Re: Great DXing toy

For you Canadian DXers....   you can avoid the unbelievable high shipping charges ordering through Koss
by purchasing from J&R (I believe I found them thru eBay whilst looking for the recommended equalizer).
Only $5.95 to Toronto.
Cheers,

Subject: [ultralightdx] Great DXing toy

With gift giving season coming up fast, I'd like to recommend a DXing
tool I've used for about 10 years and didn't even realize it was still
being made. The Koss EQ 50 stereo amplifier and 3 band equalizer is
perfect to add to a ULR DXing kit. Visit the Koss website:

http://www.koss.com/koss/kossweb.nsf/p?openform&pc^ac^EQ50^Y

This little gadget runs off of 2 AAA batteries almost forever. Koss
says 30 hour battery life but I think that is quite conservative. The EQ
50 is a real help in filtering out hets and other garbage while trying
to pull out that weak signal. It's also a big help in adjusting audio
when it seems these radios with "up/down" audio controls never seem to
be either too loud or too soft. If you're like me with hearing
problems, this is a must have item to tailor the audio to your ears.

For $20 you can't go wrong. I never see these in any of the big box
stores locally and I ordered mine years ago on-line. Several Amazon and
ebay sellers have them so there is no shortage.

The morning wasn't a trouble loss however. I heard WTMJ 620, Milwaukee WI, for the first time. It faded in briefly over KTAR at 1255-1257. The frequency is usually a mix of CKRM, KMKI, KTAR, and XEBU during the pre-sunrise period. One is never sure which one will dominate. Radio Disney, KMKI, is audible here throughout the day via ground wave (358 km).

Except for when I listened for TP's, my receiver was the PL-360 with Gary's 7.5" loopstick. It's an excellent combo for DX.

Have a good day.

Richard,
Congrats on hearing WTMJ. That one's not been hrd here before, so I really appreciate the tip. Hope you enjoy the OU/OSU Bedlam game tonight! I'm taking one of the Eton E-100's with me to work so we cvan at least hear the game!

Allen:

I always enjoy reading your reports. It's amazing what you hear on the tiny M37V.

I sometimes listen to Blackhawk games on WGN and it would be nice to hear Greenland instead of the usual QRM from Mexico.

Good DX.

Oklahoma DX 11-27-10.

Another lackluster morning for reception of TP signals. Only weak carriers (hets) heard on 702, 774 and 828 kHz around local sunrise (1319 UTC) using the PL-310 + 7.5" ferrite rod.

I also checked for signals from Australia but they weren't there. But I was able to hear weak signals from Alice Springs 2310 and Tennant Creek 2325, around 1330, using the PL-360 & whip.

The morning wasn't a trouble loss however. I heard WTMJ 620, Milwaukee WI, for the first time. It faded in briefly over KTAR at 1255-1257. It'd be great fun to get up your way for a DXpedition one of these years! I

Hi Kirk,

Thanks and we really enjoy reading and following your reports on what you are hearing from your way as well.

Because Newfoundland is off from the mainland of Canada, many people who visit here for the first time are extremely impressed with the hospitality, scenery and climate.

We always mention that Newfoundland is Canada's best kept secret.

As you are aware the DXing here is fabulous as well and our door is always open any time you are up this way.

1360 WMOB running daytime power now?

Blake

Every night here in South Carolina, this Christian station comes booming in. Supposed to be only 200 watts at night but I would bet they are running 5000watts instead.

A few more of my DXing tonight around 0200utc

1440 WGMI Bremen, GA (208 miles) with just an ID heard over the 3 or 4 stations doing battle here. Later heard an advert saying "he's the professional DJ" "She's the professional DJ" listen to 1440 WGMI

1330 WYRD Greenville, SC (82 miles). This station a simulcast of 950 WORD. Talk show.

1270 WLIK Newport, TN (259miles) Oldies 1270, followed by CNN news at the bottom of the hour, then Smoky Mountain weather.

1210 WPHT Philadelphia PA (545miles) Philadelphia blow torch radio with George Noorey

1160 UNKNOWN but I suspect WMET out of Gaithersburg, MD local ads and then the beginning of the "Big Biz Show" before fading out.

570 CUBA TIME SIGNAL with spanish underneath and then the RR in morse code once a minute

1060 WKY Philadelphia PA (545miles) heard their jingle "KYW, news radio, 1060"

1500 WFED Washington DC (424miles) federal issues show. However, a foreign language station is dominating this freq at times.

650 WSM Nashville, TN (337 miles) This 50kw blowtorch is playing country music, as they always do. I think they are the only clear channel station in the US who does this. 740 The Zoomer out of Canada also plays a music format.

New UL Log Tonight- WCJW 1140 Warsaw NY

John Cereghin <jcereghin@...>

Got another new station for the UL log tonight on the PL-310 barefoot:

1140 WCJW Warsaw NY, 1715-1725, classic country music, lots of ads for
business in Batavia and "McDonalds of Warsaw", weather forecast for
Wyoming County (expecting a foot of snow-lake effect). No ID but
everything else matches.

UL station 748.

Greetings, Kirk!

Thanks again for the XE target stations!

I've heard another station under XEACH before - maybe it was XEQRV!
Definitely warrants
another listen!
Hi Steve,

Another one you might want to keep an ear open for is XEANT, Tancanhuitz de los Santos in the state of San Luis Potosi. I hrd them only once while in Pasadena, TX. They were speaking in one of the lcl Indian languages, possibly the listed Nahuatl language along w/ some SS as well. They ID'd as "La Voz de los Huastecas" and also gave several call ltr IDs in SS. I'd sure like to hear them up here...maybe some day!
Another XE that occasionally makes the trip this far north is XEREV, Los Moches, Sinaloa. Perhaps you've hrd them? The few times I've logged them here and in TX they were identifying as "Los Quarenta Principales". However, that station is known for frequent variations on their IDs, so....last time I hrd them, they were // online streaming audio at http://www.promored.com.mx/

Good luck with that freq. I remember what a mess there is to deal with in that area of the band in and around Houston...I can't say I miss anything about Houston, no offense meant!
