Congratulations, Colin! This award is well deserved, as you've done
so much to pump enthusiasm into UL radio and DXing in general. It's
been fun to watch your dxer.ca Web site grow in popularity and
influence in the DXing community, too. It has become a "must visit"
site for many in the hobby.

Have fun filtering out that Hawaiian QRM with the hotrod E100 on your
trip next month!!

I look forward to visiting with you and Andrea again, perhaps next
time in beautiful Victoria.

Colin,

Sorry that I missed the actual unveiling of your First Anniversary Founder's Award last night. We had an actual non-radio-related social engagement last night!

Congratulations on your richly deserved award, Colin. Your generosity and support has been essential to both the initial growth and the current maturity of Ultralighting. We each owe you a great deal.

Somehow, I suspect that new, hot, Slider e100 will get a real workout on your eminent trip to Hawaii :>)

Colin's early suggestion of a formal review of the Sony SRF-59 Walkman radio in November of 2007 (and his offer to publish it on his outstanding web site, DXer.Ca) was absolutely instrumental in starting the Ultralight Radio group's formation.  His continual offer to publish equipment reviews, technical articles, contest communication and other essential Ultralight Radio information has contributed greatly to the explosive growth of the niche group, as well as elevating DXer.Ca into the status of one of the premier radio-related web sites   Colin's personal interest in reviewing various compact receivers has helped many potential purchasers, and his posting of diverse DX station audio recordings has helped all of us hear the sounds of exotic DX, regardless of the anemic performance of some of our pedestrian receivers.

Colin's personal interest in the Ultralight Radio movement has had the influential effect of making Canada a true stronghold of pocket radio DXing, leading to the outstanding achievements of Rob Ross of London, Ontario, Allen Willie of St. John's, Newfoundland, and Greg Schoom of Toronto, Ontario, among many others.  Those Canadians who received sample Ultralight radios (and alignments) can thank Colin for his early contributions to Ultralight radio, helping to start the movement that generated such international comradery.  Today the Canadian contribution to Ultralight Radio is extremely strong, and dominant in many outstanding aspects.

Lacking John Bryant's creative ability to design a beautiful Award Certificate and frame, I (Gary DeBock) have decided to award Colin with the next best thing:   A personally created, fully-modified Eton E100 model (Slider loopstick and Murata CFJ455K5 IF filter), deviously designed to outperform any portable on the planet in 9 kHz split DXing.  This latest innovation has the technical contributions of four fanatical Americans (John Bryant, Guy Atkins, Steve Ratzlaff and myself), to express our deep appreciation to Colin, and to all Canadians, for the outstanding contributions made by our northern neighbors to the booming Ultralight Radio DX movement.

Ultralight Radio Anniversary Award for Colin Newell

Hello Guys,

On the first anniversary of the Ultralight Radio boom, the perpetrators of this crazy new phenomena would like to award due recognition to one of our most influential co-conspirators.

Without the continual contributions of Colin Newell in encouraging, supporting and disseminating essential information and communication regarding all aspects of the Ultralight Radio movement, it is highly doubtful that the enthusiast group would ever have been formed, much less become the huge, extremely enthusiastic group that exists today.

I find the TERK with the SRF-59 and the DT200/DT400 works well; I don't find that combo head and shoulders more sensitive than a ICF-S5W barefoot...maybe a hair...the combo ULR/TERK has a little more difficulty in an urban/lots of locals environment than the S5W. That said, the combo has nice nulling. If you only get a partial null in one orientation, I find that I can sometimes get a great null 180 degrees away from the first attempt. With the Sangeans, I find that the TERK works with the loop resting parallel to my arm with my hand holding the radio with display facing me just beyond the loop. You will have the most noticeable results with daytime reception. Nighttime is a bit more subtle, but can be worthwhile as well.
Does anybody have experience with the Pocket KIWA loop?

Re: Eligible Stations

satya@...

Hey George:

I agree with Kirk - the Select-A-Tenna and Terk are essentially the same
antenna and their performance should be fairly indistinguishable. Radio
Intel found this to be true.
(see http://www.radiointel.com/review-2loop.htm ).

Any ULR will respond well to an air-core loop like the Terk, while it is
more unpredictable using a ferrite passive loop like the Quantum Stick.
Given the Terk's price, it's really hard to go wrong. The gain with the
DT-200 should be about equal to that of a slider e100 - I have found that
a Sony SRF-59 with a Terk loop is much more sensitive than even a
fully-aligned Sony S5W, the barefoot sensitivity king. If you are handy
with a soldering iron, retrofitting the DT-200's filter with something
more narrow would give you quite the rig.

Re Select-A-Tenna: I know that the Select-A-Tenna has a version that is
active as well, but at that price (200 bucks or so?) you may as well get a
Quantum Loop with a Quantum Coupler and have the steerability, variable Q
and variable gain controls.

Hope this helps - Kevin S

Hi George,

I've not had any experience with the DT-200, but lately I've been doing
some comparisons between the Terk and the Select-a-Tenna. Both loops
are really good, especially when used in conjunction with the Eton E-
100 slider. (Well, in a lot of cases anyway)
So far I can't tell any difference between the performance of those
two. I know this doesn't specifically answer your querry, so just take
it for whatever it's worth.

Ultralight loggings for Sun. Nov. 23, 2008. All stations logged from Toronto, ON. Dates and times in UTC.

Two more stations added to the ultralight log. Total ultralight count: 204.

630 WMAL DC Washington - 23-Nov-2008 0520 UTC - Talk. Three IDs heard. Sangean DT-400W. 5 kW. (Poor)

1140 WCJW NY Warsaw - 23-Nov-2008 1445 UTC - Christian country music show: "The Sunshine Show" - URL www.sunshineshow.net. No ID until 1530 UTC when show ended. ID as "CJ Country". Ads, including one for a restaurant in Batavia (NY) and one for KFC. Weather. Into another Christian show. Eton E-100. 2.5 kW daytime only. (Fair).
--> This station is semi-local for me, and would be an easy catch, except that it is daytime only and during the day 1140 is swamped by slop from CKOC on 1150. I was never able to separate it from CKOC on the Sony SRF-59, but the E-100 and the Sangean DT-400W both were able to handle it. I heard it on both radios, but actually logged it on the E-100.

Hi,

First, let me thank all of you who answered my newbie question (about
whether local stations count) last month and apologize for not
following up sooner.

I haven't had a chance to do any concentrated listening yet, only
grabbing 15 minutes here and there. I did log my locals, all 23 of
them. My total logged so far is 69, most with the DT-200VX but 15
were with the Mini 300 (all in late 2007).

A number of the locals (in New York City) are giving me headaches with
IBOC, some of them going 20 kHz off channel with strong QRM. The
DT-200 lets me do some nulling, but these 50,000 watt locals are still
murder. My goal is to log at least 100 bareback, and then I'm
thinking about buying a loop, maybe a Terk. Has anybody had any
experience pairing a Terk with a DT-200?

Good DXing,

George / W2GEK
