WOW, Great job, Rob! You're pulling stations out of the ether just
like all you HEAVY-hitters are doing! I'll post some of the stations
I was able to ID last night and this morning under a separate

undertaking what I would think to be quite an arduous task of logging
300 stations in 30 days!! Welcome,Greg,to this group. We're all
pretty laid back here, and I'd bet you'll never regret getting into

Hi Guys....Basically I started ULR loggings on 8/30/08...and as of
tonight am up to 201 stations heard...using a stock Sony SRF-59:

23 states, 2 countries, 3 Canadian provinces.

Only DX an hour or so a day, maybe 3 or 4 days a week. Am also a ham
and have other hobbies.

But, am having a lot of fun, and due to the SRF-59's excellent
nulling capabilities, I'm hearing some stations I've never heard in
40+ years of AM-band DXing.

Greg Shoom <shoomg@...>

Hello all. I'm a new member to this group and I just want to introduce myself.

I've been involved in radio as a hobby on and off since I was twelve, back in 1975. Currently my two main interests are amateur radio and mediumwave DXing. I recently took up ultralight DXing. I bought a Sony SRF-59 last January and promptly logged one new station using it. But I didn't do anything more with it until last month. In early September I logged an outlet of Radio Rebelde in Cuba on 1180 kHz using a Kaito KA-1103. On an impulse, I pulled out my SRF-59 to see if I could hear this Cuban on it too. I was amazed that it was coming in just as well on this little pocket radio as on the 1103. I had also recently been reading about the ultralight awards program in the September issue of the ODXA's Listening In, so I decided to give ultralight DXing a go.

It's now the middle of October and so far I have achieved the following, all on the Sony SRF-59.
Total stations logged: 166.
U.S. states logged: 24.
Countries logged: 3.

Robert Ross and Gary Debock have also issued me the 100 Stations Heard award and the 20 U.S. States Heard award.

I'm now working towards the 200 stations heard award. I recently bought a second ultralight radio, a Sangean DT-400W, but I'm not using it yet. I want to try to get to 200 using only the SRF-59. I'm hoping this group will help with this goal.

Best,
Greg Shoom

300-in-30 Days Challenge, Day 9

John Cereghin <pastor@...>

Not as much time to DX yesterday (had the day off and went to Maryland
for most of Friday), but two new ULs at sunrise:

580 WTAG Worcester MA, 0630, area wx, ads for the "Freemasons of
Massachusetts" open house this weekend

580 WTCW Whitesburg, KY 0650, classic country mx, ID. A surprise!

Both stations are also new ones overall.

France-1377 was being reported last night. I had weak audio on the
FRG-7 but could get it on the UL.

After 9 days, I'm now up to 220 stations, with 24 new stations for the
UL log and 10 new stations overall. I am now at 371 stations for the
UL log overall.

So far, one of the benefits of the Challenge is being able to add
quite a few new stations to your logs through a more concentrated and
targeted listening effort.

While the DT-200VX may not be the top-rated UL unit, it is performing
quite nicely so far, as I am using it for most of the Challenge. It's
seems a bit deaf on the lower band, but it has pulled in 4 really nice
catches over the last two days, including Mississippi on 940, which
was a total surprise!

Re: 300-in-30 Day Challenge, Day 8

Gary DeBock

Hi John,

Congratulations on your success so far, in the 300-in-30 Day Challenge.  You certainly are making a serious effort, and having exciting results.  217 stations in 8 days makes all of us feel inspired.

Unfortunately, here on the west coast, the odds are stacked against anyone trying the 300-in 30 Day Challenge.  Sunset skip is pretty meager.  Sunrise isn't much better.  Someone trying the Challenge would probably end up mentally Challenged.  Trying for new states usually produces a State of failure.  New countries?  About as profitable as Countrywide Mortgage.  We just can't compete in much of anything except the Ultralight distance records, where we dominate (maybe some compensation for everything else?)

back then, no doubt about it. Just the other day I ran across a group
picture of all of us crazy DX'ers from the NU/FT vention in
Reynoldsburgh, OH in the summer of 1987. John, I'm going to scan this
photo and send it up your way. You may not have seen that one in quite
a while. Gee, we were just a little younger back then, hi hi. Take care.

Hey Kirk........I really miss those days too....being a member of both NU
and Fine Tuning for many years......I think it's kinda funny to see all you
Ol' Boys showing up here on the ULR Pages!! (And me too! HAHHHHA). All
those years tuning the Shortwave Bands with Mega Dollar Communications
Receivers and Thousands of feet of wire....and here we all are now twirling
little plastic Radios around in our hands....trying to break the 15,000
kilometer mark for stations heard on an Ultralight!! I remember spending a
few COLD Nights up in Dave Clark's DX Barn in Newmarket, Ontario with Dave
and Cedric Marshall...hey there's a couple of Names that should bring back
memories!! HAHA.....I can't imagine trying to ULR DX up there in those days
though..I think my Fingers would be frozen off twirling the ULR's in the
Sub-Frozen climes of the DX Barn!! Man....we sure did hear a lot of Nice
stuff up there though..........

Unfortunately...I never was able to get to any of the NU/FT Ventions in Reynoldsburg.......sure wish I woulda now. It would be nice to put faces to
all those names!! Harold Sellers always tried to get me to go with him..but
the timing was never right for my Holidays and stuff. Not to mention my
wife worked shifts....and I had a young boy to look after back then. He's
now in his 6th year of Universty....so I guess I would be able to go
now.....but those days are long gone sadly!!

Hey.....I'd like to see that Photo too Kirk..so if you can...please shoot a
copy off to me as well....I'm sure I'll know a lot of those Boys!!

Thanks for the Nostalgia trip Kirk........and ain't it funny how everything
goes full circle???!!
