Hi Tony,

I have an English PDF Manual for the Tecsun PL-210 model, but the
originator has asked that it not be posted it on the Internet. Any
interested Ultralightdx members can receive it from me
privately, however. Your PL-210 manual will be emailed directly,
and I hope it will be useful for you.

Hello,

Received in today's mail a Tecsun Pl-210. The accompanying manual is in
Chinese. Does anyone know if there is an English manual online that I
can download? I searched the files for this group and did not see one
listed. Thank you.

Great results from your new location.

I'm impressed with the 3 Libyan catches. This is a country I still have to catch on 'ultralight' !

Infact the BBC 5 signal on 909KHz leaves a lot to be desired even at my location, with skywave echoes making it very poor at night.

Is this the 'easiest' N. African then ?

I didn't think that it would be that strong in the USA, but then again, you wouldn't have 200Kw of Germany that I usually have pounding in !

What are 550 stations WDEV, YVKE, putting out ?

Newfoundland Ultralight Radio Trans-Atlantics & Domestics Report April 7-8

Allen Willie

Hello To All,

Trans-Atlantic signals continue to abound at our new QTH . Last evening high static noise levels due only to a high Solar A Index prevailed early on and then settled down for the remainder of the night.

A few newly heard stations here were added to this location's list different from the previous nights.

There is a point of land and road that juts out a good distance from beyond our residence so perhaps on the weekend a venture may be in store for an even more remote DXing experience.

Hello all,

I have established why purchase prices of Chinese radios seem higher in China than on ebay. In China purchases attact sales tax. In Hong Kong there is no sales tax, hence the e.bay sellers are selling at a "tax free" price from Hong Kong.

Chinese radios made in Shenzhen are actually cheaper in Hong Kong than in Shenzhen! I am now in Shenzhen- I should have gone electronics shopping in Hong Kong! (Local people here in Shenzhen go shopping for electronics in neighbouring Hong Kong)

I can't comment about the PL-660 specifically, since I don't own one. I can tell you that on my PL-380 the section of the whip antenna below the pivot point does not appear to pull out from the top of the case. The best I can do with the radio on its flip stand is to get the antenna about 20 degrees from vertical.

Very same thing with my PL-390 and, more surprising,

So, I received a PL-660 yesterday. I'm reasonably impressed but I have a question about the antenna.

On my other portable radios with whip antennas, one can pull the antenna straight out from the case for about 3/8" inch, and this allows it to pivot with more freedom than otherwise. The Tecsun does not seem to allow this. The result is that you can't set the antenna anywhere close to vertical if the radio is sitting flat on its back. You can't even get it vertical if the radio is sitting on its flimsy little fold-out stand.

Is this normal for these Tecsuns, or do I just need to pull the antenna harder? :)

An update for 1400 kHz...
This morning at 0405EDT I caught an ID for the ESPN station as WSLB. WSLB is located in Ogdensburg, NY broadcasting with 1000 Watts at a distance of 415km. This is station #498.

Two more new statioon ID's this AM before Sunrise. I missed the 0500 EDT ToH, but caught these at BoH near 0530 EDT.

First was a nice call of a local WILI Willimantic, CT that has evaded the ULR-DX log for 5 years (but was on the homebrew log since 2004). All I got was an ID no real programming ideas given the crowded channel. WILI has 1000 Watt power located 66 km to the East. Time was 0525 EDT using the PL-210.

The seconnd log is a known "Christian" programming heard here often recently that revealed itself as WBFN this morning at 0528 EDT. They went into a non-network news update. WBFN is located in Battle Creek, MI with a 1000 Watt liscense at a distance of 1020 km.

Still not finished yet on 1400... there's at least an ESPN sports station I've regularly heard, and either a classic 70's R&B station or Motown format.

Station count now at 494.

Allen, it sounds as though your new QTH is working out very well. Sort of a "DXpedition at home" site like that of Martin Hall in Clashmore (coastal northern Scotland) and Patrick Martin in Seaside, Oregon (and the late Richard Wood near Hilo, Hawaii).

Several of us in eastern Massachusetts are getting many of these TA signals but most require a Perseus rather than an ultralight!

My wife comes very a very thrifty family in Hong Kong, and when I told
her that I could use a few bargain Tecsun PL-380's, she sent out her
relatives to track down the best PL-380 deals in Hong Kong. Her
brother-in-law scoured the stores, and eventually was able to find
brand new PL-380 models selling at a discount shop for about $35 US. He
bought three of them, and brought them to us during his spring vacation
last year (and are now being used by Patrick, Rob and Steve). The going
rate at the Hong Kong department stores was about $45 US, though.

My impression is that most of the Hong Kong eBay sellers try to make
their biggest profits on the shipping charges, not on the radio prices.

Hi Vince:

Thanks for the info on the domestic Chinese market, where it sounds
like the PL-310 and others are going for $50-60 (over 300 Yuan) or so
in Beijing. I guess in-city prices are like that: I was in New York
City recently, and the prices for radios at electronics outlets were
also much higher than from domestic mail order sources. Given the
relative per-capita income levels of the US and China, a radio such as
this is likely a more significant purchase.

It looks like the PL-310 can be had for about 200 Yuan on Taobao (about
$30) including domestic shipping to a Chinese address, although you
don't get to see it first: do Taobao sellers also sell seconds and
knock-offs?

Hi Kevin,
> I'm currently living in Beijing, China. My experience with
consumer electronics in general and ultralights in particular, is that
you are still paying less on ebay - in some cases even after postage is
added, than buying the same item in the chinese domestic market.

Prices are generally lower, if you have good bargaining skills, in
the many markets around town, but there is a chance that you are buying
"knock-offs" or "seconds".

The other surprise for me was that, ultralights in this case, are
not as easy to find as I expected.

I saw the PL-310 and PL-606 in only one place so far. The price
was higher than ebay plus postage. The PL-600 in two places with the
price higher than ebay before postage.
>
The only deals, so to speak, were the R-911 for $10 and the R-9012
for $13. Not too impressed with the R-911, but still worth every penny.
If one can afford the additional 30% :^) for the R-9012, you get a
radio than run circles around the R-911.

The above comparisons are based on US/Canada prices. I don't know
if they apply to other countries.

Newfoundland Ultralight Radio Trans-Atlantics & Domestics Repoort April 6-7

Allen Willie

Hello To All,

We are continuing to enjoy our new location and the Dxing has been providing very entertaining evenings. The RFI here is next to nil obviously compared to back in St. John's and the powerhouse stations of the city are nulled enough to allow signals on the European and African split frequencies nearby to dominate.
Most of the distant domestics have been audible more so in the early mornng hours and very few audible so far in the evenings as the Trans-Atlantics have dominated with amazing strength.
