First Session with the Slider E-100
Kirk Allen <kirk74601@...>
First of all, CONGRATS to my neighbor to the south, Richard Allen,
for his second ULR TP station!! Last night I was able to sit down with the Slider E-100 for my first serious attempt at using it for some ULR DX. I'm not used to it yet, but it shows a lot of promise, ha ha. I did log 3 new stations for the ULR log as follows: 610, WTVN, Columbus, OH, 0432+, 11/11, very poor under hvy QRM from KCSP, Kansas City plus a few others. Very luckily hrd an ID sneak through the mess at 0440. I can't even tell you what their pgm'g consisted of, but I think it was all talk, much like all the other stations I was hearing on this freq at the time. Hvy QRM from KCSP, KS City. 1540, KGBC, Galveston, TX, listened on and off from 0540-0810 UTC, 11/11, many stations up and down here, several w/ SP pgm'g. One I think was an XE, one was KZMP, University Park, TX w/ SP pgms, so this one was a trick to pull out of all the SP lang pgm'g. KGBC also was carrying pgm'g in SP w/ some rel songs in SP and ranchera mx thrown in too. Finally an EG/SP ID clearly copied at 0800 after numerous attempts. Topaz has this one listed as Silent, but that's definitely not the case. They also have their night power listed as 250 watts. 1550, XENU, Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, 0850-1005, 11/11, featured ranchera mx all sounding pretty much like the same song. Finally a copiable ID hrd at 1000 UTC. Fair at best. Geesh, this was my night to camp out on a few freqs. At least I could get IDs on a few of them. Cheers, Kirk Allen Ponca City, OK

Re: Problem Child Frequencies

I have problem child frequencies all right. A little over one mile
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
from here I have three stations using the same tower, which is quite rare. Fortunately none is more than 1 KW and all are non-directional. Those frequencies are 1290, 1340 and 1490. The tower is owned by KIST-1490, known from 1926 until 1990 as KDB (and from 1997 until October 28, 2008 as KBKO). I have a fairly strong regional on 1450 (KVEN) that I can null a little bit and a not quite as local but still local on 1250 (KZER) that I can kinda sorta but not exactly null so that takes care of 1240. So what do I have for graveyard frequencies? 1230 and 1400. However at night the closest station on 1400 (KKZZ; about 30 miles away) ever so slightly hovers above the jumble. So I have one out of six graveyarders; 1230. The only good thing about this is that it's interesting to see how well my radios handle those three extremely close stations. They're a pretty good test of dynamic range, selectivity, and nullability (is that a word?; if it wasn't it is now). The worst is a Superadio III I bought about five years ago.

Current Firsts and Records
John H. Bryant <bjohnorcas@...>
I've completed updating the Master Firsts and Records List and have uploaded a PDF version to the Files area of dxer.ca. There have been a few new distance records established by Allen Willie and Paul Logan; Allen Willie continues to find MW countries that he has yet t log on his trusty M37V and has added Balearic Islands and the Czech Republic this time. Thankfully, Kirk Allen of Oklahoma also added a fine Unlimited Graveyard Channel record to the list, as well.
Someone made a comment sometime ago, kind of questioning the validity of these loggings as "world records." I think maybe who ever that was has missed the point. There may have been farther distances heard with small radios, somewhere, some time, by somebody. BUT, the ULTRALIGHT Records and Firsts list is the ONLY list in the world of its type and records the high-water marks of achievement of the Ultralight community. No more, no less..... so, these truly are "World" or "Western Hemisphere" records. I don't think that very many of us look at these things as records of competitiveness, either. I'll wager that Allen Willie would acknowledge that without the support of this community, he would never have set off on his Trans-Atlantic odyssey... the same thing is certainly true where my name appears on that list.... it is truly a record of achievement BY THE ULTRALIGHT COMMUNITY. Along those lines, we have had a number of 30-Day Ross Challenges and 300 or 400 stations heard achievements lately, with awards given, etc. I want to start formally celebrating those achievements by announcing the awards issued as they happen. I'll begin that effort and catch up on the 175 or so awards issued so far when I get back to Oklahoma in early December. Lastly, our Western Hemisphere Records are really languishing.... with the Follies, the awards and all of the good general DXing that is happening, we just HAVE to have moved the distance records just a bit as a group... I hope that each of you will look carefully at the attached Current Records and look through your recent loggings. To submit a new record, all you have to do is send me an e-mail, titled so that I'll know its a record submittal... give me the distance (km/miles) and the particulars of the logging...... PLEASE! As the Holiday Season approaches, I imagine that each of us will find a bit more time to DX.... good luck!!! John B.

Second TP heard in Oklahoma
bbwrwy
This morning I heard JOIB 774, Sapporo, using a SRF-T615 coupled with
a Quantum QX Loop V.2+. At 1107 UTC I heard a woman speaking in Japanese. Signal faded under WSB 750 and KRMG 740 QRM at 1109. Then I heard a man speaking in Japanese briefly at 1118 UTC. It took a very light touch on the tuning and QX (Q-multiplier) controls of the Quantum Loop to separate JOIB away from WSB and KRMG. I tried to hear the station with the T615 barefoot, but only heard the QRM. Because near-by pest KSPI 780 was already on the air at 1100 UTC, I didn't try to hear JOUB 774. KSPI had to be operating at full daytime power. Unbelievably, there are spring-like thunderstorms overhead now. The weather seems to get stranger each day. Good wishes for everyone for your best DX week ever. Richard Allen 36°22'51"N / 97°26'35"W (near Perry OK)

Here in central Delaware, 1210 is my worst- blocked by

WPHT-Philadelphia, which is very difficult to null. 1220 is no better- I only have two stations logged on 1220. 1090 is tough with WBAL in Baltimore but I do have two other stations logged. 1080 is also a dry frequency for me. 1550 is my best frequency, with 12 stations logged. Problem Child Frequencies
Kirk Allen <kirk74601@...>
Hi Everyone,
I'm sure most of us have our own "problem children" as far as specific MW frequencies go. You know, those stubborn channels that just don't want to give up many loggings at all due to any number of factors. Lcl splatter, overcrowded freqs, noise from cable TV boxes and computers, et al. One of the worse ones for me is 1580 khz. We have a semi-local that bdcsts on 1580 from Blackwell, OK, apx. 20 miles west of here. Tonight KOKB was off the air as well as last night. I've tried to log other stations on that freq for literally hours and never had any luck until tonight. I managed to catch a Radio Disney station that held in long enough to get a handle on who it was: 1580, KMIK, Tempe, AZ, 0455-0515 UTC, 11/10, Radio Disney pgm'g. Quick ID 0500 and back to Disney. 50 kw, but you couldn't prove that in the reception here. Poor. One other new one here: 1350, KDZA, Pueblo, CO, 0809-0830+ UTC, 11/10, Playing my kind of mx- oldies R&R from the 70's. Another reason I enjoyed listening to this one was because they had their OWN lcl pgm'g, not another boring generic network feed. 280 watts night pwr listed. Reception much better than the 50 kw AZ station on 1580. Topaz has KDZA's format listed as sports. Not the case at least during my reception. Fair. Hope you all have a good week and can find some time to twist the dials. 73, Kirk Allen Ponca City, OK

Test Message for Gary DeBock
John H. Bryant <bjohnorcas@...>
Gary,
You should have just been notified that "the moderator of ultralightdx" just added you to the group mailing list. I was messing around in the site machinery and your membership, along with that of a long-dormant member who I was trying to eliminate, was deleted. I've just plugged you back in, hence the dumb announcement from yahoo that you just received. I think that everything is all OK now, though you may have to reset your mail preference (Individual e-mails.) I'll send this directly to you as well as through ultralightdx. If you don't get the one through ultralightdx in ten minutes or so after the direct one, please message me and I'll try to sort it out. Sorry for the bother. John B.

New UL Stations Last Night- #402 and 403
John Cereghin <jcereghin@...>
After hitting my 400th UL station a few days ago, the natural
questions is where to look for additional stations. Besides TAs, gravedigging is the next best thing. I only had 12 graveyard stations in the UL log so I sat on 1230 last night and got two new ones: WFVA Fredericksburg VA. A new UL station but a relog overall. #402 WJOI, Norfolk VA, "America's Greatest Music, WJOI, Norfolk". A new UL station and a new one overall as well. #403 and #756 overall. Both on the E100 barefoot. John Cereghin Smyrna DE

Slider E100 Ultralight- A Daytime DX Dream
Hello Guys,
John Bryant and I continue to be amazed at
the DXing performance of our latest fanatical creation-- the "fully
modified" Eton E100 Ultralight, with a 7.5" Sliding Coil ("Slider") loopstick
and the Murata CFJ455K5 narrow IF filter (suggested by Guy Atkins). This
hot-rodded Ultralight has DX performance WAY out of proportion to its
size.
In noontime daytime DX testing for an upcoming
E100 Four Variant Shootout article, the fully modified Slider E100 was able
to solidly receive the following:
KXLX-700 (Airway Heights, WA) in the null of KIRO-710 ( 210
miles)
KTBI-810 (Ephrata, WA) in the null of KGNW-820 (130 miles)
KPAM-860 (Troutdale, OR) in the null of IBOC slopper KHHO-850 (125
miles)
KALE-960 (Richland, WA) in the null of KJR-950 (175 miles)
KFXX-1080 (Portland, OR) in the null of KPTK-1090 (125 miles)
KAST-1370 (Astoria, OR) in the null of KKMO-1360 (110 miles)
KUTI-1460 (Yakima, WA) in the null of KSUH-1450 (100 miles)
The combination of extreme sensitivity,
selectivity and nulling ability makes this compact modified E100 a real
DXing wildcat! By comparison, none of the traditional stock portables
here (E1, ICF-2010 or ICF-S5W) were able to make any of these catches,
due either to inadequate sensitivity, selectivity or nulling ability.
A full 7-page article describing the Slider
loopstick was recently uploaded to DXer.Ca., and the E100 Four Variant Shootout
article should be completed shortly. Already in TP DXing since summer,
this little monster has received 70 TP's (here in Puyallup, and
at Grayland). John and I are grinning from ear to ear :>)
73, Gary
