Overnight DX - March 16th

Couldn't fall asleep, so I decided to do some DX'ing. First tuned to 1020 kHz to see if I could identify the Radio Centro that fellow DX'er Kirk Allen has been hearing, but no joy. Too much adjacent-channel slop from KLAT "La Tremenda" on 1010. So, I then went to 1130 kHz, but it was wall-to-wall KWKH "The Home of the Legends" Shreveport, LA, so I decided to go back down the dial. I stopped on 980 kHz because I heard Gospel music, not the usual "Puro Tejano" from KRTX Richmond-Rosenberg, TX. Turns out it was "The Light" KOKA from Shreveport, LA. I grew up
in the Shreveport-Bossier area, so I remember when KOKA was on 1550 and 980 was occupied by KJOE, but that's another story ... The website for "The Light" KOKA is http://www.koka.am/index.asp and they do offer streaming audio, but I didn't need that to ID them. They announced "The Light 980 AM KOKA" either before or after every Gospel music cut. Works for me! I'm headed back to bed - it's almost 0730 UTC and I have an early meeting ... ugh! 73 and Good DX'ing, Stephen H. Ponder, N5WBI Houston (Clear Lake City) TX |
