Logging Question

Wondering what most are using for logging. A logging program? If so, which? A simple homemade spreadsheet? If so, what does your entries layout look like?
Thanks, Tony

unidentified Spanish on 1220 kHz

Carl DeWhitt

? 1220 0908-0911 EDT 9/29/2011
While listening to WCPH 1220 Etowah ,TN,I heard underneath them an unidentified Spanish language station. When the broadside of my new homebrew 4 foot loop was turned mostly east-west,I could null out WCPH to hear the Spanish station in the clear at fair level.I could not stay with it to i.d. time.Music and talk were heard. One possibility maybe WOTS Kisssimmee,FL a Spanish language station relaying WPRD Winter Park,FL.This is the only possibility I could find in a nearby state.

New XE Logged This Morning

Kirk

Hi everyone,

Yet again, tips from Richard Allen helped me bag one new XE station this morning. He's been hearing this one for a while now, but for some reason it's eluded me until now. This was the only freq I listened to after work this morning. Logged this on the Eton E-100 Slider w/ SAT.

920, XEHQ, Hermosillo, Sonora, 1134-1230 UTC, 9/29/11, playing many back to back vcl mx selections with no breaks in between. A wide variety of songs were hrd including pops, bandera, and musica romantica. Finally at 1227 a woman announcer was hrd w/ a clear "R. Capital" ID! A G sig from 1215-1230. During this time IDs were also noted from XEQD (Chihuahua) and XECQ (Sinaloa). Sta #810, LAm #172-

At one point this morning I had at least 4 different XE stations audible on this channel. I hrd the Himno Nacional from a station at 1215 and from another one at 1213.

73 from Okieland.

Re: WDHP heard this AM in CT

Kirk

Hi Paul,

Congratulations on hearing WDHP!! That's a great catch. I heard them once while I lived in the Houston area, but here in Okieland, they're one tough station to hear. I'd almost forgotten about the X band...been a long time since I even tuned that high on the band.

Keep up the great DX!

This is 4 feet across and about 7 high from the bottom of the base to the top of the loop.

Re: new ULR catch tonight!

I logged this station tonight 9/28/2011.I believe this is a new one for me.Here are the details:
WTAB 1370 Tabor City,N.C. 2205-2210 EDT good signal on tune in fading to poor.Country Music ,WTAB i.d. followed by more country. Not bad for 109 watts. Heard on Eton E-100 and homebrew 4 foot loop.

Also heard oldies on frequency....a Barry White tune....no sign of WSPD Toledo. Couldn't stick around to try to figure out who the oldies was.

Still, one new ULR catch: cool!

Hi Patrice,

Nice catch on Armenia for your 39th nation. I have a feeling we were hearing that one here as well a few weeks ago when solar conditions were better. Could hear something in Arabic or Farsi under France but couldn't catch an ID on it.

Tecsun DR-920 - A Review 5 Years Later

Stephen Ponder <stephen_ponder@...>

I was digging around in my "radio vault" (the closet) and found my
Tecsun DR-920.  For those of you who may remember, I did a quick
"mini-review" of the DR-920 back in December 2005 when I first
received it.  I dug around on Bing and found that review.  I cannot
believe it was so positive!  Chalk it up to inexperience, the Christmas
spirit, and never having actually used it in a DX session, I guess.

Here are the radio's physical details from my "mini-review" for those
who are not familiar with the radio ...

The DR-920 is an analogue radio with a digital
> frequency counter display. The right side of the
radio has a "real" tuning knob (one that twists
instead of rolling up/down) and a slide switch
that allows the user to switch between a buzzer
and the radio for the alarm function.
The left side of the radio has a volume knob
(the "up/down" rolling type), a 3.5 mm mono
headphone jack, and a 3VDC jack in case you
wanted to use one of those "wall-warts."
The bands covered by the DR-920 are:
MW - 525 to 1640 kHz (1 kHz steps)
FM - 76.0 to 108.0 MHz (100 kHz steps)
SW - 3.90 to 21.85 MHz (5 kHz steps)
The SW coverage is not continuous.  Instead, it is divided into 10 bands.
> The bandswitch is a slide switch that takes you through FM, MW, and
> SW1-SW10.
Here are the SW bands:
SW1 - 3.90 to 4.00 MHz (75 Metre Band)
SW2 - 4.75 to 5.06 MHz (60 Metre Band)
SW3 - 5.95 to 6.20 MHz (49 Metre Band)
SW4 - 7.10 to 7.30 MHz (41 Metre Band)
SW5 - 9.50 to 9.90 MHz (31 Metre Band)
SW6 - 11.65 to 12.05 MHz (25 Metre Band)
SW7 - 13.60 to 13.80 MHz (22 Metre Band)
SW8 - 15.10 to 15.60 MHz (19 Metre Band)
SW9 - 17.55 to 17.90 MHz (16 Metre Band)
SW10 - 21.45 to 21.85 MHz (13 Metre Band)
The DR-920 does not have SSB capability,
but for a less-than-$20 USD radio, it does
a pretty good job.
It's approximately the same size as the
Tecsun DR-910 (a.k.a. Grundig G1000A),
which is 74 x 116 x 28 mm, and weighs
approximately 200 grams.
The DR-920 uses 2 AA batteries and has
a detachable battery cover on the back
of the radio.  The flip-stand, also on
the back, has the SW bands printed on it.

In that first review, I forgot to mention that the DR-920 has a sleep timer,
which is a "plus" for any radio that I purchase.  Also, the dial backlight
briefly illuminates whenever you turn the tuning knob.  That way it doesn't
draw down the batteries by staying on all the time, but allows you to see
which frequency you're on.

Now to my "5 Years Later" review ...

Mediumwave - Since the DR-920 is an analogue radio with a digital display,
it just doesn't compare to the newer DSP Ultralights.  One thing in its favor,
though, is that the tuning knob is fairly stiff, so once you tune to a frequency,
the radio tends to stay there.  The MW band does not cover the entire X-band,
so that's a bummer.  The upper limit is "around" 1640 kHz.

The DR-920's selectivity is fairly broad, which, to me, is a disappointment,
because I've gotten spoiled by the newer PL-310 with the variable bandwidth.
Sensitivity is poor.  Semi-local KLVI-560 in Beaumont, TX, which puts out a
booming signal on almost every radio I own, could barely be heard on the DR-920.
Can you say, "epic failure?"

FM - Once again, the tight tuning knob helps, but the selectivity is poor, which
means the local stations come in loud and clear, but cover several MHz of the
display.  No "in-between" stations on this radio!

Shortwave - The good thing is that the SW coverage includes the 75 and 60 metre
bands, which many newer radios ignore.  The bad thing is that those bands, along
with the rest of the SW bands, are pretty deaf.  Cuba's Radio Rebelde on 5025 kHz
puts out a smoking signal at night to my QTH.  Just like the KLVI issue on MW, it
could barely be heard on the DR-920.  The afternoon (local time) soccer matches
on Radio Nacional Amazonia from Brasil on 11780 kHz are usually an easy catch
on my Grundig Mini-World 200 analogue radio (see David Reeder's review on
RadioIntel, http://www.radiointel.com/review-grundig200.htm), but I can barely hear
them on the DR-920.

Let me give my DR-920 the benefit of the doubt.  Maybe I got a bad radio in sore
need of an alignment.  It's interesting, though, that when I did my search in Bing,
I didn't find very many reviews of the radio.  Hmmm ...

As with all reviews and reviewers, your mileage may vary.

The eve of a major breakthrough

patrice.privat

Hi

Just a few words to tell you that I am on the edge of a major breakthrough in Ultralight DXing as the X-band is now alive almost every day at sunrise.
My record distance is still 5,983 km with WWKB-1520 Buffalo, New York but again this morning there was a flutter with the DSP bravely trying to root out WCNZ-1660, Marco Island, FL.
I know that this is going to happen, it's a matter of days.

Monday morning, I was on the heavy gear, listening to WPLA-1670 "Fox Sports 16-70" from Dry Branch,GA, and I did not have the time to check with the PL-380 but I'm sure it must have been audible on it.

So expect a mail about that major break thru any day now !!

585-2WEB Verification Letter (and goodies)

Gary DeBock

Hello All,

Received from Production Director (and Breakfast Announcer) David Sharp
was a very welcome verification letter (and two bumper stickers) from
585-2WEB, a 10 kw station in Bourke, Australia. This DU station was
received on August 15th at the "Rockwork" ocean viewpoint cliff at Cape
Falcon on the NW Oregon coast, with a PL-380 Ultralight radio and new
8" diameter FSL antenna. To my knowledge, it was the first reception of
2WEB on Ultralight radios in North America (John Bryant and I never had
a trace of it during joint DXpeditions at Grayalnd, WA).

David mentioned that mine was the first report that he has received
from the USA during the 12 years that he's worked there, and that the
only other report that 2WEB has received from North America during that
time was one from Alberta (maybe Nigel?). Unlike many other stations
2WEB and David (an avid DXer who once lived in Florida) seem very
motivated to promptly answer reception reports, so those who have heard
their music programs (classic rock, soft rock, country, etc.) shouldn't
hesitate to report reception. David also keeps close records of each
song played, so it was easy for him to confirm my reception both last
month, and in July of last year (at Seaside, OR). By an amazing
coincidence, he is also a current member of our Ultralightdx Yahoo
group!

Thanks again to Chuck and Bruce, who listened to MP3's of both of these
receptions, and suggested the identity of the station (which was right
on, even back in July of last year).

ULR DX........LONGWAVE BEACONS logged in Branson, MISSOURI........

robert ross

Hi Guys:

We're on Vacation in Branson, MISSOURI...and I brought a few ULRs along to do a little DXing after everyone has gone to bed!! Last night was the first night I was able to stay awake long enough to actually turn on the radio and do any DXing!!|

Not sure if these Beacons are actually DX as far as difficulty goes....as I'm not familiar with normal conditions here .........but these are all NEWLY Heard for me as it's my first visit to this area. Of course they won't count for my Home Logbook...but maybe they will be something others can hear from their location???

The Condo we're staying in is a little Noisy RF wise...but I was still able to log a few beacons before crashing out!!

RADIO USED is.......TECSUN PL-380 with Debock Frankensteiner 7.5 Inch Longwave External Loop
