would protect the antenna superstructure well enough, so I decided not to chance it. Gotta get me one of those James Bond cases that Colin and Bruce are using. 73 - Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA (on most days)

Hi Kevin,
For those with the compact plastic slider E100's,
(like you, me and Collin), I'm currently searching for suitable soft plastic
containers that would be a nice fit for DXpedition use, with plentiful padding
for any contingency. Lacking that, I'll probably switch over to the
woodworking shop to design and build something that looks like a DXer's jewelry

Slider antenna vs. C. Crane Twin Coil
Gary Kinsman
Hi Gary DeB.,
How does your slider antenna compare to the C. Crane Twin Coil antenna? I use the latter inductively coupled with my E100, and it allows reception of stations that are completely inaudible with the internal ferrite bar. I have fun using the Twin Coil with my E100, E10, DT-200VX, and 7600GR. Not only does it provide lots of gain, but it's convenient to be able to rotate the antenna while leaving the radio stationary. I have two Twin Coil "orphans" that I purchased for only $50 each. Regards, Gary

KRVA usually dominates 1600 kHz here at night. I'm afraid once I logged it I've avoided it. Sometimes it's heard during the day QRMing KUSH in Cushing. Other than Japanese and Chinese, I'm terrible at identifying Asian languages. The only way I know a language is from South Asian is because of the accens. Also, my old ears are playing out. Congratulation on the new stations logged Kirk. Yes it was a windy
