I would say anywhere between 800 - 1000KHz. You're right about the scale. I'm not complaining. I mean for £20 it's not gonna be vernier accurate.

I was just surprised at how sensitive this thing is.

Precisely the method I use. I have a Sangean DT200vx which I use for that purpose, as it was very disappointing in the selectivity department.

I bought a couple myself, after having read the reviews. It is an astounding little gem.
I might tinker with the second one :-
- direct or inductively couple a loop or longer ferrite (longwire via a buffer MOSFET or FET to
protect the chip!)
- use the SRF-59 at the top end of the AM band as an IF and AFsection with an external frontend for
LW or SW.
Just a thought...

When using the SRF-59 barefoot for uldx, I use another receiver to identify the frequency.

I was browsing through the http://www.dxer.ca/ website yesterday afternoon and came across rave
reviews of the Sony SRF-59 Walkman Radio, so I checked on the Internet and discovered that they were
freely available here in the UK. I set off to the local Comet store and found one at £20.
. . .
Now this is more like it. I was truly impressed with this little radio. It seemed as though it was
as sensitive and selective as my faithful G5.
. . . . .
Anyway, I've waffled plenty long enough. Suffice to say, if anybody is thinking of buying one of
these little radios, I can heartily recommend it. I mean come on. for a measly £20, you can't go
wrong. I am now trying to work out a way to increase the reception on AM with a long wire or
something, but I don't know if the headphone socket is connected to the ferrite bar or whether the
headphone socket aerial connection is solely for FM use.

Let me correct my prior post. I meant to say that there were none in WI on 900, and in fact none on 900 -- not that there weren't stations in Wisconsin airing his program.

Ed Schultz is aired on a number of stations, but it doesn't appear that there are any located in Wisconsin - but his show might originate there. I don't see any stations on 900 which air his program.

Since I also own an SRF-59, I know how hard it can be to determine precisely what frequency you were on from the tiny analog dial.

Do you have any other clues ?

I was browsing through the http://www.dxer.ca/ website yesterday afternoon and came across rave reviews of the Sony SRF-59 Walkman Radio, so I checked on the Internet and discovered that they were freely available here in the UK. I set off to the local Comet store and found one at £20. Got back home about 16:00 and decamped to the patio with a fresh cup of tea and with a sharp knife in hand attempted to carve open the plastic package with the aforementioned SRF-59 mutely staring me in the face like a cheap kid's toy. Could something that looked like a tacky 1970's fashion design reject really perform as well as they all said on the more knowledgeable websites?

OK, after a heart stopping moment or two when I almost lost a digit or two trying in vain to open the package with the knife, I fitted an AA cell and using the supplied earphones powered it up on FM. I was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality and sensitivity. Maybe a little too much high frequency, but that's no bad thing (if you've got it, you can always reduce it with a different pair of headphones, but if it's not there in the first place, then it's rather more difficult to put it there).

So then I tried the AM BCB and I have to say, I was mildly unimpressed. OK it wasn't bad, but equally, it wasn't as astounding as I had been lead to believe. It was a nice warm, sunny Friday afternoon and there was a lot of hash about and the noise floor was quite high, so I packed up and came indoors to watch the Snooker.

Fast forward three hours…It's 20:00 and following a late Sunday lunch with all the trimmings, glass of beer in hand, I set off outside to try the SRF-59 just before the sun goes down. This can often be a good time of day to pick up distant signals.

I started to tune through the AM BCB from top to bottom and wow! What a difference three hours makes. They all came tumbling in. France, Germany, Italy, Russia, The Middle East and so on. Now this is more like it. I was truly impressed with this little radio. It seemed as though it was as sensitive and selective as my faithful G5.

So finally I get to my question for the North Americans. I got to around 900 KHz and suddenly I heard someone called Ed Schultz who seemed to be coming from Wisconsin. It was called `The Ed Schultz Show' unsurprisingly. It appeared to be a satirical political show by the sound of it and there was lots of applause and laughter from an audience. Had I heard my first TA on this little radio? Do any of the North Americans among the membership know which frequency I heard this on and which radio station was hosting this show? I have searched the listings on the internet, but there are just so many broadcasters out there it was like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack. It may be affiliated to MSNBC.

Anyway, I've waffled plenty long enough. Suffice to say, if anybody is thinking of buying one of these little radios, I can heartily recommend it. Newfoundland Ultralight Radio Trans-Atlantics & Domestics Report April 22-23

Allen Willie

Hello to All,

Conditions last evening were once again decent despite the returning high static & noise levels . Spain and England dominated the split frequencies . 1 new station added during the evening and 1 new early this morning to the ULR log. It has been amazing to pull out all the low power stations on 1152 khz from England and Scotland lately. Scotland is country # 77 for Allen in the ULR totals.

Ultralight station #780 and number 959 in the overall log.

Nice log, since April has offered rather slim pickings DX-wise!

Hello To All,

Decent propagation last evening despite the high static and noise levels early on that dissipated later.

The first Trans-Atlantic signals appeared earlier than past nights and this session of Dxing became a marathon of sorts for most of the evening and an early morning rise also yielded more good DX.

After almost 3 weeks at this new location , the trend clearly seems to be, hardly any domestic stations are audible from the rest of North America until the wee or early morning hours. The band here from about 20:00UTC until then has been a countless supply of strong Trans-Atlantic signals , many at local sounding levels. Most evenings from St. John's the trend was TA's early on and then domestics taking over. Location Location as they say !

Another great list and a new station from Scotland. Not had that one from Scotland due to local English Tx.

Whilst on the Scottish transmissions, your comment on mediumwave.info was noted too.

Good Dx

WCGO 1590

Kirk

This evening for a while I glued myself to 1590 to attempt to ID some of the previously hrd UNID'd stations I mentioned a few ds ago. That freq sounds like a GY channel here most of the time during the night. Out of the blue, a sta I'd never even had a hint of before came up and popped in and out for the next 45 minutes. Tnx Richard Allen for the tip on this one a couple months ago. Logged on the T-615 w/ SAT.

WCGO, Evanston, IL, 0509 UTC, 4/20/11, hrd w/ Mid-Eastern mx and occasional brief anmts by M in presumed Assyrian lang. The mx, at times, sounded a lot like the Arabic "Call to Prayer" or recitation of the Holy Koran except w/ instrumental accompaniment. Up and down with a lot of UNID stations plus relogs of WZRX (Jackson, MI), (KPRT, KS City, MO), and WAIK (Galesburg, IL). ULR Sta #745.

We're having yo-yo wx again here in Oklahoma. The temp keeps going way UP and then way DOWN...we never know what to expect just lately.

Re: Large-Scale FSL Experimentation Tripped Up by Soviet Surplus Scammers on eBay

I think the Q value of 180 for the Ferropribor rod does not mean a lot - as long as we don't know anything about the coil which they used for testing and measuring.

I have found an interesting article about optimizing the performance/ferrite volume ratio:
H. Blok & J. J. Rietveld, Induktive Antennen in modernen Rundfunkempfängern, in: Philips Technische Rundschau, 16. Jahrgang Nr. 6, Dez. 1954, Seiten 149-163.
Amongst other things, the authors write about stacking ferrite rods with distributed inductivities (I have posted the picture "Ferrit_Stockung.jpg" to the files area). The distance between the rods should be far enough that no coil has magnetic influence on the next one (e.g. 10 cm). For a given value of L every coil must have the inductivity of L/p. As a secondary effect, this will make it easier to keep the distributed capacitance of L small. The authors claim that H_eff in this case is proportional to the square root of the ferrite volume wehereas it is proportional to the fourth root if one (bigger) rod is used. (Hopefully, my poor English is comprehensible. Otherwise I would post the paragraph in German and ask someone to translate it.)

The proven quality and specification of ferrite rods is evidently a crucial issue,

Also, I did receive a large quantity of 100x20x3 "Russian Ferrite" bars from a East European Ebayer.
So far I've had little time to test, initial results were not favorable, perhaps I got some cheap
Ferrite substitute?

Hello To All,

Propagation was decent last evening ,however the noise and static factor was evident as the Solar Index number indicated such. Signals on the band were predominately from 900-1700 khz and anything below 900 was subdued substantially.
A few stations already in the ULR log but not heard at this location thus far, made appearances also for the first time. 1 new station was added to the ULR log .

I'm interested in your results with your WRX-911. I have the cobalt blue model, but haven't really done a lot of DX'ing with it.
