Hi Stan,

I have several small radios. I don't have G8 but I have
PL310 and D96L. Personally I am very disappointed in both
of those DSP receivers. They have too much internally
generated noise and strange AGC action (hard to use them
with additional magnetic loop antenna and AGC pumping
makes weak signals reception really bad).

For casual MW listening as well as DXing my G5 and DE1103
work so much better. Although G5 has better ergonomics and
sound quality than 1103, I discovered that G5 I own has
some het on 540 kHz while DE1103 is "clean" (on the other
hand, the 1103 has more noisy LCD backlighting but this can
be turned off).

So currently the DE1103 is my top performer on MW as far
as small (but not "ultralight") radios are concerned.
In "ultralight" category the Sony SFR59 was and still
remains my favorite. :)

It's just my $0.02...

I've given up on SW as most of the interesting players are
no longer on
the air.  Sync is nice but not essential, if one can
tune up/down 1-2
khz to get rid of the interference. How does the G5 stack
up to the G8?
