Re: Russian Surplus 140mm x 8mm Ferrite Rod Prices on eBay

Gary DeBock

Hi Guy,

Thanks for this interesting question, which I'm sure that other DXers
have also wondered about.

The shortest Russian surplus ferrite rods that I have actually tried
are the 140mm x 8mm ones, obtained from both "Alexer1" and "Sovtube."
These have proven to be very effective in compact antennas like the 7"
diameter medium-wave "Affordable" FSL model (the one you took to Oregon
during your vacation). Based on the excellent performance of these
140mm x 8mm rods (and the 160mm x 8mm and 200mm x 10mm ferrite rods of
the same 400 permeability that have excelled in other FSL's) I have no
doubt that the Russian surplus 100mm and 65mm-long rods would also give
great performance, at a significant cost advantage. The shorter length
may make it difficult to get enough turns of Litz wire to make a
Longwave FSL design without using a variable capacitor of more than 381
pf capacitance, but for a medium wave FSL design, that should not be an
issue. As always, the important factors for good DXing performance will
be the accuracy of the cylindrical ferrite sleeve (all the ferrite rods
should be lined up, and pointing exactly the same way), the use of
high-quality Litz wire (660/46 is recommended), and the use of a
high-quality variable capacitor to take maximum advantage of the high-Q
tuning system. A/B testing here has also shown that the FSL's DXing
performance can be enhanced simply by placing the antenna up[ on a 5'
high PVC stand.

The eBay ferrite sellers usually price their rods according to the
purchasing demand, and the current "hot item" seems to be the 140mm x
8mm size. The 160mm x 8 mm size was also a hot item back in the
spring-- until Kevin and I apparently cleaned out the sellers of that
particular size. The 200mm x 10mm size was ordered in serious quantity
around May and June, but the sellers were not able to make a price
increase stick (presumably because of a huge supply of these rods,
owned by multiple sellers). The smaller sizes haven't really had much attention at all, so they would probably be a great option for
experimentation, Guy.

Hi Gary,

What do you think of the shorter rods as alternatives, such as the 65mm
or 100mm long versions? For the same general price you could get more
rods and make a larger diameter loop.

Which begs the question-- which is better: shorter ferrite rods with
bigger overall loop diameter, or longer ferrite rods but smaller loop

New Log- 1270-CJCB

John Cereghin <jcereghin@...>

Hi, everyone,

In my book, DX season starts today, so what better way to start it
than with a new UL log?

1270 CJCB Sydney NS, 1945-2000, country music, jingle call IDs. Weak
and in the mush on both the FRG-7 and the PL-310 barefoot. Gone by
2000. UL log 787.

My DX goals between now an March 31, 2012 would naturally be to get to
800 UL logs (13 stations to go) and 1000 stations in my overall log
(currently at 967).

Unfortunately, a serious line noise problem has cropped up here. I
have serious line buzz below 1000 khz, centered around 600-800 khz.
The buzz is not much of a problem above 1000 khz, but until I get this
solved, it's going to put a serious crimp in my DXing.

Don't forget to send me your ULR totals for the Ultralight Scoreboard.
I will probably be moving the scoreboard to my blog address in my
signature below shortly.

There are a few UK radios that, on paper, may well qualify as ULRs and which have LW coverage. The Roberts (Sangean) R9924, Sports 925 and Sports 994, and the "Steepletone Mw/Lw/Fm Sports Receiver Pocket Radio", were all spotted on Amazon.co.uk just now. They are all analog sets, so while one could fine tune them, knowing what frequency you are on could be a challenge. Also, I presume that they could be easily re-aligned to provide coverage at least into the 300+ kHz range for beacons.

The Roberts Sports 988 looks like a Sangean DT200 with LW, so digital but likely with 9 khz tuning steps and strictly limited to 153-279 khz.

Do any of you in the UK have any experience with these sets???

New Ferrite Sleeve Loop (FSL) antenna design now posted

Kevin Schanilec

Hi all:

In the "Ferrite Sleeve Loop Antennas" folder in the Files section here on the Group, I just posted a description of how I built a 12-inch dual-band FSL. It uses a "contra" wound coil that provides coverage of both LW and MW (149-1700 khz overall) with the flip of a switch, and also has a weather-tight enclosure. Alas, this is not a "budget" design, but may help others in determining how to design and construct their own FSL.

Hello To All,

We have added two more ultralight radios to our collection as of yesterday and put them to good use last evening. The SRF-M37W and Dianne's new Sangean DT-210V had a good workout as Dianne added 19 new ones to her overall list and a whopping 40 new ones to her Bristol's Hope log. She also added a new country to her overall list, Scotland as well.

This morning after an early rise once again , WMOB 1360 in Mobile,Alabama was logged which appears to be a new record distance in the ULR Longest Distance Reception World Barefoot @ 250 watts category as well the ULR Longest Distance Reception Western Hemisphere @ 250 watts category. I don't have very many NDB's within 100 miles that are still on the air.

You may be able to hear OGY on 414 in NYC, FO in Westhampton Beach on 400, and if it's still on, BBN-275 in Babylon.

All of the Tecsun Ultralight models were compared here for Longwave
performance, so there is some pretty accurate information about that. A

The best of the Tecsun DSP Ultralight models on Longwave is the PL-310,
which edges out the PL-606, which in turn edges out the PL-380. All of
these models are far superior on Longwave to the PL-360 model, whose
ridiculous midget loopstick should be labeled "for amusement only." To
put matters into perspective, however, even the PL-310's Longwave
sensitivity is nowhere near that of a Sony ICF-SW7600GR, and far worse
than that of the Sony ICF-2010. Without modification, none of the
Tecsun DSP models will receive anything but the very strongest LW
beacons or LWBC stations.

Hard To Get Foam For FSL Construction Projects

jerry_popiel

I hope to construct a small FSL and likely a future one, but I've had major problems trying to locate 2 Items re Steve's & Gary's Affordable FSL Designs, described in detail in the Photos Section. The hard to get items are:

1) Oatley 4 X 4 Inch Foam Closet spacer Foam is just not available anywhere in Canada. It is available at Home Depot USA / 60 to a Box, but NOT in Canada. I contacted Oatey Head Office in Brampton, Ontario today and even though this product is made in Canada its NOT available - only for the USA market? Go figure!! I was going to try small Bubble wrap available here at many Stores, but Steve Ratzlaff had informed me that Bubble Wrap is likely too uneven.

2) 3 Inch soft Foam Insulation - not available, biggest sizes available are 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch 3 foot tubes up to 1 inch in Diameter.

Any help in trying to locate these items OR paying postage to have them sent to me would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Kevin,

Great job on the Longwave TP's and NDB's received on your 12" FSL at
the park!

I was also listening this morning, and had some fun on both LW and MW
(with a couple of smaller FSL's, designed for tricky ocean beaches
where Murphy's Law is guaranteed to strike). Alaskan beacon 233-ALJ was
also coming in nicely here around 1230, with a trace of 234-R.Rossii
splatter http://www.mediafire.com/?rdg19auvyftc6ye . For TP-DX on AM I
had momentary audio from 747-JOIB and 1566-HLAZ this morning, but it
wasn't anything to shout about.

Great to hear about your success with the 12" FSL at the park, and
hope that you'll have a lot more fun with it this season.

73, Gary (in Puyallup)

Hi all:

Well, I finally wrested myself from slumber and got out for a good
sunrise DX session at the local park, the first of the season. The
noise near my home is quite terrible at times, especially on LW, so the
6 block trip to my favorite picnic bench is a necessity.

After fumbling in the dark and getting set up, things were actually
pretty good, at least on LW, with Radio Rossi coming in quite well with
its mix of western music and Russian male announcer. All are new here,
mostly because this was my first autumn session and they weren't coming
in last spring:

153 Russia 1208 //189 etc. this got a little better as the
morning progressed
180 Russia 1212 //189 etc. weak but able to parallel the programming
189 Russia 1210 pretty good
234 Russia 1208 //189 etc. pretty good
279 Russia 1207 // 189 etc. nice (at 1300, it was booming in,
with time pips and clear ID of "Radio Rossi")

Other highlights included:

233 ALJ This Alaska beacon was surprisingly strong, and knocked the
wax loose from my ears
353 LLD It was nice to hear this Hawaiian beacon, struggling under
uber-local 353-RNT, a testimony to the nulling of the FSL
972 Presumed South Korea with music at 1306: this didn't stick around
for more than a minute or two. Not heard here before, but will
probably be coming in better as the season progresses.

There were very weak hets on 594, 747 and 774 on my Sony 7600GR
spotter, all presumed Japanese, but not strong enough for any audio.

So, not a bad start to the season. The FSL weighs quite a bit, so my
upper body strength should improve as the weeks progress :-) I fitted
it with an extra fixed capacitor, so I can tune 150-1700 khz now.

Russian Surplus 140mm x 8mm Ferrite Rod Prices on eBay

Gary DeBock

Hello All,

Yikes! The Russian ferrite sellers on eBay may be reading the
Ultralightdx messages, including the post that I sent this morning
regarding the price of the 140mm x 8mm rods used in the 7" diameter
"Affordable" FSL antenna design. The shipped price of these rods from
"Alexer1" has practically doubled, compared to his asking price this
morning
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemRevisionDetails&_trksid=p4340.l2569&item=190570858315

The price of the same rods from "Sovtube" is still very reasonable,
though (at least at this moment). 70 of these rods (enough to build the
63 rod FSL) can be obtained from him for $104 (US Dollars) including
air mail shipping to North America, according to his current listing at
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Large-balun-ferrite-rods-8x140-mm-Lot-10-/400239422868?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d3020ed94

.

The supply and prices of these Russian surplus ferrite rods on eBay
have always been very unpredictable, and of course all of the sellers
try to make as many rubles of profit as possible (they seem to have
adapted to capitalism quite eagerly). My advice is to wait until you
see a listing of a very large number of ferrite rods (enough to build
your chosen FSL design) at a reasonable price, and then secure them all
in one single purchase. The sellers will probably try to raise the
asking price after your order, but they have been doing that anyway for
years.

Re: A New Antenna Lights Station this evening

ferrite61 <dxrx@...>

A 2nd Antenna Light heard this evening [8/31/2011] while at the picnic table in back yard. Under WELI 960 I can sometimes hear R.Reloj from Cuba, tonite instead were two faint and clear calls for WHYL at 20:15 EDT. Upon lookup, this appears to be after local sunset, so the entry is logged at 22 Watts from Carlisle, PA. Not a strong signal at all, weak, but there and intelligible. Seems OK.

960 WHYL Carlisle, PA 22 Watts at 385.6 km (17.53 km/W)
Station #506 Antenna Lights #30 Scoring #72 at 6584 points

Tuning around the dial tonite listening to ball games and dialed into 1250 briefly. Usually WMTR here playing oldies, and did hear it. After a few moments I got a clear and weak call during a pause for WLEM. Upon lookup WLEM is running 30 Watts at night from Emporium, PA. The distance is 442.25km. That works out to about 14.75 km/W and scores over 7000 points for the log. Nothing much else heard besides the Call Sign that was certain. Time of day was 20:38 EDT using the PL-210 on Alkalines due to Irene.

WLEM is station #503 and Antenna Lights #29, ranking as DX #65 of 80 by score.

Also heard tonite was WNBF 1290 b'cast minor-league baseball, and WCCW 1310 (presumed) as ESPN.
