KTRB San Francisco
Mark Roberts
KTRB, 860 kHz, 50 kW, DA-N, which was moved to San Francisco from
Modesto, CA a few years ago, has temporarily ceased full-time operations. Earlier this year, it moved its daytime site to use one of the towers of KFAX. I noticed this afternoon at 5 pm, current local sunset, that KTRB signed off and said it would resume in the morning at 6:45. A couple of months ago, the station went into receivership. The "original" site, SE of Livermore, was so remote that electric power could not be brought to the site. The station instead ran on generators. The FCC granted an STA to KTRB on October 15 allowing it to run at reduced power at night. The station's CE explained to the FCC that the original two generators had worn out. A rental generator had been procured, but it could only run the transmitter at 20 kW. While the FCC granted that STA, it now appears that the station ceased nighttime operation altogether. There is another STA application, dated November 3, not yet granted, with this explanation: "The receiver of station KTRB is in the process of attempting to sell the station or to find an acceptable time broker to provide programming for the station. During such efforts, insufficient funds are available to operate the station on an unlimited basis, as authorized by the KTRB license. As a result, the receiver hereby seeks authorization to cease night time operation on the station until such time as a programmer or an agreement to purchase the station is finalized. The station ceased operating during nighttime hours with night time facility on October 15, 2010. The station signs off in the evening and on in the morning at times consistent with the average sunrise and sunset times established in its license. The receiver intends to return the station to night time operation as soon as programming arrangements can be effectuated. The receiver calls to the FCC's intention [sic] that the station currently airs certain football games. To the extent that such games continue beyond the time that the station would ordinarily switch to night time operation (and now sign off), the station will switch to its night time operating parameters and continue to operate until the end of the football broadcast and then cease operation for the night." While the STA has not been granted, clearly the station is (mostly) not operating at night. The football games mentioned are Oakland Raiders NFL games; there wasn't one this week. It may be a DX opportunity if, in the apparent chaos, KTRB were to happen to not go to its DA site at night, at least when there's a Raiders game on. It's hard to say when this situation will be cleared up....

Re: Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 11-14
pianoplayer88key
Hi... you had a much better session than me. I could hardly make out anything through much 50/00 desense, being only 1/3mi SE of 23kW 1300-KAZN and 50kW 1430-KMRB this AM. I started checking around 1420 (slept through my 1300 alarm) and gave up around 1500 or shortly thereafter.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
I made recordings of a few frequencies, but am not ready to upload them yet. I thought I could hear traces of audio through the 41/00 on 1593, 45/00 on 1566 (but I suspect it was after HLAZ's antenna change), 50/00 on 1476 (to try to check for that unID), 50/00 on 1404, 50/00 on 1377, 49/00 on 1368 (with a 2k het), and 45/00 on 1242 (with 2k het), but the audio if any was buried deep in the desense, and I never could even tell what type of program was on. I definitely did hear audio on 1161 reading 49/00, but had difficulty reading it, in part to being under the desense, and using 1kHz mode. That one probably could have been 1160-XEQIN. Also I heard hets on 1458, 1359, 1341, 1269, and 1251. However, every several seconds or so they would step up or down anywhere from about 50 cents to a couple semitones approximately, so I wonder if they aren't true hets at all, but are related to the extreme desense from being so close to a local pest. In fact, 1430-KMRB was overloading the PL-380 to the point of audio distortion on the channel when the Select-A-Tenna was tuned there, and even without it, I was getting 50/00 desense from around 1220 (there was also the aforementioned 1300) to 1550 or so, possibly wider, and 49/00 (barefoot) from around 970 to 1710, also contributed to by 50kW IBOC 1110-KDIS about 4 1/2 mi away. I wonder if I should have checked the low end of the band instead? Or are there any tips for getting TPs through all the clutter in L.A. when I visit my grandma (who lives near the aforementioned pests)? It does seem the 50kW 1/3 mi to the northwest is making TP DX a bit difficult.

Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 11-14
Hello All,
Asian TP signals dropped off
significantly here this morning (compared to yesterday), in agreement with
the lackluster results reported by Richard and Nigel. Here on the west
coast a few "big gun" TP's managed fair to good audio, however, as it was
"survival of the fittest" in a typically mediocre late-season session.
"Big gun" signals on 594, 648, 657, 747, 774, 828,
972 and 1134 were up and down in strength from 1400-1515, but "sunrise
enhancement" didn't really enhance anything. The second-tier TP's tended to stay
down in the noise, and Asian propagation wrapped up early around 1515 this
morning. 657-Pyongyang's infamous transmitter continues to muffle the
high audio frequencies, thankfully silencing most of the loud Korean
tirades and 1948-vintage music. Unfortunately the same noxious NK
programming has now shown up on 648-VOR's Korean program (after 1500) for
two days in a row, providing DXers the dubious chance to hear the rude
shouting and obsolete music in rare high fidelity.
The following were heard on a C.Crane SWP Slider
model (7.5" loopstick) inductively coupled to a 9' sided PVC-frame tuned passive
loop (in the rainy back yard). A modified ICF-2010 (30" loopstick) was used as
an SSB spotting receiver:

KDIS
David Alpert
As Stephen noted a couple days ago, KDIS-1110 was off the air for a few hours Friday. I've received this email from the station's CE:
"I had the station off from 1030pm to 300am Thu night/Fri morning. We are installing a much-needed 2nd harmonic/notch filter to keep KTNQ 1020 out of our transmitters and spewing out a mix on 1200kc. This has always been there, but it took my expertise in Spanish to identify exactly WHO it was. (My predecessors seemed to think it was a "distant Mexican station on 1200kHz that was mixing with our 2nd harmonic frequency. I guess they forgot 1200 is a clear channel for WOAI/San Antonio and it's unlikely anyone should be on that frequency out of Mexico, or most anywhere else for that matter!) We will have some more down time next week, but I'm at the mercy of our consultants' schedule. As soon as I know something I'll let you know!

Michael Evans - Mike MBR <michaelrae65@...>
There are two reason why I would not buy the new Tecsun PL-660 for one it has not got the OIRT band 63-74 MHz plus no RDS on VHF FM 87.50-108 MHz so no PI codes to identify that weak station.
Some may say, buy it for BCB MW only, and I say, sure go ahead if you want to waste £43.00 {$s !!} to my mind it's a incomplete radio, as is on others coverage wise, and why do I need the OIRT band, well the former USSR is still on this band and I do get them well during a "Lift" Mike - UK.

Newfoundland Ultralight Domestics Report Nov 13-14
Allen Willie
Hello To All,
An interesting Saturday evening to say the least, with the likes of certain stations audible throughout the early evening which are normally early morning visitors, one could feel "something in or rather on the air" was about to occur. First sign of this was WYLL in Chicago and also CKPC in Brantford,Ontario in for most of the listening event, normally as mentioned, early morning arrivals. Things heated up DX wise when it was discovered KWKH in Shreveport,Louisiana was audible and even at times dominating over the well heard WBBR. Also in the mix of what could be deemed a rare DX gathering here in the North Atlantic, was the logging of WHBY 1150 in Kimberley,Wisconsin, not often heard here. The peak of the evening was hearing KNX in Los Angeles on 1070 once again with decent audio all by itself for the most part. It too has only been logged by yours truly at this location a few times. 700 – WLW-Cincinnati, Oh 4:37UT/14 Talk show, biological talk 1070 – KNX-Los Angeles,Cal 4:04UT/14 CBS News,Weather,Traffic, mention of Santa Monica 58 Degrees , KNX ID 1100-WTAM-Cleveland,OH 00:28UT/14 Ice Cream Ad,Legal ID 1130-KWKH-Shreveport,Louisiana 00:38 – 2:11 UT at least /14 play by play of LSU Football game, country music after (Streaming//) and tips from other DXer's Thanks !! ***NEW ONE*** 1150-WHBY-Kimberley,Wisc 00:30 UT/14 "For Breaking News 1150 WHBY" ID 1160-WYLL-Chicago,Illinois 23:50 UT/14 Legal ID, promos 1380-CKPC-Brantford,Ont 00:23 UT/14 Kenny Rogers-The Gambler, 1380 News Country CKPC ID (signal was in for most of the evening) Receiver: SRF-M37V barefoot Good DX Allen Willie St. John's,Newfoundland

Re: recordings of KNX 1070
pianoplayer88key
Hehe I figured it wasn't quite as strong. ;) I have yet to log 590-VOCM at home, and being 7.7 miles east of 5kW IBOC 600-KOGO makes it even more difficult. Maybe the new PL-606 can do it, or would a 9' PVC loop have the selectivity to notch out KOGO and its IBOC, yet be able to tune to, say, 591 or 592 and hear VOCM in 1 kHz or 2 kHz mode on the PL-380 (or PL-606)?

Also, IIRC, one of those recordings has the KNX traffic sounder in it, which I think could be used as an aid in identification for DX reception. (Don't know that my near-S7 signal in the middle of the day would qualify as "DX":).)

RE: How's the signal? Is it moderately strong like this? Or is it only a fairly good signal like this one? BTW that's how strong KNX is received during the day on my PL-380 at home from 111 miles away. First recording is outside with a Select-A-Tenna, second recording is in the
house barefoot.
Hi Stephen,
The KNX signal when in, was all by itself alone on the frequency but when the fading started , it mixed with another station. The signal itself was very readable but definitely didn't have the punch and volume obviously compared to your recordings. The station's distance from us is 3450 miles or 5,556 kilometers

Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 11-13
Hello All,
Asian propagation this morning rebounded very
nicely from yesterday's mediocre results, providing TP signals that were pretty
vibrant-- especially in consideration of the elevated solar indexes. As
such, results here were much closer to Steve's positive version.
Both "big gun" and second-tier Asians
sounded very healthy around 1400, and it was a scramble to check them all
during sunrise enhancement. Both 828-JOBB and 972-HLCA had their best signals of
the season, as did 738-HLKG. 585-JOPG was unusually strong, along with 675-VOV
and 756-CNR1. The Chinese lineup on 918, 927, 936 and 945 all were in audio at
some time this morning, along with the Asian regulars on
603, 648, 657 and 666. A mystery co-channel on 639 was briefly
dominant over CNR1 around 1455 (not // 594 or 1134), but co-channels on 972
and 1377 seemed to get lost in the "big gun" audio. Overall conditions
were very favorable, but other than the 639 UnID no new or rare
Asian stations were heard. Sick-sounding transmitters were back with a
vengeance, though-- 738-BEL2's throbbing hum seemed to consume most of its
modulation at times, and 657-Pyongyang's high-frequency audio seems to
be missing. In relation to this, about the only surprising reception this
morning was apparently hearing the infamous Pyongyang tirade-yelling OM and YL
team on a vibrant 648-VOR at 1505 during the Korean program,
with their distinctive rapid-fire shouted Korean. Hopefully this was
just an aberration, and not an indication that this very noxious
programming is really part of a new 648-VOR schedule.
The following were heard on a C.Crane SWP Slider
model (7.5" loopstick) inductively coupled to a 9' sided PVC tuned passive

Re: Is there an #ultralightdx IRC channel?
#ultralightdx

Hi Stephen, it seems as though chatrooms have lost the popularity they held a few years ago. I use to own and moderate a chatroom for a different hobby. Use to have some good crowds (10-15 people) and some good times chatting. But the users slowly lost interest and dwindled away. The room sits empty now, don't think anyone has been there in the last year.

I'm still in contact with some of the friends I made there via AIM, but nobody seems to be interested in a group chat. Now I wouldn't mind joining an Ultralightdx chat as you suggest, but I'd prefer it not be policed as tight as you suggest. Sure, we don't want it taken over by people using $100,000 radio systems and antennas, but I wouldn't want to be "kicked" just because I want to discuss my PL-390 or mention what I heard on my Ebay $75 beat to heck Sony 2010. :) 73, Jerry, KD0GS Longmont, CO
