Re: Submission for New Barefoot UL world record!
Hello Paul,
Congratulations on your outstanding reception of
WYFR-1557 in Kouhu, Taiwan. That certainly is an astonishing reception for
an Ultralight, and the first time I've ever heard of a European DXer logging an
east Asian. You should be extremely happy, and justifiably so.
I feel very reluctant to mention this, but in the
competition for the all-time Ultralight barefoot world distance record, there
have been three TP DXers (John Bryant, Dennis Vroom and myself) that have
received VOA-1575 in Ban Rasom, Thailand, while DXing from Grayland,
Washington with a stock Ultralight radio. Dennis Vroom was the first to do
it in the spring with an SRF-39FP, I was able to do it with both an
SRF-T615 and DT-400W (an mp3 is posted in the Ultralightdx file area), and
John Bryant just did it this week at Grayland with his SRF-T615.
These receptions all occurred at the Grayland Motel, a famous Washington state
DXpedition site, and all were for a reception at a distance of 11,721 km, or
7,283 miles. We just didn't update the record list yet to reflect this,
and I'm very sorry for this oversight.
Once again, congratulations on your
outstanding logging, which in my own humble opinion, is far more impressive than
the routine loggings of VOA-1575 at Grayland. Perhaps the distance
advantages that TP DXers enjoy is some minor compensation for our severe
lack of possible DX countries, as compared to those DXers in Europe,
and the East Coast of North America :>)

300-in-30 Days Challenge: Day 1
John Cereghin <pastor@...>
A very good first day to get my 300 stations in 30 days. I logged 125
stations on the DT-200VX barefoot yesterday, including two new ones for the UL log: WSMS-1200 Graham NC #348 WMPM-1270 Smithfield NC at sign-off #349 WKTE-1090 in King NC made a nigh appearance last night, under WBAL as usual. I heard them for the first time last week but they were in better last night and I was able to get more program details this time. WOAI-1200 in San Antonio was also in, but KOA-Denver was not. Neither was KNX in Los Angeles. :( John Cereghin Smyrna DE

New E100
John <john445@...>
Hello all:
I received a new Eton E100 this afternoon and had a little time to give it a whirl this evening. I started with AM in the early 60's and spent many years as a SWL. I have a ICOM R75, but now in a condo and not doing well concerning a decent antenna. I happened to find out about Ultralight DX which sounds exciting. I am not sure of the protocol here, but here are my first five stations heard. 720 khz - WGN Chicago, IL 10/9/08 1605 UTC Afternoon talk show, many ID's. E100 barefoot (1) 890 khz - WLS Chicago, IL 10/9/08 1610 UTC Afternoon talk show, many ID's E100. barefoot (2) 780 khz - WBBM Chicago, IL 10/9/08 1616 UTC Traffic and weather on the 8's, many ID's. E100 barefoot (3) 740 khz - CFZM Tronoto, ON 10/10/08 0111 UTC Zoomer Radio, mx, "Memphis to Mobile", Best of the Best 740. Eton E100 goes to Granite Pier (Ultralight Delight)
MarkWA1ION
On the evening of 8 OCT 2008, I did an after-work sunset period DX
outing to the Granite Pier site (GC= 42.667 N / 70.621 W) in Rockport, MA. This is generally considered the best MW DXing location in the metro-Boston area. Besides the usual Drake R8A live tuning and SDR-IQ spectrum-capturing (results to be published later), I took along an Eton E100 "ultralight" portable receiver. I was quite surprised at the number of "barefoot" loggings I could manage on this tiny radio since, at home, results have been unspectacular. As in real estate, it's "location, location, location" with DXing too. The following concise list of "barefoot" E100 logs made from 2331 to 0048 UTC (7:31 to 8:48 p.m. EDT) will be augmented by a greater- detail list later on. *** Transatlantic *** 549 Algeria - poor 603 France over Spain - good 612 Morocco - fair peak 684 Spain - occasionally through WRKO slop 747 Netherlands - fair peak past CBGY slop 756 Germany - fair 783 Mauritania - sometimes popping through CFDR slop 855 Spain - occasionally through WEEI-850 & CJBC-860 slop 864 France - fair 873 Spain - poor 882 UK - sometimes through WCBS slop 909 UK - tangling with similar strength WABI-910: audios taking turns, plus screamer het. Tight filter would have helped. 954 Spain - fair peak 1116 Spain - poor 1134 Croatia - fair 1170 UAE - over WWVA after WFPB went off 1206 France - fair 1215 UK - good 1314 Spain - poor 1377 France - fair, WMYF-1380 (north) nulled 1422 Germany over Algeria - fair 1575 UAE - fair *** Pan-Am besides common US, Canada, Cuba, Venezuela *** 555 St. Kitts & Nevis - fair peak 630 Puerto Rico - noted with radio pointed SE to null WPRO to the SW I also tried coupling the car rooftop antenna (2 m by 2 m Micro- SuperLoop) to the E100 with the Radio Shack model 15-1853 passive loop. The coaxial cable from the SuperLoop's eastern lower corner 16:1 transformer was fed to the Radio Shack loop's external input jack and the loop was tuned to the frequency of interest while placed in close proximity to the E100. The other corner of the SuperLoop was connected to a pot adjusted to reduce signals from the west and southwest. This arrangement worked splendidly ! Many more TA stations could be heard this way since the cardioid pattern of the rooftop SuperLoop drastically reduced domestic QRM from NYC etc. that came in at full clout on the "barefoot" E100 since Europe is in the opposite direction of many domestic pests. I thought I would have to insert an RPA-1 amp in the line from the SuperLoop to the Radio Shack loop but, no, that was not necessary as the completely passive set-up coupled plenty of signal to the Eton. Of course the Radio shack loop had minimal self pick-up since it was being used inside the car. Had it been outdoors, I probably would have needed the RPA-1 to make sure the SuperLoop pick-up swamped out anything the Radio Shack loop might be getting itself. Among stations noted with the "unlimited ultralight" set-up of SuperLoop via Radio Shack loop air-coupled to the E100 was Djibouti- 1431 for the longest haul of the night. The pre-sunset period (approx. 2200 UTC / 6 p.m. local) was totally crazy as I was first getting set up. Monster TA's all over the place. Midband (1000-1250) was unbelievable, almost "Newfie- sounding". I should have left work earlier I guess. The live Drake R8A listening uncovered the Nigerian (?) on 917 hetting Spain-918 and pushing audio once in a while. Also noted was 595 which I think is Morocco ex-594. I have a number of SDR-IQ captures to wade through over the next week or two. It will be interesting to compare with what's going on at DXpeditions in PEI Canada and Grayland, WA. The ultralight Eton E100 was just brought along as a sort of lark but it added extra "zing" to the mini-DXpedition that I would not have imagined. Mark Connelly, WA1ION - Billerica, MA, USA

Going to do the 300-in-30 Days Challenge
John Cereghin <pastor@...>
I figure I might as well bite the bullet and try to log 300 stations
in 30 days with my SRF-59s and DT-200VX. The end of the 30 days ties in with the end of the Fall Follies, so why not? I'm currently at 347 UL stations, so hopefully, the more intensive listening will push me over (or at least closer to) the magic 400 station mark. At worst, I'd like to be at 400 stations by the end of the year. I got 38 stations so far this morning, just mainly knocking off all my locals and daytimers. John Cereghin Smyrna DE

Re: Eton E100 IF Filter Modification Service Available
Steve Ratzlaff <steveratz@...>
As the person who will be doing the filter and
external antenna mods on the E100, it may save a lot of emails to me if I state
the costs in advance.
The filter mod is $53 for the filter, $50 for
labor, plus shipping costs back to you.
The external antenna mod for the stock
loopstick is $15 total plus shipping costs back to you.
I can't afford to stock more than a couple of
filters at a time; you may have some wait to get your radio back if I'm out
of filters when I receive your radio and have to order more
filters.

Eton E100 IF Filter Modification Service Available
Hello Guys,
Several requests have been received by DXers eager
to have their Eton E100 Ultralight radios modified with the outstanding
Murata CFJ455K5 IF filter (the same narrow filter used in the Eton E1
portable). The replacement of the stock 455 kHz filter with this premium
ceramic filter (as suggested by Guy Atkins in his superb technical article,
recently published in NRC's DX News) truly makes the tiny E100 a super-selective
receiver for all types of DXing missions, both foreign and domestic.
The original designers of the E100
modifications (John Bryant, Guy Atkins and myself) have all used this
outstanding ceramic filter in actual TP DXing sessions, and have been deeply
impressed by its ability to split off weak TP stations adjacent to strong
domestic QRM.
Steve Ratzlaff, a highly qualified ex-Navy sonar
repair technican with extensive professional electronic experience, has offered
to perform this E100 modification for interested DXers. Steve has already
performed this modification for fellow TP-DXer Dennis Vroom, who was highly
satisfied. Those having interest in this procedure should contact Steve directly
at steveratz@..., to
discuss terms.
Steve is also able to perform the E100
modification of installing an external antenna inductive coupling loop to the
stock loopstick, which would enable DXers to use their existing external
antennas to chase DX with the E100 Ultralight (and compete in the
Ultralight Awards program's "Unlimited Class"). For DXers with
effective external antennas, this would be a quick way to experience the fun and
excitement of Ultralight radio DXing, while maintaining the competitive edge of
their directional EWE's, Conti Loops, K9AY's, etc. Please contact Steve with any
questions about this procedure.
73 and Good DX,
Gary DeBock

Hi,

there's a (seems to be) new site called www.dealextreme.com (DX for short). They sell lots of cheap gadgets from China, including the earphones you are looking for[1]. I have no relation with them, but I bought a few itens from DX. Quality of the products varies widely! Fortunately, the site allows reviews (text, photos and videos) from past buyers so you can read some opinions. I found specially useful their battery case for AA and AAA cells[2].
