The Ultralight Express keeps rolling

Joseph Miller <radiodxer2000@...>

Good morning,

Finding some time to check out the airwaves during sunset skip, I was
rewarded with the following:

WAZX 1550 Smyrna GA 10/3/08 7:30 EDT (2330 UTC) with music and talk in SS. This signal faded in and out and required constant positioning to get past CBE in Windsor, but did get several nice peaks making the SS unmistakable. ID is presumed as I used the NRC AM Log to ID, and their QTH is consistent with the directionality of the received signal. #409 overall and my first new logging on the SRF-59. Very pleased with this one.

I just got a passive Terk loop for mw. It does quite well; my Sangean 400 with the TERK during daytime testing was similar in sensitivity to my Sangean PR-D5. The PR-D5 itself improved modestly; but not enough to make it worthwhile for that set. The 400's selectivity is not sufficient to fend off local pests from weak signals 10 KHz away...if anything, that problem was made a little worse by the TERK. On my 1981 vintage SONY ICF-E10W set (a mono, speakerless set about the same size as the 400, but slimmer), it's excellent selectivity handled the TERK very well...I was able to boost signals 10 KHz away from locals with ease and without amplifying the pest. This on signals that the 400 cannot seperate without the TERK. The E10W also had slightly better sensitivity in concert with the TERK than the PR-D5 barefoot!

The TERK is available online from Radio Shack, and is mdelivered for free to your nearest store. $39.99

Marshall,

Welcome to the group.... we all hope that you'll enjoy this fellowship and find the niche hobby of Ultralight Radio to be the great fun that we do.

You asked a question about Nexxtech clock radio..... You are welcome, even encouraged to DX with any pocket radio that you wish, of course... this is an individual hobby and meant to be unadulterated fun for each of us.  However, as you indicated, if you wish to qualify for Ultralight MW DX Records, Awards or Contests, you do need to be using a radio that has been recognized as an "Ultralight" radio by our Definitions Committee. One of their criteria precludes devices of mulkti-use that also include a radio. (Flash light/ radio, recorder/radio, walking stick/radio, etc.)  I am not sure whether your "clock radio" falls under that criteria or not, since several recognized Ultralights contain a clock function.

The best thing that you could do is submit the Nexxtech receiver to the committee for review.... You'll need to submit manufacturers specs or manual as well as photo, dimensions, etc.... All of that info is likely contained in the Owners Manual (an on-line version?)  You could contact the Committee through Kevin Schanilec at
satya@...

Be sure, too, and review the latest Shootout (Summer 2008) of the top Ultralights and other relevant files at the Ultralight Files area on dxer.ca.

Joe,

Any loggings on a recognized Ultralight count for Awards, etc....  If some loggings are on a Barefoot Ultralight and some on a modified unit, you can either lump them all together for "Unlimited Class" Awards or keep two separate lists.... one for Barefoot and one for Unlimited. But.... if some are on an unmodified SRF-39 and others are on an unmodified SRF-59. for instance, you're certainly allowed to lump them all together in the Barefoot category.

Thanks for asking!

The Ultralight DXing Awards Committee is pleased to announce a new and on-going Awards Program for the Ultralight MW DXing Community.  The Program is unique in several respects; first, it is the only Awards Program that is restricted to MW DXing accomplishments achieved with commonly available, inexpensive, entertainment-grade "Ultralight" pocket radios.  Secondly, the program is totally web-based.  Applications for awards are accepted by e-mail only and award certificates that are suitable for framing are distributed to the recipients as printable digital image files.  Thirdly, these certificates feature digitally re-mastered images of some of the most remarkable radio art from the first decade of broadcast radio.

The comprehensive Ultralight DX Awards Program features awards at various levels for Stations Heard, U.S. States Heard, Canadian Provinces Heard, Latin American Stations Heard, Trans-Atlantic Stations Heard, Trans-Pacific Stations Heard, Countries Heard and Continents Heard.  In each category, when a DXer reaches beyond what is normally considered high achievement, special "Master DXer" certificates are awarded;  for instance, in the Stations Heard category, certificates are available for stations heard at the 100, 200, 300, etc. station levels.  At 500 stations heard on an Ultralight receiver, an extraordinary achievement, a "Master Ultralight DXer Award" is conferred.

A complete description of the Ultralight DX Awards Program is available for download from the Ultralight Files area at http://www.dxer.ca/ or directly from Rob Ross of the Awards Committee at va3sw@...

If you have yet to experience the renewed thrill of DXing with an inexpensive Ultralight receiver, we invite you to share the excitement and satisfaction that comes from success in pocket radio DX.  Emphasizing DXing skill and knowledge over equipment innovation, Ultralight Radio DXing brings special rewards in proportion to the special challenges-- and has restored the original thrill of AM DXing to many radio enthusiasts.  The Ultralight Files area of dxer.ca has an extensive set of information and resources on the many aspects of Ultralight Radios, and enthusiasts' activities.  We hope you will accept the challenge, join in the fun, and share in the rewards!

Hi Marshall:

Welcome to the fun! It sounds like you are similar to many of us - a
longtime DXer in search of a new source of adventure and challenge. I
think you'll find it here! To see what others are listening with,
tinkering with, etc., check out the DXer.ca web site, especially the
Ultra-Light File Area.

I'm on the definitions committee, so I can help see if your NEXXTECH units
are UltraLights. I checked on The Source's Web site, but was unable to
find a radio by NEXXTECH that costs $50.00. Do you have a model number,
Web link, etc.?

Besides CBK and CKRM last evening, I heard CKJH 750 for the first time
at sunrise this morning. I still say it was strange night for DX.

Had a trace of a het on 774 kHz, but their was heavy QRM from nearby
KSPI 780 running at full power during their PSRA period.

Congratulations Rob. That quite an accomplishment. How long until
600? It will be awhile before I reach 500.

Conditions were strange here last evening. At times it was difficult
to hear the usual stations to the northeast. I was listening to the
debates on WWL 870, when it faded under Radio Reloj. I immediately
fired up the SRF-T615 in order to add the station to my log. Oddly,
reception of CBA 540 and CKRM 620 was very good. It almost seems the
best reception was on a northwest-southeast axis. Sadly I couldn't
keep my eyelid open!

Good luck and DX.

SONY SRF-39FP Prison Radio seen on TV Show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Guys:

Tonight on National Geographic Channel there was a program called "LockDown" which focused on Minnesota's Oak Park Maximum Security Prison. During the show they showed some of the Prisoners items that are made from clear Plastic so they can't hind anything inside of them. Included was a Clear Plastic TV, a Clear Plastic Hair Dryer...and they also showed a clear plastic SONY SRF-39FP Ultralight Radio!!

I felt PROUD when they showed the Prison Radio ULR!!! Gary and John...I wonder how we can get our ULR Crusade inside of those Prison Walls.....heck those boys have a lot of time to DX.....and I'm sure they could earn a lot of ULR Awards!!!!

So with # 500 finally in the Logbooks.......the March continues to see just
what can be accomplished over time. I think I'm getting close to the
