Nothing weird - it was just some good old natural, unpredictable signal propagation.
I agree with Russ that it was possibly KGYN from the Oklahoma Panhandle you heard. They'd be broadcasting Country music from a 10 kW non-directional aerial at the time. The station doesn't go to a directional nighttime pattern until 9:15 pm EST in April.
